This whiskey just confirmed to me, that "Irish single pot still" is my best. Briliant combination of spices with sweetness. Significant honey notes, lot of creamy vanilla /even vanilla puding/, waxiness, milk chocolate, creme brulee, lovely fruitiness /especially oranges, maybe grapefruit, peaches, caramelized apples, hint of tropical fruit/, different variations of spices, nutmeg, oakiness. Long sweet and spicy finish. Delicious dessert, full body and intense. Brilliant dram, I love this unique old Irish style of whiskey production - mixture of malted and unmalted barley.

Nice and sweet, some spices. Good Irish stuff
    • Nose
      Apricot, grain, almond, some sulphur
    • Taste
Raisin, dried apricot, almond, vanilla, caramel
    • Finish
      Oak, almond, vanilla, cloves

I will have to rate this one slightly higher than the green spot due to it's clearly higher maturation, the wow effect was not there as much for anymore after tasting the green spot but you can clearly feel how this is more complex on all the notes
    • Nose
Depper and more ripe fruits, almost buttery
    • Taste
      Ripe fruits, sweet wine, spicies
    • Finish
Very full finish, mouthfilling and it slowly turns into spiciness

  4. Drum scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

I really liked this Irishman, it's sweet, easy to drink and you hardly notice the 46% - nice!
    • Nose
Very sweet, I immediately had cakes and sweet pastries in mind, sherry, plum cake, banana, vanilla and fresh flowers. Also caramel and I think it has typical bourbon notes.
    • Taste
Again sweet and pastry; Canned fruit, marzipan, a light tingling mouthfeel and sparkling wine.
    • Finish
Mild and medium to long. Warm and semolina. The previously fresh flowers on the nose turn into wilted flowers with a heavy sweetness. Then he says goodbye with a light bitter almond aroma.

  5. g00se scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    Very nice Irishman.
Quite fruity and sweet on the nose, despite its young age. In the taste and finish, it's a bit too woody-bitter for me. I like the Illicit Stills or Licensed Dram better.
    • Nose
      87 87
Fruity like garden fruit, like ripe apples and pears, but also a lot of vanilla. Needs a little air to lose the alcoholic sting. A sweetness of marzipan and cotton candy develops from the vanilla. Very harmonious and present. But I can also understand if that might be too sweet for some people. Reminds me a bit of GlenLivet's Double Oak. But this one isn't colored!?
Over time, the barrel influences alternate. Now more berry-cherry.
    • Taste
      86 86
The oak shows up in the taste. Initially still quite strong in the attack by the 46%, there is a torrent of berries and cherries, followed by a good deal of wood. I can't keep it in my mouth for long.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-length finish with grapes and an underlying bitterness. Pleasant after the second sip.

I can smell a complexity of scents such as peaches and honey. A spicy scent of black pepper penetrates in between. Grassy tones and white grapes follow. An oily odor at the end.
    • Taste
      91 91
Again an explosion of flavors. Delicious sweet flavors of honey and pineapple comes through immediately. We remain on the fruity side with red apples. After a few seconds black pepper and red chili peppers. At the end I taste sweet chocolate milk again.
    • Finish
      92 92
Long, dry and fruity. Nutmeg and barley keeps lingering for a long time.

  14. craide scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Great Irish guy who looks a bit older than he is. The aromas appear a little more intense. For me a very good example of a single pot still whiskey.
    • Nose
      87 87
The first step is determined by the spicy pot still notes, the many intense fruit notes seem more ripe, almost overripe like a fruit compote or must. There is also oak and a nice spicy note of cinnamon and nutmeg. Apricots, peaches, cherries and some ripe bananas and pears. In the background, a slightly floral aroma of hay, grain and malt comes through. But that seems to be rather dusty and musty.
    • Taste
      87 87
Soft, creamy start, intense woody barrel spice, a little vanilla and creme brule, the spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper provide a nice, light, tingling spiciness with the spice. By no means alcoholic. On the palate, the fruitiness is only slightly reduced, but apricots, peaches and a little coconut are still present. Somewhat bitter chocolate / nougat and coffee come to the front from the background, mix in well and bring out the spices again.
    • Finish
      86 86
The malt finishes off with a medium-long finish, spicy, fruity with vanilla and sweet, light honey.

