    • Nose
Sweet peat. A micro dose of sulfur. Vanilla and herbs. Malt emerges and asserts itself with peppery notes.
The sweetness settles down, with some notes of chocolate powder.
    • Taste
      Sweetness? Actually no !
Beautiful peppery attack, frank. Soot in hyphen.
    • Finish
Sulfur (which is not unpleasant). Very consistent with the mouth, even if it is a little redundant. Very long, but a little unbalanced on the side of spices and bitterness, initially. The opening is good and restores the balance with honeyed notes.

      Enthusiasm
      Nose 4/5
      Mouth and finish 3/5

      Whisky n ° 1816

  2. Dris scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Dry and unfamiliar style of springbank. I get farmyard and dusty book notes. A metallic note is lurking in the background, definitely less rich and mature than the recent 12yo-s. Needs quite some time to open up. Tasted H2H with batch 15 & 16.

Pleasant Springbank, although I prefer the new, dirty batches.
    • Nose
Peat, herbals, pepper, cocoa, green apple, sulfur, camphor and mint.
    • Taste
Peat, salted minerals, pepper, nutmeg, honey, mandarin and metal coins.
    • Finish
      Medium length, fruity, spicy.

  4. nhuber scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

great nose, opens up nicely with a bit of water, lovely sherry notes, rather long finish... nice one :) 88/89p

  5. penumbra scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The sherry barrel style is extremely weak, the overall is not pleasant, and the characteristics of the distillery are more prominent
    • Nose
Slight sulphur, duck egg fat, meat, cold white, chalky earth, grape syrup, slightly sweet peat, barley, cocoa powder.
    • Taste
Slightly spicy, maltose, warm peat, honey, grape skins, brine, ginkgo, oak, almonds.
Good, full of fat, slightly sweet, no acid, no tannin, no astringency, bitter, slightly spicy, no alcohol.
    • Finish
Long, dark, charcoal, pepper, matcha bitter, salt.

Batch 5 from 2012 shows quite a coastal smokey ozone barley rich profile on the nose. Quite ashy, some rhubarb, apricots, cooking apple skins, then bourbon notes with almonds (skins on) a little Angelica and some herbiness. It’s on the ethereal lighter side.

  8. cfosterk scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Coastal, smokey ozone, barley rich, ashy, rhubard and apricots, cooking apple skins, almonds (skins on) then savoury and herbal notes and a little angelica. Returning a little later theres marzipan on the nose.

The palate is immediately sweet and smokey with loads of peat. Ashy again, and more fruit. Quite oily and fat - nice viscousity, a little salt

NOSE: Initially; barley, sherry, bourbon, hints of peat. With more air; minerality, engine oil, barley juice, dried red berries, dried yellow fruits, hints of coconut and vanilla, oily. With even more time; barn yard funk. (89-91p)
TASTE: Rich, strong, fruity, lots of dried fruits. Takes water well; becomes more mineral. (89-90p)
    FINISH:
OVERALL: A successful sherry & bourbon cask marriage. Total score 89-90 points.

This is a deep and complex Springbank. Had to get used to it's sulphury side, though.
    • Nose
Leather(typical of Springbank to me),chocolate and caramel, sherry, rhubarb, green apple, sea air. Also some eggs(sulphur) and hardly any peat smoke.
    • Taste
Round and oily. More peat now, combined with leather, suplphur and sea salt. This dirty edge is balanced by distinct fruitiness(raisins, citrus fruits, apple), honey and milk chocolate. Also a bit metallic.
    • Finish
Lighter and a bit tannic/drying. Rhubarb, mandarin, fresh spices, a bit waxy and a bit of sulphury smoke
      .

Wonderful. Incredibly complex. Fresh, yet mature—the casks used to age this whisky were clearly of high quality (which is such an important part of making a great whisky). This dram has a little bit of everything—here you can find elements of every style/region of Scottish single malts, so long as you take your time enjoying it.

The only real criticism I can find is that the finish is not as long as I would like, and the parts that do stick around are not the best parts of the palate. But it’s not like the finish is bad or short—it’s just not as great as the nose and palate. It can also be a bit tricky to add the right amount of water. In my opinion this does require at least a little water to fully enjoy—even a little more water than I would normally add to most cask strength malts. But if you go overboard with the water, you can easily drown the wonderful assortment of flavors, so it’s best to add only a drop at a time.

If the Springbank 10 year old is a wonderful introduction to single malt whisky for a newcomer (as I believe it is), this is truly a next level malt for whisky veterans. It takes a little more effort than some more straightforward single malts, but it’s time well spent. If you are lucky enough to have a bottle of this one, take your time and savor it.

