Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old 40%. The aroma is somewhat milky, slight mousy oak, faintest lemon note, furry. Taste is creamy, soft oak, lightly spicy, spicy oak, this is a pretty lacklustre dram. Maybe the word 'lacklustre' is unkind but it's very middle of the road, not displaying much character, seemingly not blended to display any particular distillery character/USP and bottled weak - so that the life has been sucked out. Slightly watery but not insipid. There's spicy oak and light salt and pepper notes, and a soft of pervasive milkiness. It's okay 3.2/77

Lots of hazelnut. Strangely enough, I later had a 5cl miniature that was really good. Here it was too thin and maybe also tipped too quickly.

    - an average 12 year old single malt
    - there are much better 12 year standard whiskys (but also more expensive)
    - but still ok for about 28 €
    • Nose
a malty, sweet sherry aroma, with ripe citrus fruits
    • Taste
sweet, fruity, malty, a little sherry, spice (oak)
    • Finish
      short start and finish,
      one-dimensional and quickly gone

  13. Syleo scored this whisky 74 points Expert Senior

All in all, the very pleasant and surprisingly intense nose with the bitter-floral-spicy taste meets in my personal rating in a not really convincing average for this certainly inexpensive singleton - quite edible, but for my personal taste no representative on the home shelf ...
    • Nose
      83 83
Would this even be a pre-Christmas painting - or a fun fair? It is this aroma of candy canes that rises in the nose the first time you sniff and awakens childhood memories. Vanilla, honey, but also subtle fruitiness combine - honeydew melon, light raisins that have been in the air for a long time and therefore no longer smell very intensely, and then even something spring-like, heather could be.
    • Taste
      69 69
The anticipation raised in this way increases the expectations for the tasting. But on the palate, there is a sharp sting and then dull bitterness. Recovered from this first impression, the melon and some pear notes are also present here.
    • Finish
      71 71
Melon and the pear notes are overtaken by a woody bitterness in the short, sharp finish - is this the impression when you chew on heather? Never tried, but I could imagine it.

  14. Bretorianer scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

Can only be enjoyed in combination with dark sweet drinks. Weak nose that is still the best. On the tongue it has some very unsightly bitter notes. The finish is short and weak. Maybe a little better with a few percent more ...

In addition to spice, nothing at all worth talking about. The smell will go away, but the rest is awful. Now just pray that if one does not receive it as a gift from someone ...
    • Nose
Total odorless smell: malt, nuts, toast, slightly citrus, a little honey, floral scent, and unfortunately I semtam even some of the sharper chills
    • Taste
A fairly flat and watery taste, which is bruised only with a very pronounced spice. Nuts, malt, a little lemon peel, followed by no more pleasant bitterness, such bitter smoky caramel: \
    • Finish
Spicy, with malt undertones, quite warm enough.

  30. Dre73 scored this whisky 73 points Connoisseur

Reasonable full odor, with occasional unpleasant sea air through it, and alcohol prominently.
The taste is also quite full, but is dominated by a sugary sweetness. Complemented with peppery sharpness.
The finish is very short and the flavors disappear quickly.
No dram that I look forward to drinking again, in this price segment is much better.

Some unbalanced whisky, strong smell, taste still present (but sharp and very sweet), finish very short and not much taste anymore.
    • Nose
fruity, citrus, honey. Also comes a strange salty sea air. And alcohol reasonably prominent.
    • Taste
Sharp, peppery. Sweet, sugary. Honey, nuts
    • Finish
      Short, bit bitter, nuts, dry

  32. Shane_IL scored this whisky 72 points Expert Senior

Malts like this are made largely for the blend market and really hold little appeal as a single malt, there are far more interesting things out there at this price point, even as an introductory malt.

Tasted as part of a blind tasting competition and reviewed in my blog: http://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2016/04/04/singleton-of-dufftown-12-blind/#more-558
    • Nose
Sponge cake with vanilla icing. Oranges. Honey. Bit of a coconut note. Mild citrus flowers. Stewed fruits. Light woodspice.
    • Taste
Woodspice. Quite bland. Mild stewed fruits and some bitter wood.
    • Finish
Medium. Spice and a little soap. Dry woodiness.

