Reminds me a a fair bit of the HP 12 Viking Scars. Would have to taste that one to confirm if they are really similar. All around a nice whisky, but on the brink of me classifying it as a 'beginner whisky'.
    • Nose
      80 80
Light peat and fresh lime/lemon and light fruits.
    • Taste
      82 82
Nice, round. Oak, light peat, a bit of fresh fruits. A bit too light/shallow in the mouth. The taste itself is really nice, but it lacks depth.
    • Finish
      77 77
Nice peatiness and surprisingly little oak taste. Lasts about 20-30s, and isn't very complex.

Bottle opened for 10 years. The drink has kept all its freshness. A mouth which holds well and which manages to make people forget the low degree (40%). A perfectly decent whisky.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fresh, salty, salted caramel, hint of vanilla. Cereals.
    • Taste
      83 83
Fairly structured, especially for a 40%
    • Finish
      87 87
Mainly cereals but also with all the flavors perceived on the nose.

Highland park before all the marketing nonsense of the past decade or so. The whisky that put me back on track of peat smoke over 10 years ago.

No significant difference to the current version. Both are about equal. Maybe the current version has a bit more smoke and the old slightly more tangerine in the nose. For me a delicious standard. (Due to the exponentially higher price of the older version this gets in the whole here one point less than the current bottling.)
    • Nose
Honey, heather, tangerine, orange, fine smoke, clover flowers
    • Taste
clear, slightly watery, silky, orange, oats, caramel, clover sweetness, smoke, more and more dark chocolate, lots of ginger, slightly nutty
    • Finish
a lot of dark chocolate, creamy, ginger, some orange, caramel, smoke

this HP has more sherry influence
    • Nose
dusty, sherry, oily, earthy and some smoke
    • Taste
sweet port, fruity, some pepper, raisins, orange, liquorice and syrup
    • Finish

2013_03. Highland Park 12 yo OB, 4 decades blind tasting.
Highland Park 12 Jahre OB, 40%, 70 cl, ca 2000 (Code on label: 100/0000356/02)
    • Nose
musty, some chemical woodpolish, stewed fruits, bright oak, some brineyness, distant smoke, (83)
      coming
back to it: appears much more savoury now, faint oxo/boullion, dusty
pears ?!, quite mineral , quite a lot of dry bright oak now, (82)
The more often I come back to this and the more time I give it, the worse/more boring it seems to get. (74-81)
    • Taste
oily, some (undefinable) sweet esters, somewhat briney, cough/tonsolitis drops, turning quite smoky going into the finish (83)
    • Finish
more smoke, some salt again, vanilla & cereals, slightly bitter dry
wood notes in the end, occasionally becoming unpleasantly bitter &
dry with a slight cardboard note (77-82)

    A classic!

  23. I_SPEY scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The color is medium amber, the nose is smooth, medium sweet and the palate has vanilla and some peat; the finish is smooth and not long enough(for me!).

  24. Master Quill scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

I tasted 2 expressions of this.

The first release (2001), which was great as usual with first editions: 88, and a bottle from 2004, which was less great: 77. I used 83 as an average.
