Nose : Peach, apples, peat. Honey and vanilla. Some earthy notes too.

Mouth : Peppery and very fruity. Oaky and sweet. Custard.

Finish : Medium, mint, pepper, salt.

Tasty and easy drinking. Like sipping a pastry (!). Excellent.

{March, 2017]  Tom, the old ops manager at Tomintoul always explained the correct pronounciation of this distillery with "think of me leaving the shower"  (Tom in towel) and if you ever met this guy it is hard to get this picture out of your head.

Tomintoul is somehow an outsider among all the big Scottish industrial distilleries as it does not belong to one of the big groups and its main market is to produce "copied blends and malts" for the big retail groups all over the world (like Aldi, Carrefour, Sainsburys, Lidl...).  As Tom explained: "You want me to make a Johnny Walker Red Label style blend for you - no problem.  You like a Macallan style single malt?  I can do that for you instantly.  Peated stuff - of course..."

Certainly a nice niche market and for sure a good position to annoy the big guys in the industry.  But as long as the outcome is that good as with this dram Tom need not to worry about the future.

This dram is fat, complex, rounded, sweet and charming - all in one glass.  Hey, what more to say?  Pour a dram, relax and think of Tom leaving the shower...

Nose
Melon and pear mixed in with honey blossom, there is also some buttercream.
Its obviously a sweet one.
Taste
Very smooth and creamy with notes of pineapple and a touch of vanilla and a little banana.
It is also a little drying with some very faint bitter notes coming through. Finally some honey mixed in with fudge.
Finish

Medium finish but ever so smooth.

Comments

Lovely and so easy to drink, this is the sort of bottle you can sit in an armchair with and enjoy for hours.

Nose

The nose is light and very fruity. Ripe peach, pineapple, vanilla fudge, sweet malt and cheese cake! The wood has absolutely not taken control of the spirit, but only enhanced it beautifully with esters. Soft as a baby skin. I hardly notice any peat. Eucalyptus and green tea emerge after some hand warmth.

Taste

On the palate, however, some peat does emerge (or is that smoke from the wood?), as well as some peper. Feisty with a good body. Wonderfully mouth coating. Orange liqueur, tea again, banana, coffee and some prunes. Great.

Finish

The finish lasts on prunes and oranges. I am smacking my lips quite litteraly, if you know what I mean.

Comments

This is what makes me happy. What a discovery! I will immedialely locate a few more Tomintoul samples to get to know this malt even better.
