A great old Bruichladdich with a nice "old school flair", tasty and tasty!

    22/22/22/22 (88P)
    • Nose
Dark caramel shines from the Premium Snifter while a multitude of oily "legs" stick to the glass wall ... Slightly salty maritime notes rise, acidic citrus notes and minimal peat are added, as are hints of apricots and mandarins. Caramelized sugar is released from the delicate sherry notes, the nose appears minimally earthy and loamy. Malty and wet grain notes gradually dissolve, chocolate and hazelnuts are added. Caramel and toffee dissolve menthol and mint freshness, the sweetness increases noticeably ...
    • Taste
The laddie flows gently salty over the tongue, caramelized sugar mixes with a few grains of salt and crushed pepper, tart wooden elements blend with minimally smoky peat and wet clay soil. Milk chocolate and hints of caramel follow the second sip, subtle sharpness massages the tongue, plump warmth flooded the palate with a salty sea sensation. Hints of mild espresso and old walnuts followed by sour citrus fruits, in the background there are sweet sherry flavors ...
    • Finish
Walnuts and hazelnuts stick to the palate, tart wooden elements with earthy peat rest on the tongue, the mouthfeel becomes noticeably greasy and oily. Grated dark chocolate melts in espresso, citrus flavors play with voluminous peat and maritime notes. The aftertaste rests in the mouth for an eternity, wonderful!

I thought about rating this 80 or higher, but it is just too faulty to score that high. The nose is pretty good. And I normally don't mind a bit of sulphur, but in this case it ruins a lot of the palate for me.
    • Nose
Salty seaweed and fresh citrus with a subtle influence of the oloroso casks. Nutty with caramal and cherry jam. Plenty of red fruit. Pretty sulphury, but no exactly unpleasant.
    • Taste
Creamy and salty. Some spices, apricots and oranges and old, damp oak as well. Gunpowder or burnt matches. Definitely sulphur. Off-putting this time. The palate is too aggressive and not properly balanced.
    • Finish
A bit wine-y. Rubber in the aftertaste, not many other enjoyable features. Luckily the finish is not too long.

  7. LordBellamy scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Nose: first typical Laddienoten, maritime, salty, citrus and cereals, then comes slowly but surely the sherry with nut, caramel, nougat, hazelnut, looks round, but not very old and complex, in addition to mushy forest soil, black tea, later subtle smoke and burned match / sulfur

Taste: firm textut, sherry sweetness, maritime notes

Finish: medium and dry, subtle sherry, salt, some oak

Conclusion: OK, nice dram, but not anymore. Sherry is not very strong, he looks much younger, blind I would give the 12-15 years - 85 points

    • Taste
Vanilla, caramel, fruit salad, exotic fruits too, sherry.
    • Finish
      Dark, long, sherried.

    • Nose
Sweet aromas of orange and apricot with a touch of white wine
    • Taste
A sweet taste with hints of oranges, apricots, figs, prunes, raisins, hazelnut and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      Only medium to long

A very dark and intensely sweet Whisky with a clear note of sherry. A full and fruity character with a hint of sulfur.

"This Bruichladdich 21yo is a very dark, intensely sweet and sherried

affair, thanks to full-term maturation in Oloroso Sherry butts. Very

big and fruity, with more than a hint of sulphur."

    I really disliked this dram.

Sample obtained during tasting with Jim McEwan during Munich Whisky & Bar Festival 2009.
    • Nose
      Nutty, strong sherry notes
    • Taste
Dominated by bad sherry from wrotten cask(s)
    • Finish
Relatively short, becomes unpleasant and metallic