A really decent whiskey. The aroma is nice and fruity, the taste is then more dominated by the oak.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a large bottle for me, but you can try it again at some point.
    • Nose
A mixture of exotic and yellow fruits. Lychee, dragon fruit, khaki, physalis and apricots. A certain reminder of a rum with a slightly dirty distillery character. Bitter almond flavor. Fudge. Some oatmeal. Maybe completely removes rancid butter.
    • Taste
Pleasant, almost mild start. Butter cream. Beautiful sweetie. Not quite as fruity as it was on the nose. But then comes a decent, but pleasant seasoning. Oak tones and chocolate. Apricot peel. A couple of citrus fruits.
    • Finish
      Orange peel. Licorice. Tree bark.

A very good Irish with the Madeira casks coming out on top.
First 1/4 of the bottle would have given it a 88 but after some time open it has lost the sharp edges that I quite enjoyed, but still a solid 87.
    • Nose
Sweet stone fruits, apricot, peach slight over ripe pineapple.
Minor musty undertone to it to round it off. Very pleasant.
    • Taste
Butter, honey, sweet white wine, stone fruit, un-malted grain, barley sugar’s, drying to a very slight bitterness.
    • Finish
Medium length with white wine and raw barley

  18. Gweddry scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

uninteresting aroma and reverberation, the taste is delicious
    • Nose
coconut, vanilla, butter biscuits, fruit, oak, sherry, apricot jam, toffee, egg liqueur, tiramisu, spices, bourbon end, crown-royal-like :(
    • Taste
full, fruit, vanilla ice cream, coconut, sweet, cream, then bitter with spices, vanilla toffee, potstill
    • Finish
apple peels, vanilla, butter cookies, wood, dried apricots, a trace of sherry

Fortunately, the first shock of cheese feet in the nose has (once again) turned out to be a chimera. A single pot still as it is in the book - and lucky that the spot range is so broad again after years (decades) of serving.
    • Nose
      88 88
Now that's interesting: as with Yellow Spots from other years, I have an association with him with cheesy feet and unwashed sports clothes. A sip helps to eliminate this impression, but this phenomenon is strange ...
So now spicy pot still notes, softened by the participating Malaga barrels, which together with the sherry barrels bring some fruit into the nose: apricots, peaches and light grapes. In addition, barrel wort, which is a little musty and musty, but becomes very tasty together with pepper and nutmeg.
    • Taste
      89 89
Soft and very creamy start, which immediately makes you think of white coffee, toffee and chocolate cake - whereby the chocolate cake is powdered with a selection of spices that hardly leaves anything to be desired in pot still spices: pepper, clove powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, Coriander. Subtly fruity, apricots and peaches in the background, then always pushing forward.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, still creamy, spicy, alternating between fine dry and sweet. Spices and fruit notes (here now also strawberry!) Have hooked up to say goodbye and sway a round together. Cocoa, nougat and marzipan at the end.

Really good - my 2nd bottle, but somehow the spirit struggles to come through so much as my earlier bottle (2018?).

I'm hoping it improves as the level goes down in the bottle. Definitely much better than green-spot which to my taste is over-rated & far too young

Richly spicy coconut oak - gorse flowers. caramalised pineapple.
    • Taste

  31. PEATYBOI scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

Extremely fruity on the nose. With time, vanilla, coconut, whip cream, and toffee develops.

On the palate, loads of vanilla, milk chocolate, tiramisu, coffee beans. The palate does not match the nose.

The finish is medium with lingering butterscotch and espresso acidity.

  32. erikz scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    Had a sample of this.

Irish delight. Soft, sweet, fruity and fatty although the finish is light. Big fruit basket with honey, vanilla and caramels. Didn't expect this with the fatty mouthfeel. Not too complex, needs the 46%. Definitely distillate from the Midleton stills, shines through. Compared this side to side with a Midleton very rare (2017) and it can almost keep up with it quite nicely, although the Midleton has way more complexity to it.

Need a bottle, this is a great daily dram.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt:

The Yellow Spot is a single pot still Irish whiskey which has been matured in three types of cask: American Bourbon cask, Spanish Sherry butts and Spanish Malaga casks for a sweeter flavour.

Nose: There are masses of fleshy stone fruit on the nose, especially peach and apricot with hints of sherried dried fruit and Bourbon cask vanilla.

Palate: The palate is equally fruity with a substantial body and a velvety texture.

Finish: The finish is long and sweet with notes of marzipan and dried apricots.

Overall: This is very different to the Green Spot we all know and love with a delicious sweetness to it and a firmer body.

