Here comes another peated Single Malt that isn't from Islay: Longrow Peated (NAS) from Springbank distillery. The aroma starts out promising with intense honey-vanilla sweetness, vegetal peatiness and unmistakably coastal/briny notes. On the palate, the mouth-warming, dry and fairly spirit-driven arrival is followed by bitter lemons, white pepper and salty peat smoke. Its youthfulness shows in the earthy, mineral but surprisingly short finish that is not very substantial. To sum up, it's a fresh and appealing malt which doesn’t have the 'oomph' of Islay.

    • Nose
coal smoke, lemons, ash, some vanila. feels fresh, spirity and vibrant. Plenty of youth - 6 to 8 years only? nice start though....
    • Taste
@ 46% its got gusto. Peat, not islay peat, this is more subtle. Some astringency - grape skins and green bananas, sour lemons and salt/saline such a great combination. Some nice buttery notes. Some vanilla again. It sounds disonant but its really well balanced.
    • Finish
Long smokey ashy finish, Lemons again and wood tannins. Some honey.

I had it at 87 before I made these notes but I go up to 89/100
because that is brilliant stuff and a real bang for your buck.
    • Nose
slightly peaty and sooty/ashy but mostly very fresh and appealing.
there´s some very nice lemons as the counterpart for the peaty side. hints of vanilla, hints of oak. sunflower oil, the smell of a cotton mill.
    • Taste
just lovely! the typical ashy/dusty longrow profile that I love.
I would like to taste the new make and I bet this would be very similar to that stuff. I don´t know but can it be that this stuff doesn´t need any maturation at all to be a cracker?
salted lemons, quite some peat and ashes. develops into a nice dryness.
    • Finish
long , peaty but fresh and clean

A Longrow NAS, it feels very young about 5 years i think. But Longrow has enough character to get away with this. For the same money i prefer the Springbank 10 years, more fruity and more complex.

This is very interesting as an alternative to the whole "mild" Islay smokers. Under "Peated", however, I have introduced myself to Longrow a much smokey whisky.
    • Nose
beautiful, medical smoke; in addition fresh and floral notes; bitter and maritime-salty; Oak together with honey; in the background is a discreet muff with dust; Over time, the medical smoke turns into salted meat
    • Taste
sweet with a little oak; The smoke gradually builds up but remains rather weak, vanilla, honey and lemon, slightly dry
    • Finish
short, a little bit of smoke along with oak and vanilla; slight bitterness mixes with fruity sweetness

Creamy, peat, lemon, butter, some farmy smells, funky stuff. In the taste also cinnamon, white pepper and a long finish with peat, sweet, cream and a little sour.

Aromatic peat, heavy on sea salt, and extremely briny. Damped cardbox, with a very earthy background. Suddenly a rush of citrus fruits, and some nice grassy notes.
    • Taste
      89 89
Salty, very salty, with a smoky background. Some nuttiness appears, creamy and buttery.
    • Finish
      87 87
Sea salt, sea weed, slight bitterness, some nuttiness. Finish is medium long, with very faint smokiness.

Nosing reveals lemons, a hint of licorice, industrial smoke or maybe firelighters, hay bales, fishoil, and a light vanilla creaminess. The palate handles half a teaspoon of water very well, making the experience less spirity. It yields a lot of citrus fruits like mandarins, more vanilla and honey too, mixed with porridge, and minerally/earthy peat. The sweetness of it reminds me of nougat. The finish is short and dirty, with notes of rubber, earth and herbal/grassy bitterness. Cashews.

It's not that smokey. Really improves in the glass over time, with layers of complexity. Very solid dram!