Buy again? Absolutely, whenever I can find it.

    Score: 92/100

    • Nose
Wow, this has a big, fresh sherry nose. Nuts. Dried fruits. Oak. Apricot. Earthy, vegetal peat smoke. Citrus. Fresh ginger. Asparagus. Spicy chocolate. So much complexity. So many flavors. It has the nose of a much older whisky. It’s also quite powerful (due to the ABV) and really needs a few drops of water to open up.
    • Taste
Chocolate. Nuts—macadamia in particular, but walnuts too. Dried fruit. Raisins. Malted milk balls. Coconut. Banana. Peat smoke. Cinnamon. Baking spices. Rose. Turkish delight. Crystallized ginger. Anise. Yeah, there’s a lot going on here. Much like the nose, the palate has tons of complexity. I find new notes with every sip. Like the nose, water is needed to really bring out all of the depth and complexity.
    • Finish
Dried tropical fruits. Cinnamon candy. Salt water taffy… or maybe Laffy Taffy. Some kind of taffy. Nougat. More nuts. Dried cherries. Raisins. Sweet Tarts. Anise. A touch of herbal tea. Really nice, but kind of medium in length. Wish it was longer.

Great whisky that shows proudly where it comes from. Strong, full of character but balanced in all its notes.

Tasted with a small splash of water.
    • Nose
Waxy sweetness, salt and light peat smoke, which increases with time. A little sherry barrel also shines through, but very unobtrusively and the whisky docile. The dirty-oily Campbeltown component, as befits a Springbank, is always present.
    • Taste
Oily. Creamy body, malt sweetness, and a tingling machine oil touch. Every now and then comes a very light sherry sweetie to Vorschien, in between reminds you of the "Campbeltown component" again and again to its origin. At the back he gets drier, the smoke increases without getting too strong.
    • Finish
Consuming, becoming strong and more dry. Woody notes, a slight pleasant peaty bitterness is to be felt until the (rather long) end.

    Blind tasting.
    • Nose
Fudge, vanilla and roses. Some sulphur and even sweets.
    • Taste
Very full with grape fruits and some sulphur. Spices, forest fruits - strawberries and cherrries.
    • Finish
      Liquorice and spicy.

    • Nose
      burnt car tires
extremely many herbs, also slightly roasted
burning cow dung in a campfire
    • Taste
      herbaceous and sweet
      Milk chocolate
      again a little muff
    • Finish
      herbaceous and sweet

This whisky is best in the mouth
    nice to drink

    a welcomed dram
    • Nose
Chocolate, cherry fruit with alcohol note
      dusty dried mugwort

a nice slightly bitter wood note
    • Taste
      sweet start
In the mouth, this slightly bitter dry wood / herbal note mixes again
      very nice combination
      a lot of chocolate
Unfortunately, as is often the case with Springbank, an alcohol note 
There is always a slight flashback to an alcohol praline
    • Finish
      medium to short
      unexciting
with chocolate and some fruit / alcohol

earthy, farmy, salty, with enough malty sweetness and a whiff of peat smoke. All that unharmed by wood. That's true Springbank spirit. Very classy!

Was ne mis-delivery! Wanted to have Batch 1 (was synonymous as stated on the HP!), But I only noticed the snuffle on the glass that it is Batch 5. Although Batch 1 was a touch better, the difference is minimal! This is not quite as powerful and fruity as the first batch. More balanced.
Despite all, a very delicious drop with very good PLV!
    • Nose
Very clear caramel note! Citrus fruits and some smoke. Cooling alcohol note. Fresh sea air and malt. Pretty hefty start in the nose!
With H2O: sherry fruit with a clearer malt. Slightly saltier and woodier before. Karamellbonbonsueße!
    • Taste
Powerful and crazy start! As in the nose a lot of caramel and citrus fruit. But also dark fruits and sherry. Oak in the form of milk chocolate and light smoke.
    • Finish
Creamy malt and caramel sweet. Add some smoke. Pleasantly warm.

Has a nice mix of caramel sweetness, some ripe fruits, smoke & peat and some medicinal / sulphur mix.It feels slightly off balance to me, but does have bold and full flavors. Somehow it doesn't connect as a whole to me. There's also too much sulphur which ruins it for me.

  28. Willie JJ scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Another fine batch of the 12yo cask strength.
    • Nose
Feisty mossy malt with a drop of calomine. Slightly smoking hemp.
    • Taste
The initial sweet hit quickly settles down to a lovely chewy, meaty experience.
    • Finish
Salt ham, salt beef and little bursts of sweetness with peppery spices exploding all over the place. Yummy.
