    scbp-5441, no fun
    • Nose
      85 85
Salt water, maltose, old books, a little ashtray, dust. A little grapefruit peel. A touch of pine resin, vanilla, a touch of coconut, caramel. 85
    • Taste
      85 85
The flavor is missing, but it is indeed a savory and sweet liquor with some peat in it. Caramel, vanilla, maltose, salted fish, very salty, mint, bitter wood. The touch is restrained, slightly irritating, the oil is medium to high, and the comfort is excellent. p83b86
    • Finish
      83 83
Slightly astringent, sticky tannins, soft and waxy aftertaste, a lot of salt, and strong bitterness. 83

Good, drinkable, but not very complex
    • Nose
      88 88
Malty, citric, little vanilla, dry hay, little honey, hints of nuts, some green fruits, little leafy
    • Taste
      89 89
Little punchy, oily, creamy, good sweetness, little fruity, honey, little vanilla, spices, pepper, more dry hay, little ginger - not bad
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long, more punchy, spicy, vanilla, pepper

[December, 2020] After I tested dozens of cask samples (almost all of them "underaged") during the last weeks I desperately look out for some older stuff before Christmas. That is why I assembled an advent calendar of randomly picked bottles out of my sample library...

...and this is a fine dram from long-gone times but it matured a little too long so the tannins are very powerful (a borderline case according to my taste buds). If it had been bottled five to eight years earlier it would have been a perfect dram, but do not get me wrong: Still this is excellent stuff to quaff!
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is jonquiripe corn and the nose offers a surprisingly fresh profile for a 43-years old dram with fruits, honeys, nuts, toffee, floral impressions and delicious spices. After some breathing more waxy-earthy notes appear (forest impressions) and hints of old leather, but no smokiness or peat whatsoever. This is delicate, no doubt but I had a lot of better noses of 40+years old drams from the sixties.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is very complex (as it should be for such an old dram) with a clear spike towards a dominating bitter wooden impact (again, what could be expected after 43-years of maturation). Unfortunately, this drives the dram somewhat out of balance and blocks the reception of the more subtle flavour components. The spices grow stronger too with impressions of vanilla, mint, curry and nutmegs but the fruits and honeys play a walk-on role only, too sad.
    • Finish
      87 87
The mouthfeel is warming and coating with some bitter-drying moments from heavy tannins. Same on the finish - the tannins clearly demand their toll and turn the finish rather bitter-drying but it all stays bearable (wood-heads might even enjoy this tannic power, I guess). Water is not needed as it just flattens the dram without adding new impressions.

Fragrance : sea, iodine, salt, old tree, lollipops, fruit and berry theme (citrus, strawberry, apples, pears), flowers, lemon zest, jam cake with jam. The taste is bright, juicy with bitterness: minerality (iodine, salt), herbs and fruits, a little sweets (sweets, pastries), wood. The aftertaste is even, soft: malt, wood, sherry notes, a little iodine and salt. Conclusion . Excellent whisky. Alive and cheerful, regardless of age. In my opinion, the case when the charms of the refined sherry barrel and long aging coincided. Rating 91 (n23t23f22b23).

Good whisky, always lacks a little intensity.
    • Nose
Rather fresh, fruit from the orchard, peach, apple, apricots, candied ginger, a little almond paste. A little spice. All this is melted, it smells old. It's thin.
    • Taste
Rather fat, a little woody, spicy, a little bitterness.
    • Finish
      Average on spices.

    "Bunnahabhain 43 yo 1968
(47%, The Whisky Agency ‘Sea Life’ 2012, refill sherry butt, 498 btl.)

Nose: fruity and honeyed. The fruits are more indigenous than tropical: pears, plums, figs, apricots. Indeed “sherry fruits”, including a vegetal, slightly dirty aroma which takes away some of the magic. Light resinous notes, floral notes and leafy notes. A little leather in the distance. Very elegant, a slightly drier, sherried version rather than the tropical goodness of the bourbon casks. Mouth: fresh and minty with hints of tobacco and resin. Yellow plums at first, then oranges (both sweet and bigarade varieties). Dashes of pine tree honey and hints of soft pepper. After a while the oak grows stronger, grassy but it’s never too dry. Finish: medium long, a little more herbal and dry, with some green tea notes.

A great nose, and a vivid palate, although I think I’ve had better Bunnahabhain 1968 even from the same bottler. We’ve been spoiled. Around € 225.

    Score: 89/100"

Malt subtle, even discreet, fine and elegant, never aggressive. I also looking for a re-re-refill sherry but f u t ch ê am not rican.
    • Nose
Mushroom, vanilla, almond, wood glue (l é ger), apple.
    • Taste
      Hops, mushrooms, sultanas (raisins), apple.
    • Finish
Medium to long, on the apple and the mushroom.

Is this really 43 years old, it is still fresh and lively with it,

    Excellent cask selection by TWA.
    • Nose
Wow, that's a fruity nose, pineapple, lemon, melon, honey.

Vanilla Ice cream notes and hints of orange after a few minutes.

I love this, will the palate match?
    • Taste
Creamy but not as fruity as I was expecting.

There is some vanilla, banana, melon and then a blast of fizzy lemon.

There is also some nougat in there.
    • Finish
Medium length with the sweetness returning.

  11. Jeep51 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Easy to drink but lacking punch, a delicate and discreet malt despite the time spent in it. A re-re-refill sherry?
    • Nose
Immediate but quite restrained (discreet limit). Mix of very (too?) Ripe fruits and cereals. A bit of Swiss apples also but it is rather carried by very ripe pineapple, vanilla, muesli and cereal biscuits. Distinct citrus notes appear as you tasted.
    • Taste
Relatively slender on a mix of slightly exotic fruits, vanilla, liquorice and a very light sea breeze. Lack of punch.
    • Finish
Medium length, slightly salty and fruity.

Nose on an exotic fruit-based mix where mango, passion fruit and clementine supernatant, very complex. Fruity mouth with a nice scale. Long finish on the exotic fruitiness. Very very good.

A good old Islay-Nordkuestenmalt who, despite his advanced age, still does not count to the old iron, but brings a lot of strength and flavor.
    • Nose
Cough syrup of the very delicious variety. Liquorice, a very pleasant portion of wood and an interesting spicy-caramel mixture. Later also with floral aromas. Amazingly strong in the nose.
    • Taste
As expected, supple and velvety lying on the tongue, yet with sufficient strength to bring out the stronger rooting notes that are present here. Maritime influences can not be denied, especially tasty coarse sea salt. The wood comes through, but less than you would expect given the age.
    • Finish
Good and solid in length, again spicy-salty and alike with a liqueur-like finish.
