Whisky Reviews for Mortlach 1959 & 1960 GM

3 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 91.43 points

  1. whiskycuse did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Nose: Very meaty, coffee, dry sherry, lots of wood, toasted bread, maple syrup and forest honey. A powerful start, quite tart, earthy notes, resinous, but also tart fruit, grapefruit, overripe grapes, raisins, nuts and chocolate. Amazing how the aroma is compact and generously complex at the same time. Over time, with some fine vanilla.

Mouth: Strong, spicy, leathery, a lot of wood, dry sherry, very tart, just a subliminal sweetness, reminiscent of maple syrup. Bitter almond, bitter orange, bitter chocolate, roasted nuts and some marzipan.

Finish: Very long, powerful, spicy, woody and slightly bitter.

Conclusion: takes time in the air, but then shows what he is for a powerhouse. The 40 percent by volume is enough here completely. A little sweetness is missing.

    Colour: Very dark amber
Nose: Oxtail soup with oloroso sherry, dried apricots, sultanas, woodland strawberries, just hints of cardamom and minimal smoke.
Palate: Very similar to the nose with addded notes of orange zest and Earl Grey tea. There is very little wood to notice.
Finish: Very long, fruity and slightly dry.
Overall: This outstanding Mortlach is both meaty and very fruity. The flavours are delightful but the low bottling strength makes it slightly watery.
