[March, 2019] The 1977 vintage of Brora marks a turning point in the history of this fine distillery. Up to that time Brora produced heavily peated malt while from 1978 onwards the peating levels were contantly reduced to the "usual" low Clynelish level. So I always check the 1977 releases if I can find any sign this process already started...

...and again I found no hint of that! This is simply a complex and adorable old Brora of the finest kind that is both very interesting to explore and dangerously quaffable. Hopefully Diageo goes for this profile with the revamped Brora distillery (or even better: vintage 1972!)...
    • Nose
      93 93
The colour is amber and the nose offers the old traditional Brora profile with heavy "dirty" peat aromas. Ooh, how I love this! This is like a walk through the wet summer North Scottish countryside with aromas of freshly cut peat, heather, old byres, sheep dip on the meadows and a distant bonfire. Later shy fruity, honey and autumn floral aromas join in as do waxy and engine oily notes. And many more, find out!
    • Taste
      92 92
The taste is multi-layered on all these fine flavours of the nose plus an interesting salty-maritime touch that I like. Upon chewing it turns sweeter and the smoke gets colder (drying) while a fine earthiness developing. Later waxes and honeys join in. Water unlocks more aromas in the nose and turns the taste sweeter with more waxy-earthy flavours. I like this dram both neat and reduced to about 46% abv.
    • Finish
      92 92
The dram arrives warming on the palate and instantly coats the whole of the mouth. There is a minor astringent feeling of cold metals that I rather like in this setting. The finish is long and adds more fruity flavours that are delicious and it is without any distracting moments.

Context is everything I suppose. Had this in a lineup with Port Ellen 3rd release, and a 1979 Port Ellen 21yr OMC. This one was placed in the lineup blind, but I knew what the other two were.

The winner was PE3 at 92 points and then this Brora at 91. It’s quite nice, but dare I say, it’s not life changing by any means. Certainly not worth the prices it fetches in 2020...but still excellent by today’s standards.. I certainly got little to no peat on this Brora, but keep in mind, it was against 2 Port Ellen’s.
    • Nose
      91 91
Very clean nose, citrusy, soft wax, honey. Nothing that would have been obviously Brora.
    • Taste
      91 91
Very bright on lacquer, fruity - stone fruits, lots of honey. Mouthfeel is good, but almost fizzy. Very alive.
    • Finish
      90 90
Bright, fruity, powerful, ginger powder and honey. Lactic, varnish, cheesecloth.

    With water:

The nose is softer now and the palate has los some peat and gained more fruit but still has a lot of power.

What I call a muscular whisky, very good for sure
    • Nose
This smells like its dirtier than the 21 year 1977 RM, less fruit. The fruit is less pronounced on this one, coastal, farmy, briny notes are all here. I get more peat than the 21 year but then the fruit comes through on fresh pineapple and yellow plum with honeycomb.
    • Taste
This more straightforward than the 21, much more peat than I remember previously. It then settles down with sherbet fizz, crisp peat. yellow plum and also some raspberry but its very slight.
    • Finish
      Long & peaty

Earthy peat, grassy as well. The peat level becomes stronger over time. Full citrus bursting out behind the peat smoke. Wonderful waxiness.
    • Taste

Lemons, with peat smoke and waxiness. Some apples and pears.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium long, the smoke is fainting elegantly.

Nose: чернослив, black leather, humidor, apricot jam(22)
Nose2: in addition freshness and field grass, but some kind of mustiness was founded (23)
Taste: very very soft and rounded with light and gentle hop bitterness (22)
    after taste: very rich and long, the leather is inplace, dried fruits, black papper, tomato juice (25);
Сertainly this is one of the best samples which I have chance to try, very balanced and gentle, unfortunately there is mustiness, but anyway it is very very balanced.
    balance=22; total=91

I could not feel the magic that would allow me to put this whisky score above 90 points.
    Color: Pure Gold
Very oily legs that do not flow down the walls for a long time.
    • Nose
bright, fragrant, floral, baby applesauce, sheepskin, blue cheese, tart (yes yes :) Springbank from Samaroli reminded me
    • Taste
Sweet, juicy, apple marshmallows, better with water: tar + bitterness
    • Finish
      pepper
