A decent dram for me, sadly the price is rising but still good value. The best thing for this one is the combination of sweetness and spicy taste, not flat
    • Nose
      84 84
      Honey, summer flowers, apples, ginger
    • Taste
      85 85
very sweet, apples and almond comes first, then honey with a little bitter taste, followed by ginger and citrus, spicy beneath tongue, great complexity for a young one
    • Finish
      83 83
short-medium, oak, a bit drier than taste, a hint of citrus peel

If you like sweet and at the same time spicy and fruity whisky, this is the place for you. Not a high-flyer, but solid.
    • Nose
Quite floral, wildflower honey, also some beeswax, pear, slightly like marzipan, almonds and green hazelnuts provide a nutty contribution, a hint of vanilla
    • Taste
It lands tingly in the mouth, then quickly becomes sweet, the honey is confirmed, caramel, prunes, spicy-flowery barley transitions into an appealing note of malt
    • Finish
The oak appears rather short, powerful and dry, plum liqueur, cinnamon, dark chocolate

Almost 20 years ago (2003) the whisky I have in my glass today was bottled. I am a big fan of such whiskys and am convinced that a whisky improves in terms of structure after one or more decades in the bottle (bottle maturation). And of course also that better casks were used at that time, simply because the range of casks was even larger.

And this bottling is a nice representative of these old standards, which usually only have 12 years on the label.
I think the links here with offers from 32 euros do not lead to the old bottling from 2003, but you can still find some of this bottling on the Internet and it costs well under 100 euros. I would always go for the old bottling that may have been in the bottle for a decade or two. This one is between 86 and 87 points.
    • Nose
      86.5
Nice clean nose with aromas of nuts (almond and cashew), marzipan, malt and some oak. Subtle fruity notes of raisins and sultanas.
    • Taste
      86.5
On the palate an intense sweetness of raisins and light sherry flavors as well as some wood at the back. Totally corresponds to what the nose suggests. The 43 percent is absolutely sufficient here and the Whiksy is neither too strong nor does it appear thin. This old bottling is really intensely sweet on the palate, but a nice, ripe sweetness that doesn't look fake.
    • Finish
The mouthfeel is creamy, slightly oily and has sufficient mouth filling for 12 years and 43 percent. The finish is rather short than medium-long, but not just fleeting.

Nice example of worm tub whisky that won’t break the bank. Lots of maltiness with honey and a smattering of orchard fruits. 33 euros.

Nose is quite reasonable and brings nice promise, with some dryness, apples, minerality, grass, honey and raisins. Taste starts with some sweetness and apples, but turns really bitter pretty quick. Finish short, dry and bitter.

very light-fruity like apples and pears, but unfortunately also very expressionless and interchangeable. A bit too spicy in the finish, which is too stark a contrast

Glen Elgin 12 year old 43%. Golden yellow-orange. Aroma is white bread, some iced gems, faintly woody but quite barley-led I'd say, something like simple cheap shampoo and copper, some gummy sweets if you sniff hard, rhubarb soda perhaps. But a lot more straight forward than I am making it sound. Body akin to semi-skimmed milk. Not light and watery, not full and oily - just like semi-skimmed milk. Taste is again quite simple. Very easy on the tongue in every way. Takes a while for the flavour to come out but it immediately gets on your breath. The taste is also barley-led, bready, mild, salted crackers, rusty sort of finish. It would be very easy to drink a lot of this, and there's a lot to be said for that. It's clean, easy and doesn't put a foot wrong but it is also lacking in unique character. 3.4/81

  13. crapachino scored this whisky 84 points Newbie

Full of scent and taste for 12yo. And still very, very affordable! Unexpected and real delight.
    • Nose
      85 85
Apples, apples everywhere. These red cider ones, sweety. Some meadow flowers, heliotrope honey. Really nice!
    • Taste
      84 84
Very sweet and smooth, somehow oily. Apple continues, together with honey and fried almonds. Some accents of caramelized lemon peel. Traces of olive oil, but still very pleasant.
    • Finish
      83 83
Mediocre, much drier than taste and nose, oaky and bitter, roasted almonds continue. Nice contrast to the scent and flavour.

    - a good, solid, strong, honest 12 year whisky
    • Nose
      subtle sherry smell
    • Taste
very aromatic and fruity, sherry a bit noticeable, strong character, you notice the 43%, very mouth-filling, like a warm explosion that spreads over the palate and then quickly disappears
    • Finish
      short finish;
      but long, spicy aftertaste

  15. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Warm and smooth, fruity yet quite dry. Red fruits and (not overwhelming) vanilla flavours for a complex and fully rewarding Speysider.

  18. Der_Schnappulierer scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

A whisky in the "Can be made, but you don't have to" category. Nothing bothers you, but it is also anything but interesting. I could imagine that it is great for refining baked goods;)
    • Nose
      80 80
Caramel, malt, honey, a little pepper
    • Taste
      80 80
Mild, but also a little thin, malty, vanilla, honey. In contrast, it also shows beautiful notes of pepper and spicy oak. Not bad.
    • Finish
      81 81
The finish is short, with beautiful oak and vanilla notes. Enjoyable.

