A really mature, old toppings from an otherwise unknown distillery. Very expensive, but also very good!

      fruity (compote, marmalade), honey, spicy oak, caramel;

      93 93
      long, nutty, spicy; fruity finale!

Without a doubt, this was the most characterful Auchroisk I have ever tried. It was far from the mild-mannered, creamy, yet, slightly bland malt I have come to expect from the distillery. I have remarked more than a few times that while I can see why a blender would love the malt as a tool, I could not understand why one would drink it as a single malt. I would not go so far as to say this has changed my mind, but I loved how the creamy malt balanced against an obvious sherry cask influence and the richer spice and mocha from European oak. The pairing of malt and cask was well done, and I am at least curious to try some younger Auchroisk stashed away in a first or second fill European oak cask. The creamy malt and the peppery-bittersweet qualities seem almost made for one another.
    • Nose
Toffee, dried fruit, and spice. Sticky date cakes, honey, butterscotch, and prickly pear cactus jelly top notes floated over a mineral, almost stone-like, undercurrent. The aroma was rich and sweet— the wife described it as vanilla-butterscotch pudding. A sweet cinnamon and cardamon spice lingered behind the caramelized sugars.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied with a rich syrupy quality that carried leather, tobacco, and spice notes. Rich notes of dried dates and sun-dried tomatoes paired with old stained wood and worn leather. Medium roasted coffee appeared on the mid-palate with treacle, cinnamon, cardamon, and scalded cream. Brown sugar and a kiss of salt lingered at the end with a tingling astringency that built over time.
    • Finish
Lingering notes of brown sugar and oak.

Old and powerful. Not a monster of complexity, but by no means boring.
    • Nose
      89 89
Hazelnuts and vanilla mix with sweet sherry and caramel, in the background the oak wood, raisins and prunes with a bit of dark chocolate, crushed bananas, honey, orange with a little alcohol, green tea, oily and also slightly spicy towards cloves, walnuts and leather , then later a lot of melon, apricot
    • Taste
      88 88
spicy and almost hot start, bittersweet oak and caramel, oily and slightly tart, hazelnuts and almonds, cinnamon and clove, after the first batch the spice becomes more velvety and tends towards fine sandalwood, sherry, orange with a hint of grapefruit, tobacco, pepper - and traces of ginger, cherry aroma and the fruity freshness of melon, honey, hints of malt and cocoa
    • Finish
      87 87
Balanced and long-lasting, warming with velvety spice, earthy cocoa, caramel, oak wood, vanilla, cinnamon, sherry, tobacco, orange, honey, pepper and a little ginger, hazelnuts, melon, clove

    • Nose
      92 92
aromatic and fruity, oak, initially a bit herbaceous, has depth. A little orange but also spices, vanilla. Looks round and appealing. Hint of smoke? Develops further in the glass, the oak notes become finer but also old and dry, a bit of orange, hint of tropical fruits, some a little overripe. Touch of coconut, a little more intense without adding water.
    • Taste
      92 92
warm, slightly oily, spicy-fruity, fine oak / wood notes, spices, a hint of barrel, a bit scented, orange, hint of chocolate, becoming delicately tart, trace of smoke. Pleasant on the palate, consistent, it works well without water.
    • Finish
      90 90
Touch then delicately tart perfumed with oak / wood notes, some cherry, spices and chocolate. At the end again slightly fruity and a hint of nutty fading.

    Nose:
Light, waxy, honey, a bit grassy, floral, sherry doesn't dominate distillate, fruity,
    Taste:
Complex, alcohol is perfectly covered, waxy again, lots of fruits, a little bit sour
    Finish:
Quite long, sweet and a bit sour

  10. Horror_Vacui scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

He was a good 1 month with 1cl in a 2cl vial around, so has already breathed well

    Nose:
The first association is that of fully ripe watermelon and honeydew melon. After the first traces of this smell, it quickly becomes darker, forest honey and malt beer, roasted almonds and hazelnuts. Fleeting and only when you mind fades the previous flavors comes a slight smell of ammonia to the nose, not disturbing, but as part of the bouquet. The next comes a very discreet slurry smell in the country. Some leather is still there.

    Mouth:
A smooth, nutty onset, accompanied by light fruit acid (kiwi) as well as melon sweetness. Caramelised walnuts, malt beer and an idea of dark chocolate.

    Finish:
Medium length, spicy-nutty, only a little bit tart, some herb bitter.

    Conclusion:
The nose was very nice, in the mouth he has broken down a bit and did not bring the flavorfulness that the nose has promised.

