an initially quite closed whisky. He needs time in the glass to open up. At the same time it is extremely complex. It will be exciting to get involved in it again in a new tasting.
    • Nose
      92 92
sweet sherry paired with notes of sulfur and egg liqueur alike, freshly cooked boiled beef in the vegetable broth, ripe heart cherries, warm fresh sweet cereal baby porridge, fresh belgian waffles with whipped cream, pear compote
    • Taste
      87 87
bitter oak that is very present and is getting stronger - so much that it already overridden to the bitter as bitter cough syrup, very short very restrained sweetness, then sliding off in aromas of menthol and old cognac
    • Finish
      86 86
For a long time a medium strong bitterness remains, old cognac notes, sedate sweet sherry, involuntary bite into a dry dry herbal bag a la Bouquet garni

The difficulty here is that there were a good number of bottlings of MacPhails 50 in the screw cap. Lincolnimp mentions JG/CHI, I've seen IF/CA and I've heard of others. MasterQuill says it is Macallan, well G&M say it wasn't the same distillery for each bottling so who knows.

I tasted enough of the younger ones in the range to appreciate there was a lot of variation so if anyone can add to the tasting notes at this late stage, it would be helpful to include the bottling code.

Interesting stuff. Very slowly opening, a lot of air help to find a lovely side. But sure this is a Macallan? The age doesn't come through, and 40% ABV is a bit low, but still has a potential.
    • Nose
Sherry, honey, salted caramel, forest fruits and creamy peat. Herbals and negro candy.
    • Taste
Sherry and spicy oak. Honey, milk caramel, fruits, citruses, nutmeg and ash.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy.

This was from an almost full bottle, I had the 2nd or 3rd dram out of it, is my palate off because I cannot understand how this is averaging into the 90`s.

Lacks body and finish but perhaps I am having an off night.I need to re taste this, to see what its like in a few days time.

Too weak for me, no wonder Macallan  let G&M have it.

Underpowered in my view and promises far more than it delivers.Am I drinking something else to the other people that scored this?
    • Nose
Restrained sherry, light and aromatic and also an oily/nutty smell, a little leather, cranberry, fudge an digestive biscuits.
    • Taste
Some bitterness there and its flat, on the back of the palate there is almost a promise of what it should taste like, with honey and biscuit. Some fudge flavours emerge and then some sweet notes on dark honey and a little chocolate.
    • Finish
Not the longest, and lacking to be honest.
