Famous for its 'chili catch', Talisker 10 from the Isle of Skye is said to be 'made by the sea' - a suitable analogy. Its mineral, phenolic nose reminds of fresh, salty seawater with iodine and seaweed. A light sweetness of citrus fruits combines with restrained peatiness. The arrival is strong with a rich note of malted barley and dried fruits, leaving a peppery chili burn on the palate. A real 'afterburner' that finishes pleasantly warming, intense and spicy. The only downside is the intense addition of artificial colorant (E150a), creating this unnatural amber glow.

Nose

Honey, floral peat, a touch of chili pepper, smoked dried mixed fruit, malt, and citrus (fruit and oil). Smoked meat and earthiness show up after about 10 minutes.

Taste

Malt and soft peat smokiness (similar to burning leaves), oranges and tangerines, dark chocolate, oak and a bit of sherry tannins, and smoked vanilla.

Finish

Floral-peat, a touch of chili oil, and mineral-saline and vegetal bitterness and savoriness. 

Comments

The mouth feel is pleasantly bodied and creamy and the finish lasts form spans a minute or more. For a 10 year old, this is surprisingly approachable and engaging. If you're testing the waters of peat and haven't been scared off by lightly peated whiskies, this is a good middle ground malt.

Rauch, Eiche. Mittellang.

Robe: caramel

Nez: Salin, minéral, herbacé. C'est très frais, avec un fond plus rond et doux;

Bouche: Texture onctueuse et ronde, sucrée et fumée.

Finale: fumée, douce et chaude.

Un whisky très équilibré, avec un joli nez typique. Excellent rapport Q/P dont la disparition de nos rayons est à regretter :(

[November, 2014]  I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  I took no detailed notes.

There is no accounting for taste...

erst zarter Rauch und dann viel Süße und Fruchtigkeit, ein sehr süßes Malzaroma nach geschmolzenem Toffee, die 45,8 % bringen nur eine leichte frische mit aber nichts scharfes, langsam kommt die maritime Seetang note durch, im allgemeinen eher leichter werdend, eine Zitronengrasnote kommt durch, ein Hauch Orangen-Aprikosenmarmelade zum Frühstück an der Küste.
Sehr einladend für den ersten Schluck

Taste

sehr maritim, direkt die deutlich salzigen Aromen, Seetang und etwas Pferrigkeit in richtung schwarzer gemahlener Pfeffer, irgendwo dazwischen zeichnet sich eine Teernote ab, dazu kommt dann eine schöne fruchtig süße Würze der Eiche, leichtes Aprikosenaroma wiederholt sich, ein paar Tannine sind zu spüren aber trotzdem bleibt er sehr schön ausgewogen

Finish

Das finisch ist leicht und von zartem kalten Rauch getragen, sehr angenehmes leicht trockenes Mundgefühl. Trotzdem recht lang und füllt den ganzen Mundraum

Klasse!!! Ein wirklich toller Standart der immer immer einen Platz in der Bar verdinet hat. Für mich ein klare Empfehlung

Taste

full bodied:oily,peat smoke,black pepper,curry powder,grapefruit,fruit jam,salty liquorice

Finish

rather clean with a warm afterglow: sweet peat, citrus fruits, salty, green bell peppers

A maritime and versatile whisky. Great depth, one of the best age stated 'entry level' malts! Score: 87,5 (2013 bottle)

Peat smoke, vanilla, orange.

Taste

More peat smoke, salt & pepper, sweet-sour, liquorice.

Finish

Still the peat smoke, grass/hay, wood, bread and yeast.

Quite simple but not bad.
