Another dream Caol Ila, the Distille is just me with her oily mix of tropics, European fruits, salt and light tea notes ...
    • Nose
Typical Caol Ila oiliness with juicy tangerines and orange oil, fine salt, herbal honey, fennel and lavender, shortbread, sweet malt, some chalk, lemon grass, turmeric, some dried mango and papaya come later, unripe banana, slightly withered flowers
    • Taste
Great strong appetizer, lemon grass, orange oil, rose water, licorice, fennel, green and white tea, lavender, tangerines, grapefruit, green apple, a little pear and unripe banana, calvados, cumin, turmeric, apricot, a lot of sea salt for Caol Ila, very subtle only the tannins and sweet malt in the background, herbal honey, some chalk and pebbles
    • Finish
Dry, here comes the malt and more tannins to the front, the malt gets a right edge, rough leather, some chocolate chips, autumn leaves, lemongrass, fennel, lavender, green tea, long, warm

    Without water:
    Nose:
A very bulky nose without the addition of water. Some old newspaper, flame salmon. Two squeezes of lime. almond and olive oil. The smoke is very dry, has something of the cigarette smoke that has soaked into wallpaper.

    Mouth:
Aggressive alcohol, grilled fish with lime, walnut oil. Limestone.

    With water:
    Nose:
Significantly more accessible. Seaweed salad with sesame, grilled fish, citrus. Some menthol, camphor.

    Mouth:
Far away, and yet also close to the 18 and 25 OA. Close as there is a common DNA in the dry smoke, maritime impact and green apple flavor.
Far away, as this whisky has significantly more rough edges and is not as round. Partly as if there was a layer of dust on the whisky, as if some flavors were a bit dull.
Notes of root beer, fish fat dripping on charcoal, citrus, seawater.

    Finish:
Long, salty, some liquorice, a hint of pear.

    89/100

    Conclusion:
It's exciting that Diageo brought something like this as OA. Such characterful malts, even if not everyone likes them, I would like to have from time to time. The last few OAs outside of the core portfolio have been tasty, but this one was really exciting, a whisky that requires a lot of attention and experimentation with water. A bit exhausting in places but in the end a delicious malt.

    Blind Tasting: July 2021
    • Nose

Citrus, a scent of fuels, discrete smokiness, fire oil barrels and oiliness. A little salt and floral.
    • Taste
      92 92
Oily! Floral sweetness, lavender then the smoke explodes. Fantastic !! Cream, caramel, vanilla. Slightly grassy citrus in the background. The sweet cream comes back when the smoke dies out.
    • Finish
      91 91
Creamy toffee, caramel sweetness that stays for a long time. In great balance with the smoke, citrus and the sweetness.

Imagine your typical Caol Ila, amplified by the typical Rare Malts profile - big & bold, fat & oily. Lots of sweet smoke and creaminess, some vegetal touch, bursting vanilla and citrusy. Cough syrup, licorice, caramelized honeyed toffee on the palate. Very satisfying finish. Excellent drop.

Some golden fruits you find in PEs or older Caol ila, banana, ripe apples, a lot of clean peat, a touch of farmy notes.
    • Taste
      92 92
Sweet malt and pear drop, a little bit farmy, extremely intense and concentrated, fresh-cut mints, preserved pineapple, salty and very peaty, just great.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium, vegetable, peat smoke, a lot of camphor.

[April, 2002]  I had this dram during a Grant Carmichael tasting while cruising the river Rhine aboard MS Godesia.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 90.  My notes state a golden colour and a less oily body than the old 12-years WB id 13011.  It is smooth and of a well-balanced complexity.  After adding some water it gets rougher (I added a ? to this statement back in 2002). According to Grant Carmichael this matured (most probably) on the mainland.

A medium oily and smooth body.
    • Nose
      Very fresh. Sea air.
    • Taste
Astonishingly fresh. More sea air. Almost a sandy taste. Fresh seaweed. Sweet and dry, olivery. Sustained development of flavours
    • Finish
Big and long. Expressive. Smoky fragrance. Appetizing. Oaky dryness.

Caol Ila just as I like it, with plenty of power but still some sweetness.

Water is not needed here, pure quality.
    • Nose
Smells sweet om pineapple and a little apple mixed in with sea brine and a little honey, lovely

Also hints of blackberry or similar.
    • Taste
Creamy up front but then it explodes on your tongue, heavy and vibrant peat with some orange, caramel and biscuit with just a trace of brown vinegar
    • Finish
Long and powerful without being overpowering
