    SMWS Tasting Notes
    Colour: Pale lemon gold

First impressions on the nose are citric aromas; fresh
limes, pink grapefruit, lemon zest and lemon oil then turning more soft and
creamy into lemon meringue pie followed by wood sap and vanilla. The taste neat
is hot and sharp like a very strong tropical fruit punch with a juicy mouth
feel similar to a Starburst candy and a slightly peppery finish. With water,
much more approachable, freshly cut grass, ripe pineapple and like a male
fragrance with lemon as the base note, possibly ‘Dior Homme Sport’. The taste
now light, soft with a slightly savoury, leafy and herbal but also refreshing
note like an iced lime and dandelion tea.

Nose: This is a rather salty coastal sort of nose, with some vanilla and damp wood, in addition to coconut and citrus, but really that felt older than 8 years!

Palate: Palate seems high in abv, but I did not detect that amount of ETOH. I went for 55%, which was more than I felt on the palate, again, salty and also spicy with crushed peppers, some of the oak, and a certain peatiness too. Not a lot of fruit here, but distant hints of maybe some apple and exotics.

Finish: Pepper, a lot of salt, malt and some oak (coconut).

It was a nice dram all in all, but not sure I would like a bottle. A curious dram indeed. Don’t think I had many Balmenachs, so I do not really have a good reference…

    • Nose

    • Finish
      sweet, vanilla and chocolate

It starts almost unpleasant, but gets better with time. It ends on a high note with an excellent finish.
    • Nose
Very soapy at first, almost perfumy. Then vanilla, cumin, mandarin and orange. Water (and time) also reveal grapefruit and banana. The nose is very closed at first, but give it some time and it will reward you.
    • Taste
Very peppery. Coconut, orange and citrus. A bit zesty, some spices and also slightly bitter.
    • Finish
Apple, pepper, cardboard. And then after a long time some caramel.

Notes based on a blind sample. I'm usually not a big fan of this light style of whisky, but I think it's well made and dangerously drinkable. Adding water is not needed and disintegrates the taste. (after the reveal of the sample: wow! 62.7%. Didn't guess that.)
    • Nose
A fresh bourbonny nose. Marzipan. Pear drops and raspberries. Vanilla cake as well. After a while lemon cheesecake.
    • Taste
A light bite. Very oily, almost like olive oil. I like that. A bit grainy and a bit of nutmeg, white pepper and ginger powder.
    • Finish
A nice slightly bitter sweet finish with wood spices. With water a soda-like fizziness in the finish.

    Blind sample in BTC 2014.
A very heavy bourbon influence. This isn't something I'd usually buy,
but I can understand why some people would love this.
    • Nose
Extremely sweet. Banana foam candy, lots of it. Candy cane, vanilla, peach, caramel, pear, lime, malt and limestone. With water also apple and marshmallow.
    • Taste
Banana, vanilla, pepper, orange, raspberry candy, creamy caramel, roasted almond, brown sugar, fig and a little chocolate. Can take some water.
    • Finish
Caramel, pepper, burnt sugar, banana, raspberry and roasted almond.
