Absolutely brilliant Ardbeg as I would like to drink it anytime compared to almost all modern ones.
    • Nose
Slushy apple, beans, old Driftwood on the beach, dry algae, moss, old rye bread, heather, lavender, old leather, toffee and grasses are also there, wild honey
    • Taste
Algae, lavender, but also sweet apricot, peach, bitter orange, grapefruit peel, sherry wood, wild honey, sweet licorice, cocoa beans, green apple, honey-whipped oak, vanilla
    • Finish
Herbal honey, getting drier, the peat is dry back, oak, lavender, long, remainder vanilla too

Tasty, smooth, not deep, but good, although I obviously expected more from this whisky .... sorry.

Smoked fish on the coast, because I smell seaweed, Parma ham - like a burned down fisherman's hut. A subtle hint of lavender and rye bran, yeah
    • Taste
      89 89
Acetone at the start, slightly phenolic - that gets better with a few drops of water
    • Finish
      92 92
Herbs, Herbs, Herbs. Enormously long, extraordinary and good!

brilliant old style ardbeg, sweet peat and citrus

  11. OJK scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Smoke infused seaweed and olive bread, mixed with apples, lavender and black pepper. Very smoothly integrated but a bit too much ashtray on the finish for me, which slightly overshadows the enjoyable candied citrus from the palate. Otherwise a very impressive and complex dram.

  12. Alex Fridays scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

Sweet fruits, christmas cake, old leather, cream, toffee, fresh grass notes on nose.

Peated smoke, creosote, green apples, spices and oak cask notes on palate.

Spices, vanilla, dryness, light peated smoke notes on long finish.

Many thanks to Royalscotsman for the sample, old musty, zesty but such a thick mouthfeel. Great, great, great!

[November, 2002]  I had this dram during an Ardbeg rarities tasting in Bonn.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 92,5. My notes state an average blonde colour and thin legs with late big tears (oily texture at the glass).  The nose is very intense and complex with fine lacquer aromas (acetone) that I call "old bottle flavour (OBF)".  It is a sign of a high quality spirit with a perfect maturation.  The mouthfeel is both bold and smooth.  The taste is COMPLEX (I wrote the word in capital letters) with beautiful peaty flavours as well as cocoa (bittersweet) and dry dusty aromas.  The finish is long, sweet, warming and very nicely balanced.
