  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Not a very complex Balblair. It's a pity that the bitterness overwhelms the fruitiness.
    • Nose
Malty intermingled with nutiness. Further on pear, peach and tangerines. Vanilla. Some earthy notes as well.
    • Taste
Bitter-sweet oakiness. Passion fruit and apple pie. Juicy with a peppery edge.
    • Finish
      Medium long. Dry. Quite bitter.

Aroma: apples, herbs, molasses, vanilla pudding, slightly peaty
Taste: apples, mint, nuts, vanilla, a little smoky
    Finish: bitter paper
    Grade: 3

Light and fruity nose at first, perhaps lacking a bit of ‘oomph’ due to the low bottling strength. However, with some time in the glass and one (and only one!) drop of water, a bit more complexity emerged: mint chocolate, pear juice, hazelnut, and a nice woody note too. There are even some hints of long-aged malt that is considerably older than 16yo. Perhaps a few older casks in the mix? Fruity, nutty and vibrant on the palate, with later emergence of some chilli and pepper, leading to a spicy but creamy medium-length finish.

A firm smooth and textured body.
    • Nose
      Nutty. Light, fresh spiciness. Fragrant.
    • Taste
smooth and surprising satisfying. Again the saltiness and shortbread. Chocolate shortbread. A light whisky packed with flavours.
    • Finish
      Toffee apples. Cedary dryness.

I finished my bottles ages ago and can`t remember this much peat maybe this 2005 edition had more peat but nothing like I remember it???

    Very good whatever it is?
    • Nose
Much more peat than I remember and I have had a few bottles of this.

Peaty and a little farm yard in the mix smells like a Springbank with some brine, fresh seaside air, caramel and distant white  fruits.
    • Taste
Nice mouthfeel with some peat at the front but then it subsides to reveal some mango, apple and a little fresh pineapple. It is creamy on buttercream and a touch of salted caramel
    • Finish
Good medium length and lip smacking to be honest

N: Is that E150? - probably. Initially seems like a ’70’s blend, its rather sweet and fruity with fresh and dried apples [with apple skin potency too], over-stewed [burned] pears in a shortbread/rolled oat crumble with toasted hazelnuts sprinkled on top lightly seasoned with white pepper. Theres a strange toasted-smoked oiliness here too along with orange essential oil and nutty soap. Curious but enjoyable apple/candy, floral~fresh, grassy sweetness is the order of the day. Much to discover here.
T: Rather softer arrival than id imagined from the nose. Waxy, salted caramel with peppery oak shavings at first with spirit developing before becoming more buttery on development [if kept in the mouth], Theres is a roughness to this Balblair on the development but there are plenty of twists and turns to distract the palate. The malty-oaky-spirity, sour=sweetness is maintained into the finish. With water the arrival is sweeter but the development is similar but with more waxy caramel showing into the finish.
F: Sour=sweet tartness is maintained before the whole lot diminishes rather quickly but nicely and controlled. Grassy, oaky, fresh apple skin and dry oak remains for a second finishing phase. Theres a dry, oaky, mossy chalkiness at the death.
C: A turbulent journey dram but a good one nevertheless with plenty to be discovered along the way.

    Scores a B-

altogether light and yet spicy with increasing dryness
    • Nose
ethereal, almost cutting freshness; subtle sherry sweets; malty-buttery base; if anything, only a hint of smoke
    • Taste
buttery, slightly salted shortbread; a little nut and honey
    • Finish
ethereal notes as of pine needles; Slightly sprightly over time, yeast dough, nut chocolate

A pleasant and uncomplicated malt, which should also be especially the friends of lighter Stöffchen.
    • Nose
Light, alcohol stays pleasant in the background. Fruits and hay as well as heather and malt are harmoniously present. Round and pleasant.
    • Taste
Light honey sweetness, soft and delicate, dry and slightly bitter on the finish.
    • Finish
Dry and warm, medium in the finish.

A lovely gentle matured malt whisky, wich should one have on their shelf (whell that's at least that's my opinion)
    • Nose
A light and, fresh (sea air) start, nice fragance, some sweet vanillins nutty like aroma's.
    • Taste
Very smooth, not agressive but gentle with some layers of sweet fruit and whif of salt.
    • Finish
Some toffee like fruity dryness, not very long but satisfying.

"Although Balblair has now gone on to bigger and better things, this

discontinued 16yo still has many admirers: `...an outrageous outbreak of

spicy, multi-layered oaky complexity...This is startlingly

wonderful...Brilliant. 9/10` Jim Murray in Whisky Magazine, Nov 2000"
