Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 1967 GM

[December, 2017]  It is christmas so it is time to taste a special dram (or two) - and I think this 45 years old Strathisla is a dignified whisky for that occasion.  I had quite several old Strathisla from the sixties before and all were truly excellent so my expectations are high...

The colour is mahogany and the texture shows late fat sticky tears that very, very slowly move downwards.  The nose is rich and complex on an old style sherry profile with dozens of different aromas centered around herbal-spicy-leathery notes with some fruits, beeswax and some OBFs (lacquer paint).  One to both explore in detail and enjoy in general.  The initial mouthfeel is coating and charming with almost no bitter or adstringent moments despite the 45 years in cask.  Really nice and promising.  The taste is much (sherry winey) sweeter than the nose with more fruits and chocolatey flavours that nicely balance the herbs and spices from the wood.  Again no bitter or adstringent moments until the end of the finish (just at the very end a minor cardboardy feeling).  The finish is of medium length and adds liquorice flavours to the profile.  Some water releases even more aromas in the nose but it flattens the taste and finish.  I like it best when neat (actually a higher abv would have been even better, most probably).Another excellent Strathisla from the golden years of this lovely distillery with a great complexity and still of lot of power after 45 years.  There are no signs of over-aging at all, a perfect cask selection out of the huge stocks of Gordon&MacPhail, again...

Another great Strathisla from the late 1960's with a solid sherry and oak. 91/92.

A very nice old sherry malt; round and elegant.
    • Nose
Strathila exudes the aroma of baked apples, plums, ripe banana, herbs and sherry; from forest soil one hour after a late summer rain. A very "full" nose. The more often one smells, the more mature the fruits and the clearer the herbs (thyme, marjoram) come to the fore. A very elegant, initially somewhat reserved nose.
    • Taste
The malt comes pleasantly tingling in the mouth. This welcome sparkle of over thirty-year-old bottlings from the sixties and seventies of the last century is great. In the mouth the Strathisla becomes increasingly sweeter, plummy and earthier. The "Initial Taste", so this first taste impression, is top class.
    • Finish
The finale is warming, as is common with the best sherry malts. Maybe I would have expected a bit more oak, but thyme and marjoram reappear and intensify the dark-earthy aroma.

Excellent stuff the only down side is it is 43% 48-50% this would be awesome but its a lovely sipping whisky, Strathisla as it should be, restrained elegance.
    • Nose
Ripe plum, fig, prune, mocha, a little coffee, red apple skins, Nice nose
    • Taste
Very soft and fruit at the start, there is something creamy about it like rich custard, hints of  vanilaa at the back, Rich dark caramel, milk chocolate, hints of blackcurrant.
    • Finish
Good medium length with the sweet caramel notes lingering.

    A classic Strathisla - great!
    • Nose
Intense, dried fruits, apricots, ripe bananas, hints of toasted bread, toffee, oak wood - typical old Strathisla
    • Taste
Little punchy, oily creamy, liquorice, dried fruits again, prunes, plums, hints of citrus fruits too, nice balance between oak wood and good sweetness
    • Finish
Long and warm, still fruity and not drying

  10. Malt Hans scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Vanilla sweetness, mango, banana, apricot, mint, cinnamon, pepper, burnt almonds and malt. Long, malty and spicy end.
