Whisky Reviews for Dalwhinnie 1996

8 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.28 points

  1. Arquebus scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

More complex, richer and sweeter than the 15, but perhaps difficult to justify paying over £50 for this edition. The standard 15yo at £25 a bottle is exceptional value.

  2. didi1893 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The Dalwhinnie Distillers Editions has surprisingly little fruity elements in terms of taste. Rather, slightly bitter and tart wood aromas dominate. Only the nose reminds of a DE. The nutty touch is very pleasant. A solid DE, where I already tasted better.
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring the typical Oloroso sherry dominates the nose. Fruity berries mingle with subtle oak tones, vanilla and a touch of tangerines are now present. The 43% alcohol is perfectly integrated. It develops a subtle aroma of wet leather and a hint of tobacco. Fresh and malty fruit now dominate the spicy nose.
    • Taste
At first, a minty freshness dominates. Only after a few seconds does the spicy oak become noticeable. Slowly, the sweet fruit comes to light. But only briefly, then dominates the fine tart and subtly spicy oak. A touch of grapefruit and a pinch of pepper come from the wood. A light nut aroma arises.
    • Finish
With a slight pungency and grapefruit aromas, the finish begins. Sweet fruit is covered relatively quickly by spicy and fine bitter wood aromas. A light walnut aroma is becoming more intense and finishes the finish bitter and fine.

  3. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Nice nose, faint finish and taste completely ok and good drinkable.
    • Nose
On the one hand bright sweet fruits and on the other spicy oak, the fruity basic character of Dalwhinnie is still recognizable, peach, vanilla, honey, behind it a bit of dark chocolate and old leather, mint, some coffee, malt, with time, the Olorosoeinfluss becomes clearer
    • Taste
sweet, spicy, oak, very sweet, fruity, peach, then it will be dry on the palate, Oloroso, plum jam, grapes, salt, but also vanilla and malt
    • Finish
still a lot of peach in the back, rather short, then quite one-dimensional, a bit oak

For the sample, I thank Nethar. I read his review when I wrote it, and I see that with the peaches we had a pretty good idea. This is cool whisky, with this style I have no problem. Try it when you have the opportunity.
    • Nose
The smell is in the line of fruit-chocolate-med-little flowers. Nothing surprising, nothing original, but pleasant smell. From fruit, the most mature, juicy peaches are the brightest. (84 b)
    • Taste
Taste is smell in perfect harmony. Unless it is useless to re-write. The body is thinner. Sweetness prevails, the reverberation is spicey, in the end a bit of bitterness. (84 b)

    A great vintage for Dalwhinnie.
    • Nose
Sweet citrus notes, with an unmistakable heather fluttering.
    • Taste
Rich and sherried, delicious grapes and sprinkles of spice.
    • Finish
The spice grown hotter on the finish, wonderfully energetic.

  7. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

N: syrup, spices - pepper, fruity - , cappuccino, chocolate and caramel
T: malty, citrus, bitter, fudge and chocolate - mocha
F: medium drying, very bitter, vanilla and later something briny - coastal
    blind tasting with Kay

Quite subtle. The sherry is not as present as you'd expect based on the colour.
    • Nose
Tangerine, citrus, straw, cherry, plum, vanilla, caramel, almond, honey, mint and antique furniture.
    • Taste
Tangerines, caramel, beeswax, plum, marzipan, straw, citrus, vanilla, cappucino, mint and liquorice.
    • Finish
Tangerine, marzipan, plum, cappucino, vanilla and honey.
