I would never have bought one as I can't really get by in the smoky world. But he has something. He lets me live. Very well combined when choosing a barrel. Fantastic mix of bourbon and? Sherry? Barrel! Good craft.
Thanks to André for the big sample.
    • Nose
Here is the heart of the matter: peat fog, fresh bacon, sweet, tender smoke from the campfire, wooden stables, horse saddle, always a touch of dark fruit and fine herbs. Ahaa .... Baked apple with a nutty sherry accent. Toffee vanilla. Uhuu, very complex story. In addition, wonderful citrus orange notes. This nose is a poem! Thank you Benriach.
    • Taste
There is a lot in it: oak, light pepper, campfire smoke, figs in fried bacon, fine herbs, a hint of aniseed and always a touch of cinnamon. Slightly bitter and still citrus always sweet! ... of the 25 drams in the balance one of the great ones so far, respect. It should never be empty. Wow.
    • Finish
The seasoning from the wood and the fine peat smoke allow it to fade away for a medium to long time. I'm not a smoke lover, but I still think it's really "delicious". So a must for non-smoky fans too! Everyone should have tried it. This whisky shows how it can work if everything fits!
      Awesome

Powerful yet in a way a delicate malt. Takes water well and develops into many facets that want to be explored. Don't leave open for several years as it diminishes over time losing some expressiveness. Overall great malt, the smoke adds an extra layer.

  6. larswehmeier scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

It is a sample from the 2015 bottling vintage.

A beautifully composed, mature whisky with a wonderfully complex, broken down smoky note.
    • Nose
Very fine smoke reminiscent of a campfire that has already cooled down. An exciting mix of herbs tingles your nose. Unfortunately, I can only recognize and name oregano and possibly some sage, but there are definitely a few more. After the first sip, it is sweeter and more sherry-toned.
    • Taste
Light, liquid and pleasantly oily in the mouth. The smoke is short and greasy. Then he makes room for a great sweetie. Pleasantly dry on the palate. The herbs are back too, but less hearty here, more sweet. Reminds a little of anise.
    • Finish
Long. Fine smoke, spicy herbs, sweet dark chocolate. Comfortably dry.

  7. Vinyllebt scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

Very heavy chocolate, old wood, leather. On the palate it could be a bit more complex, it is almost too monotonous.
    • Nose
      92 92
Grape-nut chocolate. Balsamic vinegar. Forest honey. Apple. Mint. Hay with dried flowers. Lily of the valley. Apricots. Fermented strawberries
    • Taste
      88 88
The heavy aromas of the nose spread. Hardly any smoke. A bit unbalanced and unfortunately also minimally watery. After eight. With 50% I would probably give it over 90 points
    • Finish
      88 88
      Medium length. Slightly astringent woody.

A deliciously smooth dram, one that shows its age. Interesting mix of ashy, smoky peat, classic Benriach fruits (pineapple, apricot), tanins, and herbs. Best sipped quiet and slow. Full bodied and fades with a warming, pleasant glow. Quite elegant.

    Color - Amber
    Tasted Blind on 02/23/2013
    • Nose
      88 88
Peat is not dominant. Stone fruit, caramel and Sherry notes on the nose.
    • Taste
      89 89
The palate is oily, chewy and rich. Notes of guava, Sherry, light peat and spice.
    • Finish
      89 89
Sherry remains on the palate on the finish with chocolate soufflé and pepper. This is a mature dram that is well bodied. This is not a peat bomb so don't expect that. Water is not recommended as it takes away some of the oiliness of the spirit.

Refined. Well integrated the smoke beside the oak and the fruits.
    • Nose
Smoke, bacon, forest fruits, musty basement, marzipan and gerbeaud.
    • Taste
Spicy oak. Wood smoke. Pepper, tobacco, antique leather and ash. Fruits, herbals and cheese.
    • Finish
      Long, creamy, ashy, spicy, fruity.

