It is strong with the Peat. Yet it is not a complete peat bomb. Very smooth and nice. It is just missing some of the oomph that Ardbeg Ten or Port Charlotte 10 have.

    P. S. I am raising it to 85. I know, that it is "just" Tomintoul. But it is pretty close to Ardbeg Ten and Port Charlotte 10 quality and yet it has good price.
    • Nose
      Peat, honey sweetness, salt, acidic
    • Taste
Peat, honey sweetness, pineapple, citrusses, grapefruit, pretty much similar like on the nose.
    • Finish
      Vanilla, bitterness, honey. Dark tea.

A competent single malt with a mainland peated whisky style. Good value.
    • Nose
Smoky, alcoholic sting due to the high abv, sweet vanilla.
    • Taste
Sweet barley quickly taken over by oak spice. Some citrus zest, white peppery note is more apparent, some hot chilies. A bit some sweet minty juiciness at the background. Wood smokiness throughout.
    • Finish
Long lingering wood smoke, pepperiness quite persistent but not harsh. Though lacks complexity but is a lively and peaty alternative to Islay and coastal peated whiskies.

Pretty enjoyable with whisky alcohol well hidden. Sweet, fruity with a balloon that beautifully wraps the whole thing. It's definitely worth a try.

    • Taste
sweet, redcurrant, smoke, a little bitterness, young oak

    RATING: 84pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      85 85
The nose is gentle but intense with notes of extinguished fire and machine oil along with dark bread and iodine.
    • Taste
      83 83
The taste is dry, bitter and somewhat spicy with hints of white pepper, bread crust and gentle peatiness.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is medium lenght and has a beautiful profile of minerality with hints of hay, wet stones and burnt flowers.

Old Ballantruan 10yo 50%. Golden orange. Aroma is a little more rounded than the NAS release and lacking the banana vibe. Oak and some cut apple. Pale biscuits. A fair whack of spiritous roughness. Hmm a little rough. Taste is punchy, oily peat, rock salt, soft smoke, soft mousy oak. The intense oily peat is almost Octomore-like the way it delivers the punch without so much smoke. Punchy. The taste works nicely but the aroma is not quite up to it. Decent enough stuff

  11. thijs100 scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Not your average peater, but I find this Old Ballantruan 10 Years very agreeable.
    • Nose
Rather gentle with soft smoke, smouldering embers and subtle earthy notes, followed by bandaids. Touches of heather and moss. Some puff pastry, caramel, speculaas (spiced biscuits) and green banana skin, but also pickled oranges.
    • Taste
Earthy peat and licorice, as well as charcoal and smoked, sweet barley husks. Touches of menthol cigarettes and baking spices as well. A whisper of iodine even.
    • Finish
Licorice, aniseed and heather. Rather long.

  12. DGV scored this whisky 80 points Expert Junior

    Simple, pleasant, "drinking" whisky.
    • Nose
The aroma and taste - peat, citrus sweetness with a slight sourness, raw dough and a certain perfumery.
    • Finish
Medium duration finish with traces of phenolics and malt bitterness.

A sample of whisky that I try for the first time. It turned out to be very rich - you can't drink much. Just try.
    • Nose

The taste is oily, smoked, like smoked mackerel. Some red apples that were burned in the fire.
    • Taste

    • Finish

Soft, but with character, with the aroma of a stewed bonfire, farm, machine oil and caramel, taste with bitterness, with a little sweetness, with tones of burning, pepper and a slice of brown bread, the finish is open, smoky, long.
A good peaty spider with the right strength, without any extra jewelry. Will go even to lovers of strict islanders.

Nose: peat is definitly present, some caramel freh fruits and dried fruits also spring in the nose

Taste: a very nicely well balanced peaty whiksy, great taste, spicey, dried fruits, caramel and honey and even some well balanced wood tastes, a little bit of maritime saltyness. All present allong side the peat.

A very full body, you can feel the oils are present in the mouth. Delightfull.

    Finish:
For a peaty whisky not to long lasting a bit spicey and peaty.

It seems to me a good deal less smoky than the NAS variant, lemon, banana, pear, apple, in the background a few herbs

It seems to me a lot more fruity than the NAS
    • Taste
Honey, lemon, pepper, some smoke and ashes

Peat and smoke are not overwhelming, The alcohol is very well embedded and there are sweet fruits and an overall delicate balance. One has to pay attention to this one. As for value for money: One of the top ranking whiskies.

