Buffalo Trace is for bourbon what Glenfiddich 12 is for Scotch: it's reliable, widely available and does the job. On the nose, you get the usual suspects - vanilla, honey and some toffee. It's quite floral and sweet with hints of apple juice and wood glue. The taste is spicier and more peppery with vanilla cream, treacle and slightly bitter oak. Shall we say 'smooth and mellow'? Distant notes of almonds, mint and refined sugar remain in the aftertaste. This benchmark bourbon will certainly not blow your socks off, but it's both enjoyable and great value for money.

You get what you pay for. Value (£18) : 9/10
    • Nose
Again like most bourbons around this price point, the nose is quite classic. Slightly boozy and very sweet. Caramels and vanillas upfront.
    • Taste
Sweet on the palate, more fruity than the initial nose.
    • Finish
      Short sweet finish

Here you get something for your money! A great whiskey for in between for less than 20 euros. Also spicier than some other bourbon. Simply a classic that should not be missing in any collection. Overall very harmonious and mild, despite the disproportionate amount of rye.
    • Nose
      84 84
very sweet, caramel, vanilla, relatively spicy on the nose, some freshly cut bread, light alcohol note, somewhat fruity (cherry, peach), herbs
    • Taste
      83 83
very sweet and mild at the beginning, then a strong spice paired with caramel, vanilla and a slight fruitiness of peach, freshness through herbs, oak, slightly nutty,
    • Finish
      80 80
short-medium length, very mild, sweet, slightly spicy, oak, malty, caramel, light vanilla, nutty

    This whiskey has annoyed me.

The more time I spend with this, the cleaner my mouth feels... and tastes.
    • Nose
      70 70
Banana, wet oak, blackberry, Demerara sugar, pear, apple. Very young and a bit soapy, but it has things happening.
    • Taste

Cheapest casks they could find. Astringent. Some vanilla and sweetness. Lots of soap.
    • Finish
      51 51
Vodka aged for a few months. Initially bitter. Vanilla, liquorice in the background. Lots of soap. Now I wonder if there was soap in my glass... nope, “treated” myself to more in a glass I knew was safe, the whiskey is the soapy one.

    • Nose
      82 82
Sweet, volatile and relatively full. Caramel dominates, then vanilla. There are some varnishes. Corn. Then a little honey comes out. Minimal spiceiness with a deep breath.
    • Taste
      80 80
Sweet, caramel, but a little less sweet than on the nose. A little more spice appears. Light oak. Corn. There are traces of varnish. The taste becomes drier over time.
    • Finish
      78 78
Sweetness, caramel, warms you up a bit. Then caramel again, light spice on the tongue. Quite a short finish.

First impressions: Good beginners whiskey, something to look out for if you're wanting sweet and smooth but straightforward.
    • Nose
      80 80
Quite closed in the beginning but after a little time in the glass it opens up a little revealing some sweet vanilla notes followed by some wood.
    • Taste
      82 82
A bit thin feels watered down and could use with more ABV (I'd like to try the 45% version).

Again, very smooth whiskey, very pleasant in the mouth with an only marginal alcoholic bite.

Loads of vanilla followed up by oakiness and a hint of spice.
    • Finish
      83 83
Rather wood-driven finish with a lingering spiciness, as well as a hint of salt.

      Medium finish.

    • Nose
vanilla, fresh wood, pineapple, syrup, wet straw, hops
    • Taste
vanilla, banana, sweet, watery, grits with syrup, marzipan, banquet bar, hazelnuts, tart aftertaste

Part of a line up with 8 different bourbon’s. From basic level to a little more advanced. This Buffalo won the toss and got to kick off
    • Nose
A little shy. But with a little hand warmth it opens up and I have to admit that this surprises me. It is rather simple though, but hey, look at it’s price. It gives all kinds of usual suspects such as honey, vanilla, almond, and corn. But also apple juice is quite prominent and that’s quite typical for this dram.
    • Taste
There is quite a decent amount of rye in this Mash bill. That typical flavor is quite present on the taste as well as salted popcorn.
    • Finish
Rather long actually. Spices like pepper and vanilla but also rum raisins, rye and nuttiness in like hazelnuts and almonds.