    Oldest

Auchroisk (pronounced ‘o-thrusjk’) is one of the lesser known distilleries, founded in 1974 to create bulk malt for the blenders with Justerini & Brooks as primary client. Luckily it is sometimes also bottled as single malt. This Auchroisk was presented in Diageo’s Special Release of 2012. It is one of the oldest – in terms of maturation – ever bottled. It is certainly the oldest that I ever tried.

Very aromatic and complex nose with on the one hand a truckload of fresh and juicy fruit – think banana, oranges, pears, red berries and green grapes – and on the other something waxy that reminds me of almond oil, freshly polished leather and scented candles. Lovely floral hint. Buttercups? Some coconut. With some imagination I even detect some woodsmoke, albeit all the way in the back. There is a lot going on here and it’s all good.

It is wonderfully oily and immediately sweet and sour with a lovely spiciness. The fruit is rather candied now, with something nutty that kicks in. The spices keep your mouth very warm. Lovely orange zest and a hint of dark chocolate. Pineapple cubes. A bit of liquorice and some chewing tobacco. This is delicious.

Wonderful, long, warm and drying finish with cloves and nutmeg at the death.

Auchroisk certainly surprised me in a very pleasant way with this beautiful release. It will set you back some 340 EUR though, but how enjoyable a malt. Thanks, Manny.

    • Nose

A bit of wood and some pasty glue at the end. Other than that, this is a warm, malty, well-rounded dram.

This limited-edition release from 2012 has a nose full of dried apricots, apples, and figs, along with hints of marzipan, allspice, old leather, and a touch of honey. The taste has a thick, oily mouthfeel with a good balance of allspice, black pepper, honey, fresh fruit cobbler, and hints of leather and caramel candy underneath. The finish is long and smooth with consistent flavors from the palate in good balance. Excellent!

Tasting Notes by Singlemaltsdirect.com:Appearance: Rich amber gold. Good beading and texture.

Nose: Light and precise, soon growing in depth and complexity. Top notes of
fresh, crisp, juicy fruit (orange peel, banana, pear skin, even fruit chews) are
backed by fragrant almond oil and rich malt. Later, leather, beeswax and a
suggestion of smoke. Water increases the scented oil and brings up fruit salad
with vanilla custard (red berries, tinned pears). Some late charred oak and smoke.

Body: Medium, oily. Richer with water.

Palate: Initially cool, smooth and sweet, with fresh acidity and a mouth-filling
texture, then warming, with smoky charred fruit, as in a burnt fruit-cake. With a
little water, less voluptuous though still cooling and coating; it?s not so sweet
now as the perfume grows and there?s an attractive dry nuttiness developing into dark chocolate, with hints of menthol and a grating of orange zest. Still smooth, fresh and well balanced, with a pleasing chewy texture.

Finish: Sustained and warming, with liquorice toffee and peppermint cordial, then bitter chocolate. Waxy too, with notes of pistachio and pecan nut. Unctuous to the last, with late beeswax and final notes of eucalyptus and clove.

Nose splendid, the rest is not far behind. Very good.
    • Nose
Very nice, melon, orange, lots of nuts (nuts, nuts, almonds), spices (chilli, ginger), some wood.

With water: a little pear is added.
    • Taste
Sweet attack on fruits (orange, pear, melon), a little caramel, a hint of vanilla, grilled hazelnuts, woody notes.

With water: The fruits are more dominant.
    • Finish
Quite long and woody, on dried fruits with a hint of pepper and a bit of bitterness.

Nose: This absolutely sings, straight from
the first nosing. Water melon, candied peel, sweet tea, a slight emulsion note,
spicy sherry oak and a hint of charred vanilla / coconut. Open, direct and
expressive. Palate: More sweetness, with candied
cherries, a burst of fresh vanilla pods, mango, some PX style spiciness and a
touch of drying American oak. This is the sort of whisky that keeps evolving,
first from the fresh fruit and sweetness, then into spicy, woody notes. With
water, the fruit gets more perfumed and a hint of creaminess develops, alongside
orange zest, milky coffee and chewy toffee. Finish: More of the lingering coffee and
tropical fruit notes.Overall: What a welcome surprise. This is
a superb release, full of complex layers of fruit, spice and creaminess. Whilst
it won't come top on the diehard Islay/peat fans lists (which is a shame, as it
kicks the arse of the Port Ellen, the Lagavulin and possibly even the Talisker)
for those in search of something different.
