Well, initially I thought the nose was the best part followed by the finish and the taste was a bit of a let down to how amazing the nose was. While some of this is true, after a few drams of it I’m really liking all of this. The nose is great, the taste pretty amazing and the finish is spicy sweet. A late autumn dram! WILL BE GETTING ANOTHER BOTTLE TO BUNKER FOR THE FUTURE
    • Nose
      87 87
Sweet cranberries, bright apricots, strawberries, melted brown sugar, dark honey, vanilla, sweet and spicy chilli peppers, sweet fennel, leather, vanilla ice cream with cherry cheese cake.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nice medium mouthfeel, sweet dark fruits, rich caramel and chocolate, a little nutmeg, spicy oak. It’s good but the nose hints at a better palate, the nose is so good.
    • Finish
      89 89
oaky, spicy, nutmeg, a little dry, salty, nice rich caramel, thick rich spicy honey ( fireweed honey) lightly tannic, tart and dry, caramels with tart with sugared cranberries and cinnamon then back to the oaky, spicy and slightly tannic.

    Balblair Tasting Notes

A sparkling golden colour, this single cask is a very unusual style of Balblair. There is a definite smoky character which can be detected on the nose resulting from the time spent maturing in an American oak barrel which had previously held an Islay malt.

On the nose it is sweet, smoky and spicy with elements of toffee, butterscotch oranges, apples and floral notes. There is a full bodied flavour with a long smooth finish; smoky and spicy with sweetness developing from hints of orange, vanilla and toffee.

Nose: Starts rather floral with some flower petals, lavender, a bit of dirty, sort of earthy peaty undertone which makes it even nicer.Leafy, but also sweet, some exotic lychee and citrusy edge too. candied grapefruit peel. lovely

Palate: sweet and creamy, with that earthiness, choclate and truffle with vanilla and nuts, also a bit of peppery zing

Finish : Fruit, sweet, and some distant smoke that lingers.

A totally nice combination of fruity, earthy and smokiness. Great stuff from Balblair, and one of the best (if not THE best) OB I’ve had for a long time. Cracking stuff, with a twist. Get yours while they last, only about 150 bottles are around .

Nose: red apple, apricot jam, blackberry, honey and custard with smoke and heather and spices.

Taste: red apple and vanilla and spices + smoke and slight peat influence.

Finish: drying, long, liquorice and spice.

Balblair Single Cask and Cask Strength. Enough said. Heaven
    • Nose
Buttery Toast with fruit jam. Pineapple Cube sweets, syrupy sweet like Irn Bru or Red Kola drinks. Something like acrylic paint, or a vinyl music record. Some Vanilla cream fudge. Some spice element like Cinnamon and Clove.

    • Taste
The fruit dominating here, but with the Pinapple Cubes turning into something more earthy, more like unripe banana and leaves. Dryer than the nose lets on.
    • Finish
Long, dry and oaky. Strong stewed black tea. Slightly Earthy. Not detecting any smoke or peat at any point. Certainly an earthiness but not any peaty notes.

It`s quite dark for an 2nd fill ex-bourbon cask, so I`m wondering if it`s maybe American oak than previously held sherry before being used by Ardbeg?

Reportedly matured in an ex-Ardbeg cask.

Only available to members of The Gathering Place. Released to mark the launch of the new Balblair members` website:

"We will shortly be releasing Cask 1463, from 1990, that represents a
very rare style of Balblair. Most of our stock is aged in American oak,
ex-bourbon barrels, with a small amount aged in Spanish oak, ex-sherry
casks. However, we have discovered a cask of Balblair from 1990 which is
American oak, but which had previously contained an Islay whisky. The
resulting flavour is unmistakable Balblair but with an unusual twist!"
