Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 15-year-old GM

This tastes much older than 15 years. Definitely old style malt and while lower in abv, it’s definitely fuller in flavour. Still can’t help but wish it was higher abv, but it’s a good performing 40% at least. Elegant and luxurious, totally my jam.

I hate scoring malts like this because I love the nose so much, but the palate and finish just cannot keep up, so they always score lower than what they are worth in my mind. Let’s say a very enthusiastic 90.

I did not find any sulphur notes.

Wonderful OBFs, old antique wood, some herbs like thyme and bay leaf, Terry’s chocolate orange, lacquer, old wax, expensive vanilla, coins. Really pretty nose and one that I’m partial to. Really old, elegant, and luxurious. From the nose alone I would guess it was 40 years old.

Old wood, milk chocolate, wafers, rich and decadent, vanilla bean ice cream and earl grey tea. You can tell it’s lower abv, but the flavours are nice and full. Not watery, but also not full.
    • Finish
      88 88
Varnished wood, long finish, drying black tea, dark chocolate, walnut, soft black licorice. Firm wood, but it’s not too much for me.

This is quite a substantial fruity malt that taste older than its stated 15 years.
It is syrupy with bucket loads of spice, a little chocolate , a little orange and some peat that mixes with the sherry beautifully.
Pretty powerful and only 40%, a good offering by GM but there is a negative, there is some sulphur on show here, not massive but if you are sensitive you will taste it, that alone knocks a couple of points off but still a respectable score from me

  4. St. Pauli scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Well-made whisky. I really like this earthy taste of cough syrup. It doesn't reach 90, because of the fact that it's at low strength and therefore not as powerful as a 90+ should be.
    • Nose
Quite earthy: Old school licorice and aniseed, twigs and leaves. Then, fresh brambles, orange juice, honey, waxy barley, vanilla and eucalyptus.
    • Taste
Cough-syprup like, with even more licorice and aniseed, thyme and eucalyptus. Further: orange (juice and zest), dried apricot, old school barley (no, they don't produce that anymore), a pinch of pepper and some lovely vanilla.
    • Finish
Relatively short, but pleasant. It's a combination of the cough syrup character and the fruit.
