Nothing at all like any HP I've ever had and I've had quite a few. If I hadn't seen them pour it from the bottle I would swore I was drinking a well-aged GlenDronach.

Absolutely fantastic nose, by far the best quality of the whisky. Dried fruits and oak dominate; the lack of peat isn't terribly surprising given its age but still a little disappointing.
    • Taste

Fruits again (cherries?), some sweetness from the Oloroso casks. This is where the total lack of peat is the most unfortunate. I know peat diminishes with age but even the 30 year still has a decent amount left. Taste has virtually none of the characteristics of a typical HP you'd expect. If you're thinking this is a more refined 30 or 25 year, it's not. As you can tell, I struggled quite a bit with this; it has wonderful complexity and depth but the difference from what I expected to what I got was tough to overcome. As I said above, it's basically an old GlenDronach.

Very dry, which is surprising considering it's Oloroso; you'd think just from the finish that it was matured in PX. Definitely the least impressive part of the whisky. The finish lingers, but it's not exactly pleasant. The finish is the only time I even got some smoke, but still no peat.

Celebrating Orkney’s Scandinavian heritage, this latest Vintage offers a distinctly Highland Park flavour profile from its maturation in Spanish oak, leading to the classic characteristics of dried fruits, caramel and chocolate, The fourth release of the series, the 1971 Vintage has been created from seventeen casks, specifically chosen by our talented whisky maker, Max McFarlane, for their exceptional character. Coupled with this long-term maturation, the perfect balance has been achieved in its 657 bottles. According to Max; “The casks used to create this vintage have allowed the quality and delicate fragrance of the original new make spirit to shine through without being dominated by the wood notes.” The box illustration for this 1971 Vintage celebrates Orkney’s Scandinavian heritage, inspired specifically by a carving in the Ringerike style on an 11th century weathervane.

    Tasting Notes by Highland Park
    • Nose
Rich, vibrant and extremely well balanced. Fruit cake with raisins, cherry and a hint of almond, fruity sherry notes with a touch of caramel, faint spicy smokiness, with hints of black tea.
    • Taste
Wonderfully long strong feel, chocolate, mango, marzipan and cloves are discovered as the spirit opens up.
    • Finish
Smooth, long and lingering, mouth-watering, spicy with a rich plum aftertaste.
