Water: yes, a few drops of water make the nose even more intense, the oak is very strong and the walnut aroma is more evident and the salt is more and more important

Conclusion: these are sherry boards, as I love them, plus a touch of the old Tobermory character and it's already in Malt-Himmel. Even though he may have got a bit too much oak and the saltiness is a tad too intense, here you have a malt in the glass, behind which the modern sherry tunnels have to hide - 91 Punke
    • Nose
Nose: it starts with a full spread of old Oloroso sherry flavors, especially Asian plum sauce and sweet balsamic vinegar, also figs and dried dates are pouring out of the glass. A decent portion of old and polished leather reminds me of my father's old leather bag. Ripe apricots are added, rounded off with a pinch of salt. And in the background is a very complex spicy note added by the oak tree, which comes mainly with walnuts, nutmeg and some cinnamon. Quite discreetly in the background, a subtle plume of smoke also resonates
    • Taste
Taste: a lot of spicy sherry with neat salt, some smoke and strong oak, dates, plums, wax, and a good portion of cloves and dark chocolate
    • Finish
Finish: medium to long, strong and very intense, becoming bitter in the back. Of course, the sherry dominates here with balsamic and cloves, dark cherries, and cocoa, but also the salt is becoming more intense

Just did a head to head with this from the same series which had less time in the cask

For this older one (39 year compared to 33 year)at almost identical abv was not quite as good having more bitterness and slightly less balance but both good sherry monsters.

With water the nose is more expressive with the fruit notes still evident.

Palate is smother and fruitier and the finish still long and smooth.

I liked this a lot but my gut feeling is that it should have been bottled a few years earlier.

One for the sherry heads that's is for sure and one I recommend to.
    • Nose
Very nice and very rich, balsamic vinegar, plum sauce, rich dark raisins with blackberry and black cherry.

There is a little coffee and some meat notes , beef joint springs to mind.
    • Taste
Thinner on the palate than I expected neat and there is some of that old sherried bitterness still on blackberry and tart blackcurrants mixed in with dark bitter chocolate.

Give it some time and the sweetness does come through, I instantly thought of raspberry at this point and lamb gravy????

Finally some slight peach notes come through.
    • Finish
Long, smooth and very slightly sweet still on fruit and meat notes.

  10. Cicero did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

without ifs and buts: top whisky!
    • Nose
boar, many heavy and juicy dark fruits, quite sweet. The nature of the sherry reminds me a little of the previously tasted Glendronach, wonderful. The first time I clearly smell old leather, a fresh, salty sea breeze blowing through the glass (carried by alcohol?), Witty spice combined with a distant hint of smoke. I can not stop sniffing.
    • Taste
Amazing amount of smoke in the entrance, the nose did not give it. Strong start, but not biting. Immediately the fruits are back. Juicy and sweet. Oak, leather, spiciness. Everything happens together in the mouth. A true firework of flavors. The first sip fades very slowly. The soft smoke is holding, as well as the old leather chair. The second sip. Fireworks. An orange, more like the abrasion of the shell, speaks up. Salt.
    • Finish
At the end then again clearly the barrel and the last remnants of the smoke. Almost 50% alcohol is just right.
