Not complex or extraordinary - but solid, well-blended and enjoyable.

Oh my goodness you'll have to excuse the high score. This whisky is near and dear to me. I've had hundreds of whiskies to include nearly all (and often multiple) the scotch distilleries as singles. This is perhaps my favorite of all whiskies. It is, in my opinion, the best expression of a mainland scotch. It is utterly complex. It doesn't lose complexity at the low 40%. Rather it gains a high degree of quaffability at that strength (if I can make up a word). And quaffability is a good thing. I could quaff this until I don't remember my name. A friend once asked me what my desert island whisky would be and I told him Cragganmore 12yo. I don't doubt it has to do with the weird stills too. Someday I wish to visit those weird stills in person. Older Cragganmore you risk getting too woody. If you have more cask influence you will lose the still nuance. It's just right. 40%. Don't mess with it.
    • Nose
Coffee. Any scotch that has coffee notes I just adore. There's chocolate too so this is like a mocha. Very good strength. Srong but ever so subtle. Vanilla. Some fruit too but it's fleeting. Is it apple or melon? There's a delicate grass smell too - like being outside on a summer day when people are mowing their lawns. Coconut too. And no kidding - blueberry. Like that BooBerry cereal.
    • Taste
Just fine as ever. It has those coffee flavored candies - Nips? I used to eat them by the truckload. There is almost no sense of alcohol. There is a sweetness - super pure crystalline barley sugar honey. This is what I imagine manna from God must have tasted like.
    • Finish
Finishes with a deep resinous honey flavor. Still sweet. There's coffee but it goes almost soil-like, grass-like - like a primevil whisper from old Scotland. It's quite long and more honeyed as it goes. It's just one of those things about Cragganmore, the flavors peak in and out, a fruit here, a spice there. You try to put your finger on it but it's gone and something else has shown up. It's just so darn good.

  5. Alex did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

"Nestling on the banks of the legendary salmon river, Cragganmore is, for many, the home of the definitive Speyside malt. Gold in appearance. The nose offers a complex of sweet floral fragrances, riverside herbs and flowers with some honey and vanilla. `The most complex nose of any malt whisky` (Jackson). Firm, rounded, light to medium bodied. A strong malty taste with hints of sweet wood smoke and sandalwood. A long malt-driven finish with light smoke and hints of sweetness." -