  25. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Interesting whisky, the main player here is certainly aroma, it is he who sets and develops the main theme, the rehash of which, in one way or another, is repeated in taste and aftertaste.
    • Nose
Open, dry, dry herbs, boards, honey-floral shades, a lemon slice in tea, some tart mineral notes - dry plaster, stone dust; sweet candy motifs, freshly cut grass, gouache-like paints, watercolors - not oil; some oil deep-frying shades of textiles - tarpaulin, canvas; subtle tones of plastic and detergents; overall very harmonious.
    • Taste
Powerful, saturated, old wood, old books, varnish, dry herbs, candies, lemon peel, floral-honey notes, some industrial motifs - textiles, oil; tobacco, old leather goods.
    • Finish
Soft, warming, oak, lemon slice in tea, industrial textiles, paints, coated tablets, old leather goods, a little ginger.

    • Nose
Red apple, vanilla notes, fresh wood, sweet pastries, creamy fudge. 21
    • Taste
Medium-bodied, moderately sweet. Slightly watery. Red apple, black pepper, ascorbic acid, woody tannins, malt motifs, lollipops, apricot jam, herbal bitterness, cardboard dust. 21
    • Finish
Between short and medium in length, smoothly decaying, tannic, slightly astringent. twenty
Not very complicated, but tasty and very drinkable whisky, ideal for every day. Balance 21.

  27. Whisky_Addicted scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Nose: linden honey, vanilla, freshly sawn board, seasonal apples, some bitterness.
Taste: watery, bitterness, wood, vanilla, a little honey, green apple, hay.
Finish: short, bitterness again, then a tree, apples, and a little pepper.
Conclusion: simple whisky, sweetness does not prevail. The water simply muffles the aroma, but more bitterness appears in the taste. I would not take another Central Bank.

Perfectly adequate and a quality-level that fits the price. I can't imagine this'll disappoint many.
    • Nose
Notes of caramel and marzipan at first, with a hint of cinnamon as well. A touch of red berries and forest fruits as well. Gentle and friendly stuff.
    • Taste
A sweet initial taste (fudge) with a fairly rich mouthfeel, followed by a spicy arrival (nutmeg, pepper, cardamom) and a whiff of burnt carame
    • Finish
Short to medium in length. Lingering spices. A touch of oak and a faint grassiness.

Glen Elign Distillery is located near the Scottish town of Elgin. The plant was founded at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Distillery mainly makes your distillates available for creating unique blends. One of the best known wines produced, among others, from the Glen Elign distillate is White Horse whisky.

    • Taste
      82 82
The taste is very easy going and mild, dried apricots build up into orange peel. Small bits of cocoa like pleasure at the end of the throat.
    • Finish
      81 81
Lingering cornflakes and honey at the back of the tongue. Medium ending, not too long.

  34. HammerHead scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Notes half way through the bottle some 5 months since opening it:

Nose: red fruit compote, white and milk chocolate, sultana raisins, honey, caramel, mint, slight aniseed and a whiff of cinnamon.

Taste: a light to medium body with dried fruits, clear chocolate, a sligthy bitter wood note and some green herbal spicyness.

Finish: not that long but pleasant with again the dried fruits, cocoa, coffeebitter and a little nutmeg.

A very decent mildly sherried bottling. Actually quite pleasant, but lacking somewhat in depth and complexity. Still available for around the €30 mark in NL, which is good value for money.

Really agreeable, mild and light with the pears, some summer-meadow with the sweet dry hay and wild flowers and a very faint smoke. A bit strong with the e150 and low with the strength but likable and very easy to drink. If you are interested in  something completely different try to get a sample of the Centennary bottling. You would never guess they come from the same distillery.

88 given for a 750 ml bottle imported for Sandiago Chile....

I loved the dusty old school style of this one,  the nice intergration of some fine leather of fruits (lemon ,orange, peach)and of spicies(a looooot of black pepper!!) and the barely traceable hints of wax and smoke

I was positively surprised by this malt. Well worth the money!
    • Nose
Very fruity, with apple and figs, and a touch of hazelnut.
    • Taste
It stays fruity, but now more citrussy notes. In addition pepper and ginger.
    • Finish
Surprisingly long, dry finish with slight bitterness (so that's where the oak has been hiding...)

  70. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

It is a good decent, affordable standard whisky that gives you a certain kind of complexity despite the "lightness" of the dram, It is both easy accessible and demanding at the same time, a bit like the quantum physics thought experiment "Schrodinger's cat". I call this "Schrodinger's dram".