My comment: agree with MoM (sweet, fruity, peach, dried apricots and vanilla). I've discovered and tasted it at the Whiskey Live Paris 2018 show on last september. I've also tasted the 3 Green Spot ('Chateau Leoville Barton', 'Chateau Montelena' and the 'Single Pot Still'), good but under the Yellow Spot. Slainte!

  43. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Indulgent, opulent, silky and rich, this is teenaged Irish whiskey nearing perfection. In direct comparison to its younger sibling (Green Spot), the twelve-year-old expression has more wood influence, more spices, more "dark" aromatics, and more depth and intensity. Conversely, it boasts less "bright", youthful fruitiness. The signature tropical fruit notes have become waxier, oilier, and gained surprising levels of mellow maturity. Actually, if I were to have this blind, I'd deem this way older than its stated twelve years of age - it noses more like an at least sixteen-year-old malt. Lots of umami and soft rancio notes, surely imparted by the fortified wine casks.
All in all, this is an obvious - and delightful - upgrade of Midleton's seven-to-eight-year-old modern classic, the Green Spot, and is well worth the premium it requires to purchase a bottle, IF (and that's a big "if") you cherish dark, woody, cask-heavy flavors over spirit-driven florals and fruitiness. I for one, definitely prefer this older version. The thick, lush fruitiness next to this waxy, oily, syrupy side makes for a winning combination. It may seem slightly expensive for twelve years, but given what it has to offer, it's a bargain at any price below 60 €.

Sweetness, apples, vanilla and caramel notes come during drinking this whiskey. It’s a smooth, easy to drink and has a good taste. I like it!

  45. markjedi1 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Nice Irish, but fairly expensive for what you get with its price tag of around 75 EUR.
    • Nose
Grassy nose on heather, hay and honey with some nutmeg and loads of peach. Some caramel and quite some almonds. Banana and coconut. A hint of milk chocolate. Soft, approachable and pleasant, but most of all very Irish.
    • Taste
It is oily and sweet, but a touch sharp at first sip. Again that grassy character with the yellow fruit, but also some cappuccino and green tea. Toffee apples? Milk chocolate returns.
    • Finish
The medium long finish offers more milk chocolate, pepper and coconut.

  46. thijs100 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Big, bold, spicy. Exactly what I'd want from this style of whiskey.
    • Nose
Apricots and ripe bananas, as well as a touch of cardboard. Some sweet grains and toffee too, followed by mild notes of milk chocolate and vibrant orange zest, with finally a whisper of aniseed.
    • Taste
Creamy and rich, this has that classic Irish pot still profile, with some cough syrup, menthol, dried red fruits, and bitter oranges. Of course a good amount of spiciness also, mainly nutmeg, pepper and clove. Some almonds too. Big-bodied.
    • Finish
      Lingering spices, slightly herbal.

what to say, compared to his little brother, he develops more flavors and does not have the same sweetness, but the multiple fruits felt are a plus undeniable!
    • Nose
various fruits, exotic and also green (apple, pear), cinnamon, candies acidulated with this artificial side, then vanilla and quite fine woody, followed by malt almost to excess!
    • Taste
same scents with a certain heaviness in mouth, little spicy, we feel the alcohol after a while!
    • Finish
simple, but long enough on these aromas, the return of the acidulous candy remains in the bottom of the glass.
malt, fruit, vanilla, sweet caramel and peppery spice. a very good basic dram scents question.

A story of two halves: Pronounced sweet grains on the nose, well-balanced, deeper malts on the taste. Just as drinkable as its Green Spot cousin, but offering a very different Pot Still experience.

The nose is overall fruity but it is slow to reveal itself and is much less appetizing than the Green Spot. The palate is very fruity, especially yellow fruits (exotic fruits?). The bourbon barrels are revealed in the mouth late but with authority! But where are the sherry casks? Perhaps in this note woody but too green for a 12 years and that leaves a hint of aggressiveness with each sip and prevents the roundness expected (too much?) To settle. An exceptionally long final centered on a fruit in particular that I can not yet identify. I stay a little on my hunger. I stay on the Green Spot even though both whiskeys have little in common - surprisingly enough.

Very good but I somehow prefer the wine cask Green spot (Leoville Barton) for a similar price. This is a bit more complex but less striking.
    • Nose
Gourmand, homemade violet candies, vietnamese herbs, mint, guava
    • Taste
Fruity and juicy, rasberries, rasberry wafers (caramelized rasberry jam), oak spiciness
    • Finish
Delicious oak spiciness, some hints of a good rye whiskey, nutmeg, flawless really.

