Tasted directly following the 2015 Hype-Rye Crown Royal Northern Harvest. There are worlds in between! Strong, round and much better in balance, this one shows up here. Just right for the cold season.
    • Nose
Strong, lots of caramel, herbs and some aldehydes. A buttery cake note comes along with some roasted aromas. Very soft, acidic tones are to be identified. The alcohol does not disturb the nose. The roasted and sour aromas heat up, the nose becomes rounder and fuller.
    • Taste
The usual herbal candy notes with emphasis on a malty honey sweetness, very powerful, very well integrated alcohol. Towards the end, the oak is also felt. Fairly oily in the mouth, well balanced.
    • Finish
The finish is not overly long and without special emphasis. The alcohol warms far into the finish.

    E H Taylor Straight Rye 50%.

Last pour of the bottle at The Grey Horse, Kingston, Oct 2021. Short review in between my son's sleep and feeding windows.

Aroma is spicy, toasted rye bread, that toffee apple highlighter pen vibe that permeates the whiskies from casks that Buffalo Trace chooses for its E H Taylor brand.

Taste is spicy and boozy, simple woodiness, slight toffee and peanut brittle, boozy linger.

Quite expensive (£125 retail in UK) considering the superior quality of many cheaper alternatives. A perfectly good whiskey though. I’d consider paying 1/3 of the asking price for the end product. I almost always prefer a US distillery's rye to their bourbon but that is definitely not the case in respect of Buffalo Trace's EH Taylor brand, the bourbon being so luscious but the rye being a bit empty, spicy. There are a lot better rye whiskies at around half the price. 3.475/83

Dream Rye, super balanced and from a still surprisingly fresh nose, he goes into it's beautiful Christmas over in the mouth. Great.
    • Nose
Vanilla raisin rum ice cream, freshly painted wooden floor, nice buttery rye, almonds, light honey, fresh red apple in between, butter biscuits, slightly sourish like lemon oil, fig
    • Taste
Mhh, beautiful, figs, dates, raisins, again the Malaga ice cream, mascarpone, tiramisu, balsamic, almonds, rye of course, sweet hazelnut and peanuts, honey, fennel, oregano, lavender, cocoa powder, roasted oak chips, burnt toast, cinnamon and nutmeg
    • Finish
Rye, cinnamon, nutmeg, lavender, cocoa, oak chips, cereals, long, warming, round

    Wonderful sherry colors.
In the smell sweet, after caramel and figs.
Sweetish in the taste with butter toffee and a light, sweet wood note. With a little bit of water, the whiskey looks rounder and milder. Long, pleasant finish with a peppery note and sweet wood. A very good drop .....

    Tasted blind
    • Nose
Sticky wood. One of those ice-cream based alcohol desserts. Caramel. Vanilla pudding. Gentle woodspice (maybe some hints of rye spice?). Butterscotch. Freshly cut planks. Roasted nuts. There's a faint fruity note in the background that I can't put my finger on.
    • Taste
Loads of wood, bitter and sweet. Creamy, sweet vanilla. Bit of a porridge note. Cinnamon and pepper on the swallow.
    • Finish
Medium-Long. Bitter wood. Anise. Creme Soda. Fruit (nectarines?)

A very spicy, oily and powerful rye with a long and spicy, almost peppery finish. I liked it very much.

  10. granella2003 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Oily rye spices and all kinds of woody notes. Hints of dried peels, orange zest
      and linseed.
    • Taste
Thick with cooked fruit and caramel. Potpourri,
rye, hints of butterscotch and prune.
    • Finish
      Long, sweet finish. Very spiced.
