    HWF VBT sample 2.
Less caramel and malty notes than the 1994 vintage and therefore a little more fruity. Can't say either one is better.
Beware that it does need some time to open up.
    • Nose
Vanilla, caramel, citrus, apple, dried apricot and a light spiciness. Also cappucinino and a slight nuttiness. After a while also honey, orange and pear, as well as subtle malty notes like straw and cookies. With water also a little leather and plum.
    • Taste
vanilla, apple, spicy oak, malt, a little mint and liquorice and a slight floral touch. Also here after a few minutes some apricot and honey.
    • Finish
Caramel, vanilla, apple, almond, spicy oak and a whiff of smoke.

    Blind sample.

Pretty hot. Ethanol, citrus tang, barley sugar, lime cake, peach seltzer, fresh, some lychee on the finish. Solid malt, if not a little hot and spirity. 1995 is the last year Glen Garioch was peated, I believe. Although I don’t get any here.

I have reviewed this whisky as part of a full Glen Garioch Vintage series at, with the 1994 and 1991, all bourbon matured, and very different....:

    Colour: Gold
Nose: Very light, malty, fresh, with a thin thread of peat
smoke, on freshly crushed barley and some pear drops. Diluted, it becomes more
    on freshly crushed barley.
Taste: Fresh, light, malty, slightly waxy and
spicy, with some vanilla, ginger, some tangerine and light floral notes, on top
of a nice light peat smoke. The finish is medium to long, slightly smoky and
peaty, with some fruits of the orchards and almonds, as well as some light
    fragrant floral notes.
Impression: I do not know if the type of casks used
for this batch is the same as the previous vintages, but the flavour profile is
rather different, being lighter and, to my opinion, of better quality, more
subtle and less waxy. Very enjoyable and fairly price. If you wish to taste a
Glen Garioch, this might be a very nice introduction.

Great malt. With was a little better.
    • Nose
Very clear vanilla, slightly hiding a touch of glue. Then everything disappears and new things come out. Now he gets malty and the alcohol hits the nose.
    • Taste
Voluminous, then sweet, towards honey and here too the vanilla. Then he is gone again. Let's see what else is possible with water. He is much sweeter, as in the nose in the direction of honey. Then a bit bitter, and some vanilla. But also very straightforward with water and not very complex.
    • Finish
Relatively long with a mixture of sweet and bitter.

    Tasting Notes by Glen Garioch;

Warm and spicy on the palate, with tastes of pancakes filled with layers of baked banana and toffee sauce, mocha chocolate and warm golden syrup.Marking a milestone in Glen Garioch’s recent history, our Vintage 1995 was the last to smoke its barley with peat, before being left to mature in the finest first fill bourbon barrels.

I tasted this blind and compared it to an Imperial, but many people were thinking of Littlemill. That might give you some indication as to what this should taste like. This is a limited release of 6.000 bottles, so there won't be many of them left. But if you do stumble upon one, don't hesitate. It should cost around 70 euros, which is really good value for money.
    • Nose
Give this whisky time to open up, you'll be rewarded. Because at first it's way too sharp. There's a lovely malt aroma surrounded by tropical fruit, a lot of orange and a bit of chocolate. It also has a soapy quality, which strangely enough is actually pleasant.
    • Taste
Very syrupy, almost waxy. A warm mouthfeel and plenty of spices like mint and aniseed. The bourbon casks have been very active. A sweet taste to go with the orange that was already very prominent in the nose.
    • Finish
Bitter and dry, with mandarin. And if you wait long enough, a very faint cherry note starts to develop.

  16. Banzai scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Little complex whisky where the taste is somewhat disappointing.
    • Nose
Lightly stimulating, fresh nose. I have citrus (white grapefruit and lime zest), some melon, butter and vanilla. Pretty pleasant.
    • Taste
On the taste I have citrus back and in the distance some granular tones, then some sweet with vanilla and lychees. Slightly drying.
    • Finish
Pretty short finish with a sweet touch and some wood tones

HWF VBT-5 sample 2 tasted with Aby and J J
    • Nose
exotic fruits - melon and guava, red apples, creamy, fudge and butter
    • Taste
very full, spices - pepper, chocolate, fudge, cane sugar, pastry - puff paste, cranberries and plums
    • Finish
vanilla, white chocolate and again pepper

    Thumbs up
    • Nose
Latte Machiatto, Toffee, little bit spicy
    • Taste
Toffee Bonbon, Chocolate with Caramel ... like MARS
    • Finish
      long vanilla

  19. markjedi1 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Nice dram, albeit nothing special. Around 60 EUR.
    • Nose
The nose starts off honeysweet and minerally. Flints, citrus and some
camphor. Quite creamy on beeswax. Hints of nuts and nougat.
Coconut and sweet barley. Something sourish like yoghurt. Nice.
    • Taste
It is oily and spicy. Very spicy, in fact. All sorts of pepper and a
handful of ginger. Very sweet on yellow and white
fruit. But coconut jumps out. I am reminded of Bounty. Perfectly quaffable without water.
    • Finish
The finish is smoky, but short.
