A quite spicy and grassy Tomatin 76. Not as much to my liking as the fruitier ones that I tried earlier. The arrival was a little bit sharp and metallic, slightly overpowering the fruity notes. The nose was definitely the best part for me and typical Tomatin 76 signature. Anyway, slightly disappointing, I must say. The first Tomatin 76 that I rated lower than 90 points.

Thanks to Ruben @whiskynotes.be for the generous sample!

    Wow! Really nice one!

Blood oranges, raisins, syrup, darker fruits in the nose. Citric, grapefruits. Some leather elements and nuts. Sherry cask is getting louder then the spirit. I am deducting a few points for that. But lets be honest, it is still awesome!

Juicy fruits, also raisins like in the nose, mouth watering! Briefly a slightly metallic edge but nothing disturbing. After that stewed dark fruits, marmelade style. Grapefruits, fresh oranges, fresh and sweet at the same time.

Slightly drying in the finish, blood oranges, dried figs. Then much fresher with again grapefruits, oranges, passionfruit and a hint of oak.

Tomatin 36 yo 1976 “Full metal dram” (49,3%, The Whiskyman for Fulldram 2012, 103 btl.)

Nose: alright! An excellent nose, full of juicy citrus with a good dose of sherry (I’d say a tiny bit more than usual). There’s tangerine, blood orange, pink grapefruit, apricot, banana and guava. Nice vanilla cake and honey. A little almond cream. There seem to be more mint and grasses than in similar releases, as well as a hint of silver polish (the metallic hint they’re referring to in the epitheton). A little oak polish too, but oak itself is hardly to be found. Superb. Mouth: very sweet at first, with red fruit jam, cooked peaches, half-dried prunes and then a brighter, very beautiful wave of typical Tomatin goodness: pink grapefruit, passion fruits, tangerine. Lovely depth and complexity. There’s a secondary theme of sweet oak, soft herbs and fruit tea. A nice touch of mocha glaze in the aftertaste. Finish: very long, softly drying on fresh herbs, with a lot of sweetness still.

An excellent example of Tomatin 1976, probably the best one we’ve had so far. Around € 185 at the time, but all 103 bottles have found a new home already. Not mine, unfortunately, as I wasn’t an official member of the club yet. I’m willing to adopt!

Nose: Sherry, grapefruit, juicy grapes (but also raisin notes), delicately spicy, salty almonds, malty toffee and dried tobacco leaves. Strangely, even slightly green and fresh notes.
Taste: Soft, round and very harmonious, more spicy and powerful, faint dark fruit flavors and slightly tart leather notes, which go into a perfect nut-wood combination.
Finish: Long, very malty, large nut mix with a creamy combination of coffee, latte macchiato and cream.
Note: This Tomatin comes out in taste and finish with almost no fruit flavors!

I also get the information that the bottling is "sold out"...
