A very well made whisky, but since it is on par or maybe even slightly above the podium whiskys in terms of price, it has a poorer price / performance ratio. Kavalan can do more.
    • Nose
      82 82
Sweet with a bit of undifferentiated exoticism such as mango, litchi or apricots, citrus hints but also a little spice that may come from the sherry barrel.
    • Taste
      83 83
At first it is creamy and sweet, then there are more spicy aromas that end slightly bitter. The 46% show up and suggest a rather young whisky.
    • Finish
      80 80
The finish is relatively short, without the fruity notes, rather woody and a slightly bitter aftertaste, not unpleasant, but also not convincing.

    • Nose
Very soft and fruity; one recognizes the character of the distillery well; a lot of fruit (exotic fruit)
    • Taste
In the taste I have an exotic fruit basket, lychee, pineapple, papaya; very mild and pleasant. Great oak note
    • Finish
similar to the taste, very pleasant and mild

Aroma sweet: a lot of spices (cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, herbs), milk chocolate, toffee, creamy fudge, tropical fruits (banana, mango, citrus), wood. The taste is sweet, spicy, confectionary: sponge cake with cream, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, spices, butter, tropical fruits; in the end, a slightly astringent oak. Delicious! Aftertaste : astringent oak (unobtrusively), fading confectionery sweetness, fruit chewing gum. The average duration. Conclusion . Sweet, confectionary whisky. Smooth, tasty, moderately crooked. Rating: 83 (n21t21f21b20).

good but not worth the price,
cheaper in Europe than in Asia
    • Nose
grain, bread, white wood, light fruits,
      vanilla, hints of floral
    • Taste
      honey, vanilla, wood spice, syrupy
      fruits, hints of orange peel
    • Finish
      short-medium, aromatic wood spice, tree

An effective dram but no frills. It's nice, but do not try to find an ounce of finesse in this whisky, which is mainly recreational. A good summer whisky!
    • Nose
we have here a very perfumed nose. The influence of the bourbon cask is impressive. In turn, fruits like banana or more exotic things like mango, but also vanilla, honey, cinnamon. The set is very nice and suggests a very sweet mouth.
    • Taste
bingo. It's creamy and sweet, but not disgusting. Many spices, cinnamon, vanilla, papaya, honey, mango. Peppermint comes to make it all. Very nice, despite the total lack of complexity. The addition of water puts even more emphasis on the freshness of the dram. However, we remain on a rather limited aromatic field.
    • Finish
almost no persistence in the mouth. All falls, unfortunately, very quickly.

Pretty yellow color. Very pleasant, soft, fruity smell. A first sip is very mild on the tongue, as bites, nothing burns, despite the young age. There is some vanilla, maybe apple. Medium-length finish. Very nice. I would refill now if I had a bottle here ...

for 55 € OK, despite Vatting the 8 barrels neat character and corners, the sharpness is almost too intense for me
    • Nose
sweet, slightly fresh, orange marmalade, apricot, banana, honey, cinnamon, a touch of floor wax
    • Taste
spicy, dry, almost a bit dusty, cinnamon, ginger, good pepper, oak, slightly bitter citrus notes, dark chocolate, coffee
    • Finish
medium long, dark chocolate, orange, pepper

It's different, but pretty good. I'm guessing the eight different cask types used for this Kavalan have something to do with it being a bit peculiar.
    • Nose
Lots of (exotic) fruits, mainly banana and pineapple, but also oranges. And vanilla and toffee and you get a very sweet nose, albeit a bit of a weak one. Below the surface there are some subtle spices.
    • Taste
A very peppery delivery and oily mouth feel. It's also pretty dry and cinnamon-y. It takes a while for the tropical fruit to come through, but then you get ripe mango and banana. The palate is pretty rich, but slightly bitter and has a hint of glue.
    • Finish
Bitter orange, mango and spices. Also some glue. Medium in length.

  15. KayMeertens scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

    Reminds me of Nikka.
    • Nose
Apricot, honey, plum,  vanilla, orange, banana and a little mocha. Some mature notes but it stings in the nose like chilli pepper nevertheless. A little glue as well.
    • Taste
Apricot, caramel, apple, vanilla and pepper. Too sharp at its low ABV.
    • Finish
Caramel, peach, apple, grain and pepper. A little cocoa and smoke. The glue also returns plus something dry and slightly musty like chestnut.

  16. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

N: sharp with sweet exotic fruits - pine apple and banana, apple, pear, grapes, orange, some polish, spices - cinnamon, honey and later creamy (advocaat)
T: malty - grains, a bit young with bitter sweet fruits - apricot, rum, some caramel, nuts and soft spices - white pepper
F: short whit malty tones - grains, sugar and alcohol like a cheap rum of vodka

despite the sharpness this could be a nice (young) fruity speysider with an interesting nose!

package, this King Car. I am truly impressed. Around 80 EUR, which I find a bit
much. But then, it has to travel many miles. Much better than the two standard
    Kavalan offerings.
    • Nose
      The nose is
very fragrant and fresh, with exotic fruit like banana and oranges, toffee and
some white fruit, vanilla and honey. Coconut as well. I feel the bourbon cask
contributed a lot to the aroma. Sublte spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.
After a few moments, some mango and papaya emerge. Becomes creamy.
    • Taste
      It is very
oily and the attack is spicy. It is immediately drying, which suggests a wine
cask. Wood shavings. Malt. Mango. A little zesty. Seville oranges make it
      somewhat bitter. Hints of chocolate.
    • Finish
      In the
rather long finish, the malt and vanilla linger.

"A limited edition whisky from King Car`s Kavalan distillery in Taiwan,

part of their range which also includes the orchestrally inspired Solist

series. The whisky was selected to show off the range of flavour that

the distillery can produce and reflect the multi-armed nature of their

    parent company."
