Whisky Reviews for Bruichladdich 2006

  1. Gloin scored this whisky 62 points Expert Senior

I do not like the smell, the acid and putrid is no longer a pleasure for me and it does not smell like whisky. The taste fits seamlessly with the smell. The finish is the best and most likely to show whisky-typical notes. The foul impression is far too dominant and thus the whisky has failed for me. The only real positive is the not noticeable alcohol at about 50%. blank
    • Nose
It starts with slightly rotten fruit, light sulfur notes behind, apple vinegar, all not very pleasant, yeast dough
    • Taste
The impression of the nose continues in the mouth. The onset is mild and the body creamy, but immediately I have the feeling of chewing around on a honeyed eraser, sulfur, behind it is indeed a pleasant sweetness, but the superficial impression leaves me with no real pleasure
    • Finish
Fortunately, the foul sulfur effect disappears in the finish, it remains light oak and caramel, medium length

  2. vredensever scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Aroma sharp, spicy: spices (vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, pepper), corn, malt, dough with sour, vegetable oil, summer fruits, citrus, floral-herbal theme. The taste is sharp: hot pepper, vanilla, malt, bread, citrus, butter, fruit (apple rind, apricots, little citrus), sheer bitterness. Aftertaste : bitterness at the beginning; then bread and cereal notes, cereal, spices (vanilla), astringent fruits and wood, a hint of minerality. Conclusion . Simple, young, bitchy, harsh, but very cute Bruichladdich. Light and summer whisky with an attractive scent. Score 82 (n22t20f20b20).

Nose very nice although simple. The mouth is more alcoholic, unbalanced.
Tasted during a Pure Spirit evening: http://www.purespirit.fr
    • Nose
Floral and vegetal mainly. A little green fruit and vanilla, brioche.
    • Taste
Vanilla mainly. Green, vegetable, apricot kernel, plum and pepper.
    • Finish
A little dry, astringent and a myriad of spices.

I'm not exactly the alternative type that frequents Oxfam stores, but Bruichladdich has convinced me with their organic approach.
The 2006 Islay Barley has been replaced by a 2007 expression. The barley comes from Rockside Farm and is cultivated by Mark French.... Indeed, the terroir story again.

This Islay Barley is young but complex. If we can believe Master Distiller Jim McEwan, this whisky has truly captured the island's spirit. As long as I haven't been there, I'm taking it for granted.
    • Nose
The nose is a mixture of yellow flowers and barley. A heather field with plenty of buttercup flowers. Also some vanilla sugar pudding and fresh green apples.
Adding water unleashes a briny sea-breeze through a cherry orchard and at the same time brings up some sweeter notes. I'm thinking of some honey and gingerbread.
    • Taste
Sipping the whisky immediately creates a creamy mouthfeel. A freshly baked butter cake with cane sugar. There's still this distant salty note. The whisky is evolving towards oven-baked apples with brown sugar and cinnamon.
    • Finish
The finish is crisp and dry. Oak flavours and a hint of vanilla extend the pleasure of this piece of craftsmanship.
