A decent nose, rather irrelevant on the palate, quite tannin-heavy finish. Still acceptable for the issue price under 50 euros, nowadays not worth the money demanded.

Pear, some hay, tobacco, pineapple, salt
    • Taste

      Soft, light fruits, slightly bitter

Rather short finish, stimulating salivation, wood, pepper, bitterness, a bit spicy

    • Nose
Sugar sweet and a fruity jam. Freshness of a light sea breeze. Grain and hay.
    • Taste
Light smoky peat in a medium body and very chewy straight away. Brown Sugar sweet and malty - yeasty. Light pepper and some oak.
    • Finish
Medium finish, dry oak, chewy and barley.

Very interesting in the nose. A bit less taste than expected but a very good dram for the price.

    Effervescent

The second miniature of my Tasting Pack is the Bruichladdich Rocks, the 2008 version.

The nose of the Rocks is fairly sweet without really being sweet. You follow? I get some apricots and vanilla and leather, albeit less than on the Waves. No farmy notes here, but something that reminds me of aspirin. Or an effervescent tablet. Weird, but it works. After a few moments, some stable scents do appear and it suddenly turns quite creamy. Nice.

Darn! The first thing that hits the tastebuds is a big floral note, almost perfume! Even worse than on the Waves. Luckily there is enough fruit and spices to mask this. The fruit is bigger than the nose let on. Think apples, apricots, raspberries and a bit of grapefruit. Midpalate it turns oaky bitter.

The finish is short to medium long, just like the Waves, but with more liquorice at the death. It leaves your mouth dry.

Nice nose, but on the palate, the floral element is just too big. I do not expect this from Bruichladdich.

    Bruichladdich (Islay, Scotland)
    Bottling: Rocks
46% alc., Matured in bourbon barrels, matured in Grenache wine barrels.

Nose: Grapes, raspberries and apples (Pink Lady), toasted malt gives rise to associations with fruity black beers. The bourbon barrels leave a trace of vanilla. ...

Taste: oak - there is the wine barrel. Red fruits, wild berries and spices, maybe cloves? The malt is clearly noticeable.

Finish: Still warm in the stomach, medium to long.

Conclusion: Great "Vintage", created by Jim McEwan. Wine finishes can quickly go wrong. I will introduce some of the distillery Arran even closer. This "Laddie" definitely plays in the first league!

Nothing for me. Thin bodied, alcoholic, feisty, bitter due to its obvious youth...

I´m not a Bruichladdich fan in general but this one is the worst I had so far.

    • Nose
Memories of a italian grappa, very fruity, character of a white wine, almost rape grapes
    • Taste
Fruity again, grapes, hints of citrus, not really complex
    • Finish
Medium, maybe with a metallic note

  13. Zazaz scored this whisky 64 points Member Senior

Very unusual whisky. Very dry, reminds me of some italian dry white wine.

  14. granella2003 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The nose is medicinal, pungent with hints of marshmallow, slightly fruity. On the palate it is quite a tasty, marine, hints of dried fruit and caramel followed by smoky aromas of great complexity and balance. Still be found in the final dried fruit, almond, nuts, and smoke

  15. granella2003 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Bruichladdich never ceases to amaze me. This is another masterpiece from the most unconentionale Isly distillery. Sweet and salty, soft and hard, a real storm of flavors. Congratulations Bruich.

    Another Bruichladdich masterpiece
    • Nose
      Very sweet, sherry and malt
    • Taste
Lots of malt and sherry, red fruits, a hint of smoke and a bit of salty
    • Finish
Sherry, nuts, sherry again for a lonf aftertaste

Add a drop of water or two. Do not drink it straight away, this laddie needs ten minutes or so to tame its impulsive temper first. But then you'll be awarded for your patience with much subtler aroma despite of the initial sharp notes of the nose, and prized then with enjoyable vivid taste.

I would define the Rocks style as vigorous and entertaining, and well worthy for all practical purposes. Slàinte!
    • Nose
Soft smokiness, plus yeastiness, some spice and pungency initially. Coastal sea notes, water meadow, wild flowers, oranges, vinegary, marinated apples, watercolours, wet wool, household laundry soap.
    • Taste
Brine, sea salt, smoked fish, pepper, vinegar again, lemon rind, grapefruit. Almost anaesthetic numbness may strike you at first, it vanishes few minutes later though, especially when some water's added. A decent match for a summer's day barbecue perhaps.
    • Finish
Quite long. Beefy, warm, salty and slightly prickled arrival - which is okay for a young malt. Coats the mouth in cherry-, citrussy-, nutty- and chicory bitterness in the end.

  20. drkrylov scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A well-done balance of sweet effervescent tanginess and saltiness, infused with a light amount of pleasant and mild smoke.
    • Nose
Exciting and pungent medicinal brininess and candy â€
    • Taste
Lively rush of deep sweet tangy, gluey, salty, then nuts and fruit, maybe a little caramel, followed by a good deal of mild almond smokiness. Very complex and balanced..
    • Finish
Warm medium tangy finish with a good-quality glue, and maybe cookies & vanilla, followed by a lasting aftertaste of pleasant almond smokiness.

I do like the islay malts and this one does not disapoint
    • Nose
As with most islay malts there is that hint of peat and smoke but the fruits dominate
    • Taste
As i say the fruit dominates with apple and pears
    • Finish
      nice and smooth