A really nice Benriach. Elegant but not too lax. Nicely complex and with each sip more intense and spicy. The sweetness of the nose I miss something in the taste but it remains a great malt with which one can deal extensively. Just the spice is excellent as a counterpoint to the fruit and sweetness, great!
Particularly noteworthy is the development through time from the first to the second sip.
    • Nose
Campfire smoke and canned fruits, sherry, raisins, dates, roasted aromas, strong raspberries, plums, blackberries, forest fruit marmalade, very sweet after the nose gets used to the smoke, a little oak in the background, caramel, orange pulp with a lot of "white peel", Toffee, french fries. There is not even a hint of alcohol, honey, apricots fresh from the tree with a few leaves on it, potato, salt, again bursting smoke, followed by sweet sherry, which goes more and more clearly in the jam direction, marzipan, an elegant nose
    • Taste
sweet creamy start, creme brulee, vanilla, caramel, marzipan, sherry, blackberry, milk chocolate, low smoke, some leather, oak notes, orange marmalade, very mild and round, in the second sip more pronounced smoke and a little more pepper spice, more oak, much more intense and sustainable
    • Finish
Milk chocolate, sherry notes, oranges, apricot, black currants, honey, slightly bitter caramel (burnt), a hint of raisins, oak aromas, bitterness, almond, medium with fading smoke and grape seeds.

In the second sip it is drier and the finish is more intense, spicy, longer with leather, spices and woody notes

A very tasty spicy Benriach, oak is on the palate noticeably more present than the fruit flavors, the nose is still a bit above the taste for me - super balanced irresistible fruity yummy - HabenWollenReiz - with the 25s I understand slowly where the good reputation of Ben Riach which I see as unfounded in the Woodfinish
    • Nose
very soft smoke - so reserved - that it could be harsh sherry notes, ripe fragrant dates, very sweet oranges, leather and mild tobacco, with more time in the glass the smoke is more present - it is still heavy, ripe and spicy but more noticeable In addition, there is creamy toffee with vanilla and red berries, then more plums, later apricot jam, cherries, creme brulee, tart shell potato peel .. very complex, very ripe and round - fantastically delicious
    • Taste
sweet - but noticeably less sweet - than the nose suggested, plums, blackberries, sweet blueberries, oak, spicy tingling on the tongue, beautiful intense multi - layered wood notes with a little resin, some sawdust, tree juice, pepper, chili, with the second sip even more intense, a little sweeter even more spicy oak, slight bitterness in the wood notes but enrich, rosemary sharpness, an old oak cabinet wall, orange marmalade with shell, the smoke is barely perceptible on the palate - he is a spice goes on the whole
    • Finish
long, dry, with tingling oak, nutmeg, cinnamon, tobacco, light mint note and very subtle sweetness

    • Taste

I am very happy with this single malt whisky, not from diageo.

I can enjoy myself with one glass for 3 hours and after that keep nosing the glass.  Do not combine this great single malt with any food or cigar or other spirits or wrong friends.

Make sure to use the glencairn glass and leave the whisky in the glass (coat and keep lid on) at least 30 minute before tasting.  No need to add any water, 46% is perfect.  Abviously there is a lot of peat, but in such a perfect balance with the orange peel and wood taste that lasts 15 minutes in your mouth even after a small sip.  Some chocolate notes, nuts and other warm strong tastes make this a fine winter dram.  In summer be careful not to serve above 25 Celsius because many fine subtle flavours will disappear.

Accidentally i got a 21 yo bottle of this Authenticus first and i finished the whole bottle because it had such a good impact.  Then i realised that was limited and i was sentenced to the 25 yo edition.  Fortunately this is even better.  In my taste and opinion.  Also see Ralfy whisky review 360 on youtube.

Excellent presentation, without caramel (e150) and not chillfiltered. 46% and clear glass bottle, age statement. That's all we want!!  (the bottle comes with a nice carton box too)

Nose: Starting very spiced :pepper, Cinnamon and a lot of peppermint gum, sweet peat, leather, moist wood. an interesting mélange of aromas.

Palate: Peppery, spicy cinnamon (That bubblegum I remember from childhood) , earthy peat with spices, anise and Italian spice (Oregano,Basil,Marjoram) . Smoky and sweet. Good body at 46%. It’s like a well roasted chicken breast over coal fire in sweet marinade and Italian spices.