    (Rating interval 81-85)
    • Nose
Fresh floral note initially, subtle spices (cinnamon and powdered ginger), green apple, soft oak, barley sugar, bitter orange marmalade and kiwi fruit.
    • Taste
It is a clean arrival with apple and bitter honey, more spices as it develops on the tongue (black pepper in particular), still apple, pear and very crisp character.
    • Finish
The finish is quite light and grainy (could be a blend in my opinion) with some sour unripe fruit, goose berries or kiwi, mild pepper and diluted apple cider vinegar.

I found this a bit bland for my liking and combined with some notes on the nose that I didn't like (that superglue smell of rushed spirit) means I didn't really like this one too much.
    • Nose
Tile grout, Malt, Christmas pudding, Superglue, Honey, Light Vanilla, lightly toasted wood, Cloves. Over time vanilla gets stronger, develops a buttery smell.
    • Taste
Big wood, Sour Cream , Nutmeg, Toffee, Table Salt. Sour Apple.
    • Finish
Medium, dry oaky finish with some bitter spicy notes developing at the end.

    Aroma: Sherry, spicy-fruity, citrus aromas, traces of marzipan, fruit gums, oranges, chocolate;

    Taste: Sherry, fruity, sweet, vanilla, red fruits, traces of smoke, chocolate, oranges (pimps cake?);

    Finish: medium length with oak and spice, chocolate;
Conclusion: From the heart of the Speyside and yet a little different from the usual 12-year-olds! The first contact was the great aroma quickly gone, let's see how the whisky is still developing.

Nose: Best part of this whisky. Fresh fruits like green apple, fudge, marzipan, nutty, honey, something funky.
Taste: sweet, fruity, young, light, sharp, spicy.
Finish: quite spicy with some fruits mixed into it, mostly more bitter fruits and pepper. There's something stale in the mix too. Like a combo of old coffee and wet old oak - probably the funky part from the nose. Finish is gone quite quickly, leaves a unpleasant bitter flavor.

Not the experience that keeps me getting back for more. The smell suggests much more, so it feels like a dissapointment after every sip. Sub par, but at a reasonable price.

    The nose was very good,
but on the palate and certainly in the finish, it shows why this is considered
    to be entry level.
    • Nose
      The nose is
pleasantly buttery. Let us call it butterscotch. Underneath some raisins and
loads of honey. Vanilla coffe, the one you can get at Starbuck’s. Just a tad
      too sweet. Hazelnuts
      and almonds. Quite nice.
    • Taste
      On the palate,
though, it is somewhat light. Mostly the coffee returns,
followed by some sweet malt, spices and caramel. Fairly little fruit, all of it
      European.
    • Finish
      Mildly drying finish
on more of the same, but rather dry.

a blast, but a nice whisky for every day. Overall, much drier than the official description suggests.
    • Nose
Almond, slightly bitter, citrus fruit (grapefruit), slightly overshadowed by the alcohol, which despite the 43% is relatively present (unfortunately slightly sprittig)
    • Taste
Citrus (orange), slightly peppery, dry, light oak
    • Finish
the dry continues and is already gone. (relatively short finish)

Nose: Fruity ripe pears, rather dry, marzipan, a bit flowery, candied orange skin, tad alcohol

Mouth: tad alcoholic, grassy, very typical speyside

Finish: grassy, short, bit alcohol, rather dry

Comments: Pretty dry which will not be everyone`s cup of tea or whisky. To me it feels a little bit too young.

    Lovely weighty whisky
    • Nose
Hot caramel apple pie with fresh peach on top. Faint wood smoke and a hint of fabric softener amongst cut grass. Water lightens, freshens and gives a little chilli.
    • Taste
Wonderful, rich fat delivery, with heaps of tinned fruits and cream, drizzled with a light toffee sauce. Retains its muscle with water, but fresher and less sweet.
    • Finish
long sweet and gently spicy with light peppercorn returns. A bit more fizy and rather minty with water.

I guess it's true what people say; People's perceptions of whisky changes depending on many factor's; The mood or shape you're in, the food you ate, the weather outside and whether or not you're 100% healthy at that moment. There was a time when I absolutely shattered this whisky in my review, but today it wins my heart. A lovely mix of spice and sweetness, just great for whichever state I'm in now.
    • Nose
Light and gentle. Some very nice sweet notes of honey or vanilla, juicy fruits and fresh flowers. Some wood but not too much, and there's a spoonful of barley. Very Speyside-ish.
    • Taste
Prickly. Some spices turning up now, but very quickly after that nice malty sweetness. This is more vanilla than honey and the juicy fruits have changed into more citrus, zesty ones. The wood still holds back a little but the overall experience isn't bad at all.
    • Finish
And just when I thought it wasn't gonna happen anymore guess who decided to show up; wood. Clearly some nice, young oak in there and together with the sweet barley it makes for a well balanced finish. However, I would have liked it to last a little longer, though.

A well balanced nose with malt, honey and sherry notes in the back a hint of smoke. The sweet honey and sherry notes stays in the palate, indeed a bit rough. With a warming pleasant finish. Maybe not suitable for newcomers.