    • Nose
Peach, mint, caramel, banana, vanilla, tangerine, cherry and a little spice.
    • Taste
Caramel, peach, orange, bourbon-style spice, banana and cherry. A bit thin compared to the nose. Not really integrated and a bit blend-like.
    • Finish
      Caramel, apple and orange.

    80P

Smell: sweet, fruity, strawberry, honey, rum aroma, vanilla, cake dough, caramel, fig, peach

Taste: hazelnut, vanilla, caramel, cane sugar, biscuit

Finish: light wood notes with water

Verdict: Good stuff, but it lacks the power

Much more mature than the Green Spot, very sweet, very spicy. Also a really great Irishman.
    • Nose
very sweet and fruity, really ripe fruit. But in the background the grassy note and the grain, which also marked the Green Sport. Add some vanilla. Ripe and sweet, but less fresh.
    • Taste
The sweetness is powerful, but also a few spices, oak, nutmeg, a good portion of pepper.
    • Finish
first the pepper dominating, then the whiskey goes in a spicy finish with oak some fruits.

A whiskey "whole"! Powerful, aromatic, balanced. A nice surprise. It is perhaps a pity that it is so monolithic, offering us only a sweet register. If you like this kind of profile, go for it! A pleasure whiskey without a doubt!
    • Nose
we smell a lot of alcohol. Notes a little dusty wood, graphite, and then a vegetal side: green tea, mint, fresh grass, green wood. A little sweet side tickles our nostrils, with fruits like banana, coconut, peach, but also a little more chemical stuff like marshmallows. The set is soft, round and easy. It's very nice, even if I would have had slight notes of solvent.
    • Taste
it's oily and oily! It had been a long time since I had had such a "heavy" whiskey in my mouth. It's sweet, but not disgusting thanks to the vegetal side always present, although largely relegated to the background. This whiskey is a real treat: banana, loukoum, honey, milk chocolate, a touch of coffee. The alcohol is well integrated, the aromas are powerful.
    • Finish
oily, oily, long, full of fruit and sugar!

A very nice whiskey, one of the best (if not; the best) Irish whiskeys available at this moment.
    • Nose
Very fruity, apples, raisins, sweet sugar, lots of vanilla, heather. And a lot more...
    • Taste
Fruity and very spicy, powerfull but sweet.
    • Finish
Long and sweet. The spices remain very long. Nice.

I rarely praise Iry, this is one of those rare cases, I enjoyed, the Irish know too, but only occasionally, and when it's done, it is inexorably expensive. Which also applies in this case. Tasty at the Whiskey Festival 2014.
    • Nose
Vanilla sweet, candy fruit, honey, with a touch of fresh grass and spices. (86 b)
    • Taste
Very smooth, with vanilla, honey, distinctly butter, or more precisely butter biscuits "Club", I feel a lot there. At the same time sweetness and masquerade balance the power and sharpness of alcohol. (86 b)

    This is quite
different from the Green Spot, but I think 65 to even 75 EUR is quite
    expensive.
    • Nose
      Peach and pepper.
That is the essence of this nose. Then a good dollop of heather honey, a light
touch of nutmeg and hay. Something green that is hard to pinpoint. Almond
      paste. Soft nose, fairly sweet.
    • Taste
      It is oily and sweet
on the palate, with an immediate burst of spices. Some milk chocolate, green
apples, dextrose and even a hint of cappuccino. The peach and pepper return.
    • Finish
      The finish is pretty
long, on apple and pear, supported by the spices.

I am really impressed by the substantial flavors in this whiskey. The sweetness from the malaga casks goes very well with this particular style. Very nice indeed.

    Rating interval 87-89
    • Nose
Complex nose, tropical fruits, Eau de Cologne, hay and herbal tea bags before being added to the cup of water. Vanilla, icing sugar, tobacco and canned peaches.
    • Taste
It's a sweet and dry delivery with white sugar, cedar wood, almond and cracked black pepper. Lovely texture.
    • Finish
The finish is medium in length with pepper corns, well balanced oak, avocado and black tea. Also, there is something reminding me of chewing a graphite pencil (or rather the yellow paint).

one of the good Irish whiskey, nice when traditions come alive again. Price is justified .. taste surprised positive. I'm curious if a red spot will be released.
