A superb Caol Ila as is often the case with the 1981s.
    The 59% are not felt.
    • Nose
      Surprisingly mineral. Chalk, limestone.
We have pineapple peel, apricot, lemon, white pepper.
Light smoke, cold ash, camphor, mercurochrome.
    • Taste
In the mouth, we are in direct line with the nose.
The fruits are the same, in syrup.
The peat takes up a little more space, oily.
The spices are present. Pepper, ginger.
      It's still very well integrated.
    • Finish
Long finish on citrus, lemon, zest.
All mix with candied orange, smoke, cold ash, light peat and a little graphite.

If only these bottles were still available for a fair price...
    • Nose
Surprisingly tropical, with mango and pineapple. Of course, there is peat, but it's mellow, although it smells as if it brings some salty elements on the palate. Let's see in a minute. Along, there is iodine, limestone, and sea shells. Finally, there is malt, and a hint of hay and mint. Excellent so far.
    • Taste
Yep, it is rather salty, but not over the top. Soft peat, iodine, anchovies, and a little bit of grilled bacon. The fruit is rather rounded, with peach, ripe pineapple and sweet lemons. There is honey, vanilla, marzipan to complement this lovely palate.
    • Finish
Long, lingering, with a nice spiciness of pepper, still a good amount of salty, kelpy peat, iodine, marzipan and creamy vanilla.

A complex and pleasant whisky, but quite difficult to access. 89+ / 90 -
    • Nose
Large scale, with sugar, dried fruits; praline notes, a little citrus, chalk and ashes. With aeration, the nose is more and more complex: medicinal notes and a lot of exotic fruits (kumquat, pineapple) and peach
    • Taste
Creamy, elegant, on dried fruits, praline. Sour perfumes (exotic fruits? Cherry?). The whole is very melted, difficult to detect a precise aroma. Peach and apricot in the background, citrus fruits, herbs and bitter cocoa. Always medicinal notes, peaty tip.
    • Finish
Less complex than the nose, on pepper, iodine, wood (bitter), dry earth. Always medicinal notes. The texture is nice and oily

  7. Rom did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Nose on ash, pineapple, the whole is quite fruity, a little greenery too and dry earth. The attack is sweet but the mouth is quickly very powerful. The whole is quite melted and complex with a slight veil of smoke, it is quite difficult to sort. Finale on the smoke, a splash of pepper, green wood and a bit of citrus bitterness. The whole remains quite austere and vegetal despite its age. Very melted. Old School, deserve more time.

A stunner, best Caol Ila I've ever tasted. 90/91.
    • Nose
Mango, apricot, lime, peat, caramel, orange, pineapple, milk chocolate and a little leather. With water some apple. A wonderful nose, incredibly fruity for a peated whisky. Quite Springbank-ish.
    • Taste
Apricot, mango, peat, pepper, chocolate, caramel and leather.
    • Finish
Peat, apricot, milk chocolate, mango, orange and toffee.

Amazing whisky for the price! Buy it if you can still find it, will not disapoint.

  13. peathead scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Nose: (neat) Green apples, some peat/smoke, glue (yuk, but luckily it dissapears fast enough).  (with water) It becomes softer with more gentle peat and smoke (maritime in short), lavender, a little vanilla in the background.
Palate: All of the above, except for the glue and add saltyness to it.  It obviously is a bourbon cask and it definitely needs water.  The balance is just perfect.
Finish: Prickling but in a pleasant way, salt on the lips remain, lingering.

Very nice bottling!  It reminded me at some point of a Caol Ila 1982 Duncan Taylor for The Nectar.  Can`t be bad.

needs time and water to develop a nice crystallized lemony profile. lovely whisky.

  15. Falnor scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Juicy, pepery and lively start for a 31 year old islay. Pineapple, banana and lemon. Marzipan and sweet oaky notes. Just a little sea side and peaty character.
