  1. Spoerkel scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A bottling that stands out pleasantly from the otherwise rather “conformist” Bowmore mass. I would wish that Bowmore would have the courage to leave the almost boring paths to one side or the other in the future.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Full sherry fragrance, dark fruits
    • Taste
      89 89
A surprisingly strong sherry aroma for a Bowmore, subtle peat smoke
    • Finish
      89 89
The sherry stays, the smoke gets stronger again. warming.

  3. LeChiffre scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Unfortunately, it has a soapy, floral off note. A shame, otherwise it would have been a very nice malt.
    • Nose
      86 86
Sweet; dark fruits; Raisins; also fresh fruit notes in between; earthy and mineral notes; Salt; Leather; Tobacco; some flower water; spicy notes from old wood; delicate smoke
    • Taste
      80 80
mild and very soft start; mineral-earthy; spicy old wood that gives the malt enough strength despite the 43%; some pepper; Herbal notes; slightly soapy-floral note (unfortunately a bad note for me); Fruity notes remain discreetly in the background; delicate smoke
    • Finish
      82 82
getting dry easily; some pepper; Fruit notes; some dark chocolate; Wood; delicate smoke

A solid, very typical and classic Bowmore. But nothing more. The 333 € that are called here are grossly overpriced.

  13. Calmar scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The perfect combination of phenols, sherry and oak in the aroma, the taste is already manifested in the dissynchronism, smoke and peat are knocked out of the picture, in the aftertaste the picture is more harmonious, but in itself it loses flavor and taste, perhaps it would not prevent the increase in the fortress at least up to 50%.
    • Nose
A dense, saturated, pronounced sherry effect - dried fruits, raisins, dried apricots, damp earth, light notes of mushrooms and molds, in the background dry processed wood of noble breeds, peaches, varnish-carpentry tones, a little solvent, stain, quite on the periphery of smoky and Smoked motives harmoniously framing the main colors, in general, very deep and varied.
    • Taste
Soft, oily-enveloping, oak in the frame of dried fruits, very dense, rich in shades, spices, candied ginger, smoke, coal, burnt biscuits, peat.
    • Finish
Light, airy, oak bitterness, compote of dried fruits, raisin water, ash, coal.

  15. Archer scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

What a pity that there are no longer any in this form.
    • Nose
Sherry-sweet and mild-smoky at the beginning. Salt and red berries. Makes a very fresh impression, although in the background even heavier notes such as leather and tobacco are to be guessed. Chocolate and toffee.
    • Taste
Mild, soft and very pleasant start with some smoke, sherry and milk chocolate. Wild herbs come, with licorice and some pepper. Over time, with a more vigorous wood note, a certain age of bottling.
    • Finish
Medium long and slightly dry with cool smoke, orange mousse and nougat chocolate.

Floral, soapy, medicinal - not good, reminds me on the 12yo which I rated even worse

  17. ASWhisky scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

a soft, pleasant Bowmore very consistent and conclusive
    • Nose
soft sweet liquorice, flower water, camphor, light smoke pleasant, slightly burnt wood
    • Taste
soft onset, some medicinal soft licorice, lilac, sweet orange, almost no smoke, a hint of violet oil, flowery sweet and pleasant
    • Finish
soft licorice with camphor flowery soft and slightly orange only a little wood getting sweeter tobacco very soft smoke a nice long Bowmore finish

  18. rottendon scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Funnily older than the 15 year old successor. The mouthfeel is a bit too thin for me, but of course only 43%. But it seems more balanced than the new one. Notes from an online chat tasting.
    • Nose
Minerals, still green, red fruits and something medical (not peat) in the beginning. Let it stand for a while. After life: Little smoke, but more beautiful, salty bacon in the nose, still clearly mineral, slightly citrus, some red fruit, not green anymore. overall fresher than expected. It warms up sweeter and heavier, but stays fresh. Will now be a bit floral, nice combination that likes warmth!
    • Taste
Fairly mild onset, balanced, chocolaty minerlisch with some lime juice and the smoke above. Watch out!
    • Finish
On the palate, light acid hangs, on the front of the tongue is dark chocolate, some ash clothes the mouth, not too long the whole thing.

  19. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Delicious, had a reasonable price and I liked better than the subsequent 15-year-old. Since a good NAS bottling was replaced by a weaker with age. ;-)
    • Nose
starts very sour, lemony ... when that has disappeared, the smoke comes, dusky smoke over bacon, leather, tobacco, some nougat
    • Taste
quite strong for 43%, lots of woody spiciness, hints of dark berries (blackberry, elderberry, blackcurrant), clove, pepper, some salt (?), ashes
    • Finish
      long, smoky dark chocolate, pepper

  20. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Like the current Bowmores Darkest a very good yellow whisky!
    • Nose
Nice heavy, some smoke and a full load of sherry, grated lemon peel, greasy, some salt, leather, also chocolate, smoked bacon
    • Taste
Beautiful combination of smoke and sherry, very light violet note, but pleasantly subtle, a hint of sulfur, slightly ashy, caramel
    • Finish
In the finish very fruity, also a little nut, smoke on the palate, pleasant

BOWMORE Darkest, no age statement, 43 vol (from Michael Jackson's "Malt Whisky Companion" 4th edition, 1999)

Whisky in its mid teens, but from superb sherry casks.

Colour: Attractive, refractive, deep amber to tawny.

Nose: Smoky. Floral. Hessian. Sea Air. Fresh, delicious, appetizing, complex.

    Body: Medium to full. Satiny.

Palate: Perfumy start. Flowering currant. Nutty. Dry, black-treacle maltiness.

Finish: Smooth. Polished stone.Hard, salty, licorice.

    Score: 91*

    * the highest rated Bowmore alongside the 40-year-old.

    ___________

Bowmore Darkest (43%, OB, circa 2002)
Colour: cognac. Nose: very perfumy. Lots of sherry influence. A little vulgar and dull, with notes of grape juice and dried orange. Mouth: bold sherryish notes. Sweetish, the peat being quite masked. A little salty, and very, very dull. Quite a ‘catastrophy’, if you ask me. 65 points (Davin 70, Olivier 60)http://www.whiskyfun.com/ArchiveJune04.html#160604

  29. The Macallan scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A great afterdinner dram with a beautyful mix of oloroso sherry and peat
    • Nose
Briny, liqeurcake, lots of sweet sherry liqeur-like notes, pastry-like-mix (reduced: soft, Japanese nut-mix, old overipe citrus fruit, still slightly briny, very light sherry influences)
    • Taste
Soft, creamy, peaty with a very light bonfire aftertaste, sweet, fruit and dry (reduced: very soft and slightly salty, some peat but above all some sweetness emerging from the deep!!)
    • Finish
Very beautyful, light firm, dry and above all peppery/fiery.

Love this edition, dark, smokey, sherry, scotch, scotch, scotch. Whats not to love. Not sure exactly if this edition is discontinued, however there are still some out there some where. Here in the states I felt fortunate to find it and swooped it up.

    • Nose
Some smoke yes, but mainly bananas and some floral notes.
    • Taste
Slightly medicinal attack - unusual for Bowmore. Rather spicy and quite toffee-ish, but still with some smoke - more than in the nose in fact. Seems quite salty and a little bitter (though I didn't think it got its colour from E150a so must be natural)
    • Finish
Quite long and smoky with a little sharpness. Then a return of the bitterness

  35. Feusi scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Gentle introduction to the islands, only pleasant fragrance in the nose, with peat and fruity notes on the palate.  The fruity sweetness is changing to the peaty aromas. You love him or not. Full-bodied with a complex slightly bitter finish.