Finish : a whiff of smoke and herbs.

This one differes from the older version in being less sweet , with more herbal feel to it, quite drinkable, and rewarding.

  32. dicembre29 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Nose: Immediately appealing. Sweet old peat, turning to fruits. A beautiful restrained smokiness. A slightly sweet and salty dough note…almost like marzipan actually. Red Dino-saur candies and almost a bubblegum sweetness. Berry scones. Peach, poached pear and soft melon. Faintly floral. A touch of fennel.

Palate: Nice, big delivery. Slightly bittering. Not as soft on the fruits right off, as I’d imagine, but a nice heft of bolder, darker fruit juice instead. Smoke. Tart candy. Maybe cinnamon stick and just really dry wood. A little less than I hoped for, but good.

Thoughts: Better nose than palate, but a treat nevertheless. Would have scored higher if the palate could live up to the olfactory promise. Either way…delightful.

very nice nose and taste, but the best part is the finish, particularly after a few drops of water.
    • Nose
Neat:smoky wood chips, old leather, and cigar ashes. Intense alcohol at 46%. Some camphor. With water a little sherry sweetness comes out.
    • Taste
silky mouthfeel, a light sweetness with some leathery taste. Peppery. Sweeter with water with more cigar ashes.
    • Finish
ashes and smoke, with sweet ashes lingering. Dark fruits (prunes, tart blackberries) remain for a while on the palate, along with more old leather. Gets sweeter, more leathery, and longer with water. There's more spices and a little bitterness too.

Older smokers are not my prey scheme, but the likes - still neat smoke available and the herbal note makes him special, a good substitute for exorbitantly overpriced, older Islays (batch LH30614 2014/06/09)
    • Nose
dry, dried, bitter herbaceous herbs, cold smoke, after a while sweetish smell of stables
    • Taste

    Simply dream stuff.
    90 points.
The little devil on my shoulder asks for a cask strength version to counter-test it against this winner.
    • Nose
It's weird that with every furthermore try (with a new day in between) everything is recognized better and is judged better. Odd combination of tropical sweetness and tropical aroma with strong dried european mountain herbs, peat, smoke and a pile of sh*t in the middle of a cowshed. Irritating at first, the more you get used to it, the more you'll love it.
    • Taste
Again, this one changes with time. Better to drink it neat, but some small drops of water will be okay. I often smiled when I read the distillery notes with that typical BenRiach phrase of "avalanches" of whatever they claimed to identify. With this 25yo. Authenticus it is just right.
The avalanche hits a market stall with fruits and then the neighbouring one with lots of elegant but pungent herbs like basil, a leather belt with some pepper and some german chamomille. Odd, but extremely well composed. You just wish that this avalanche will hit you.
    • Finish
Long. Becomes more and more gentle in the fade.

    Producer`s NotesAPPEARANCE
    Bright, warm amber gold.
    NOSE
    Elegant aromas of ripe

pineapple, fresh mountain herbs and a profusion of sweet peat. A huge

pungent blast of peat smoke emerges, partnering the peated element

    perfectly. Full bodied and audacious.
    PALATE
    A fantastic fusion of

rich peat and smouldering embers bound together by fresh herbs -

oregano, aniseed and chicory in particular. A rush of sweet, wild honey

provides a lovely contrast to this lively, intense expression.
    CONCLUSIONS
Terrific weight and development which leaves a powerful long lasting impression on the palate.

  41. HunterRomario scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Ripping and at the same time very original whisky, where there is no sign of any flatness or boring, on the contrary, it is a flat whisky, where you can discover individual ingredients. Ideal for more festive occasions, this will probably not be whisky for everyday sipping, and that's because of its price. This will be her only inconvenience, compared to the 21st version, the four-year-old, in addition, raised the price twofold.
    • Nose
I was expecting a bruised blow to my nose, and she did not come. Instead, mature fruit, currant jam. Sweet with a touch of mist, peat slightly in the second wave.
    • Taste
I know where the nourishment hid. There is a concert on the tongue, the peat together with the overwhelmed fruit, licorice, sweet spice. Everything is harmonious, full, rich.