  21. Dre73 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Did this one H2H with the NAS version. Surprisingly, the NAS-one was actually better, fuller nose and body, although the taste of the NAS is lighter, but more powerfull. Initially even some watery mouthfeel.
    • Nose
      82 82
Some light peatsmoke, a bit of sweetness, but pretty light nose. Some tobacco, hay, hints of a cow stable.
    • Taste
      84 84
Smooth, gentle, sweet, caramel. Sweet smoke, some honey and tobacco.
    • Finish
      83 83
Now some more pepper, sweet peatsmoke, tobacco.

  22. diamond2000 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

Aroma: braised fire, crust of black bread with cumin, moistened apples, coal dust, later sweetness: honey, apple jam, brown sugar, all accompanied by smoke; oak chips, a very pleasant aroma of freshly ground coffee, in the background oil products and a medical office.
Taste: smoky mineral, some salt, extra dark chocolate, strong espresso, activated charcoal, apple jam, Borodinsky bread crust, a little red pepper.
Finish: longer than average, smoke, a bit of oak, a pleasant coffee bitterness, sweet and sour, mineral-salty, gradually fading.
    Rating: 85
The result: a very good result for a peat release of this particular distillate. The aroma is constantly developing giving out new tones in the process of tasting. The level is absolutely not inferior to the base Ayla peat-legends, although the style here is different, very pleased with the coffee and chocolate note, probably this is a feature of this mold!

Blind tasting during the peat experiment by fassstark.de:
    Askja

also has somehow bowmorenotes, very young, also here again tannins, generally quite ignorant, very flavourless. I like least of all. It tastes like Bowmore but it is not. Who knows?

    At the post-tasting:
The nose is not great, but it is more exciting in the mouth, if quite idiosyncratic and one-dimensional. Certainly different from other smokers and certainly polarizing. Generally very dry, which makes it special. Through the phenolic smoke and in interaction with the other flavors it smells like a disinfectant cocktail with gauze bandage from the hospital.
    • Nose
light phenolic smoke, a sauerkraut note, cucumber water, sweet, vanilla, a hint of citrus
    • Taste
the phenolic smoke is also very light here, but sauerkraut does not exist here. Vanilla and very little citrus. Becomes very dry and dry on the finish
    • Finish
The smoke disappears quickly and mainly tannins with a slight sweetness remain, overall very dry and tart

  24. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A great all-day smoker. Does not need to hide behind Islay, but brings a nice independent characteristic.
    • Nose
Beautiful smoke, sweet, caramel, about light fruit, not snappy, only slightly herbaceous.
    • Taste
In the mouth then clearly wilder. The peat is tart, herbaceous, the sweetness is still present, but in the background.
    • Finish
The finish is entirely on peat, a little menthol, a hint of vanilla, again a little gentler.

  25. Achany scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

sweet fruits, some vanilla, malty and grassy with hints of very gentle peat. that was the nose. The first sip was sweet citrus, malty, some spices and after some seconds the peat kicked in. gentle at first becoming quite all right. some salt as well. Fine peated dram!

Conclusion in the strong peat experiment: For me clearly a 100% Islay whisky! Spontaneously, I would type 48% on the 8th Anniversary Lagavulin.
    • Nose
Blind tasting: Fruity peat rises immediately after pouring from the glass. Citrus fruits mix with the intense peat nose and a subtle smoky note. Already after the first moves I am almost sure that the sample Askja comes to 100% from Islay. Mineral notes, slightly grassy and youthful fresh. Subtle orange and apricot flavors join the voluminous peat notes.
    • Taste
Earthy peat and clay mixes with spicy and tart wood elements and some smoke at the first sip. Fruity sweetness and a hint of vanilla leave the harsh wood tones quickly forgotten. A pinch of black pepper spreads creamy on the tongue and makes the palate glow. Dark caramel and citrus fruit or grapefruit run creamy over the tongue, slowly the warm smoky note intensifies. Herb and wooden with a fine peat-smoke mixture, this blindsample goes into the finish.
    • Finish
Spicy wood notes and pleasant smoke exude a very pleasant and warming aroma. The peat mixes for the last time with the pleasant smoky notes, citrus fruits are added again and end in fruity walnut flavor. For a long time these savory aromas remain warming memories.

  28. malthead-1984 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

nice round malt with fine aromas, great smoke for a highlander
    • Nose
really nice sweet but light smoke, gummy bears, vanilla and some bright fruits like grapes, pears and green apples
    • Taste
creamy, soft, almost oily first, smooth and mild on the tongue followed by a light tingling, with time developing some spiciness and many malt flavors
    • Finish
The finish is nicely smoked after campfire and is then surprisingly fruity, the long-lasting finish developed back out but also some round barrel wort.

  29. Helgo scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Blindtasting in Fassstark.de Forum: "The Peat Experiment" Ham, strong application, smoke, some honey, vanilla and a hint of mint. I'm typing here on a 6-8yo Ledaig and thus 0% Islay

Admittedly, those were not so many blind and outstanding notes.

But even now I feel open again the same pattern: looks young, strong smoke and some wood, honey, vanilla. I can understand that this whisky is being held for an islay whisky (due to the gruff nature).

An honest stinker, but it lacks a bit of complexity.

Not so strong, oily, slightly creamy, lemon, honey, vanilla, cold smoke. Herbe herbs alternate with the sweetness of brown sugar.
    • Finish
      Medium length, tendency to bitterness.

The smell is gentle and caressing, but also exciting due to its variety of aromas. Immediately the need arises to taste. The end ridges, however, are a bit washed out and not clearly distinguishable. In my mouth, I briefly had the thought: smoked grappa must taste like that. The finish is indeed enjoyable but a bit one-sided. blind tasting
    • Nose
soft, clear smoke, vanilla, some orange, barely oak, sauternes, sweetish, a hint of woodruff, smoked peach
    • Taste
Gentle and sweet onset, vanilla, peach, then comes always drooling oak, slightly astringent, the smoke comes late, white grapes
    • Finish

Pleasant & Mature than the Ballantruan without age. With fewer corners & edges and also more interesting with water. Well done!
    • Nose
Heavy, sharp smoke immediately hits the nose. One thinks that the sea is near. A small hand full of green fruits, in the background malted malt. And with water? Not very much different ... One thinks to notice a salty breeze that blows over a gossamer chocolaty scent. A little smoke. Overall, but somehow sticky in the nose.
    • Taste
Malt & smoke. But stop! Not just malt, but malt in sweet sherry. Cold, dense smoke everywhere, with yellow tropical fruit peeking out over time. At the end follows an alcoholic sharpness. Water tickles sour malt notes that combine with sweet pipe smoke. Suddenly, a touch of sherry, accompanied by delicate citrus notes.
    • Finish
A sherry-like sweetness is spreading, with smoke blowing over soft, yellow, ripe, exotic, preserved fruit in white wine. Water returns malt, which stands stable next to a sourish sweetness of yellow fruits. A little bit away is a bowl with a few grams of cocoa powder. Everything is blown by (cigarette?) Smoke.

First Tried:- 2015 - 76pt Nose:- With leather arises slowly with whiff of cocoa and farmy notes.
Spirit harsh still obvious with citrus apple underlay. Soft peat.

Palate:- Ripe sweet fruits with ginger, firm malt, creamy and spicy. Thin coat of iodine.

Finish:- Smooth, medium. With lovely caramel and malty finish. Earthy, warming with some hay.

A nice surprise, as I hadn't heard of this brand. I found it well balanced and smooth.
    • Nose
      Oily, with high viscosity.
Vanilla and heather-infused peat, earthy on mud, moss and tobacco, charcoal, green herbs and orange.
    • Taste
Oily, quite soft and sweet. Again, there is quite some heather-infused peat, sweet malt, charcoal smoke, vanilla custard, citrus and spices towards the end.
    • Finish
Moderately long, with peat, ginger, herbal liqueur, earth, tobacco and... licorice!

I hear that this is expensive for a 10yo whisky. That's a real shame, because this is delicious.

Light and fresh, but delightfully peaty like a bonfire on an autumn afternoon. Faint traces of orange blossom and rose petals through the smoke. Very nice.

    • Finish
Mouth-watering with a rumbling explosion of gentle spices wrapped in sugar crystals. Long and delicious.