  33. ottos scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

Ok entry level malt, reminded me a bit of Glenlivet 12.
    • Nose
Apples, hay, a slightly nutty feeling, bit of fudge
    • Taste
As Serge says: café latte! Quite a milky feel, some more apples, grass, butter, pretty smooth and rounded
    • Finish
Short and a bit thin, although not unpleasant.

a very good all-round introductory malt,

I don't spit in the glass when served a Glenlivet 12, and I think this is a close comparison
    • Nose
malt, roasted nuts, vanilla bisquits, red apples, some citrus

left to breath for a while some pleasant floral grassy notes apear
    • Taste
sweet and light, caramel apples with oily walnuts,
    • Finish
apart from a slight spicyness there is no major development on the finish, very simple but pleasing

  37. domani scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

A simple knit but surprisingly good single malt with a very good price-performance ratio. Ideal for in between - 14.12.2013
    • Nose
Intrusive alcohol note that escapes quickly, malt, sweetness, nuts, marzipan, apple, lime, candied fruit
    • Taste
      Malty, sweet, syrupy, nutty
    • Finish
      Short

  38. Dris scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Wonderfully nutty expression. Viscous oily body, with a few heavy flavours like damp wood. At the palate unripe walnuts and some grassiness. Sour apricot seed, raisins. Very oily, but less flavoursome finish.
I wouldn't consider this as an introductory malt...

For the price, I must say that this is an honest single malt. Better than most of the blends in the same price range
    • Nose
Fudge and green fruits, apple and pears, not very complex but pleasant
    • Taste
Apple and pears. Not weak at 40%, a bit dry. The body is a little hard and dry.
    • Finish
Short, does not bring something else than the original taste.

Good value for money. Amazingly dark and full flavors, only the bitterness takes some getting used to. However, at forty percent by volume, it is already watery enough.
    • Nose
Dried dates are ubiquitous, with raisins and polished wood or hazelnut syrup, light spicy notes of nutmeg and cinnamon that set an interesting counterpoint, brown sugar, a hint of caramel, in contrast to a freshness reminiscent of Irish blend, minimal smoke
    • Taste
soft with caramel, intense dried dates balance with coffee and dark chocolate, dark fruit and dry on the palate, spicy spiciness, behind with a heavy sugar syrupy sweetness
    • Finish
soft and soft, strong coffee with hints of dark chocolate, slightly dry, medium-short, hazelnuts, minimal oak, later raisins and an unpleasant bitterness, minutes later remains dried dates

Singleton is a brand dismissed in aficionado circles, and referred to as "the Simpleton". But what if it was designed to be just that?

Singleton of Dufftown 12 does the gateway job pretty decently!

The whisky is not bad, but unfortunately much too lax. A higher alcohol content would have been good for the drop. Good to introduce newcomers, who previously could not do anything with whisky, into the world of single malts. However, anyone who has enjoyed one or two drams will soon be bored with singleton 12.
    • Nose
Pretty fresh. Lemon candy, butterscotch, oranges. Behind them malt and nuts.
    • Taste
Very watery, there are not many flavors left in the mouth. Some malt. A light fruitiness.
    • Finish
Short and mild. Some malt. Caramel. Toward the end becoming sour.

Taste: Predominantly sweet flavours of caramel and vanilla. Some liquorice. A touch of mint.

This is one of the whiskies I started with and I still think it's a good bang for your buck. I prefer this one now as a good apetiser to get my tastes sharp. It's a very accessible whisky for everyone I think because of it's fruity and sweet character.

this is also a whisky I share with people that like to have a whisky but can't really appreciate the better and more expensive drams.

Not so bad finally, for a whisky around 20-25 €. It is obviously not very complex and very easy. Almost no content in the finish and on the palate. But the hand of apple juice is original and pleasant, for someone who would seek to start in the world of whisky very very slowly.
    • Nose
Background of blind tasting ... A killing or a trap in which I will fall roughly?
Houla, it's alcoholic. After aeration, we find a lot of apple juice, cereals and honey.
    • Taste
Sweet and very sweet, with caramel and still apple. She is very slightly fat. It is greedy but not very complex.

    • Taste
but then everything is blocked by a diffuse molasses ...
    • Finish
which becomes bitter in the finish (underlined by sweet honey, after all) and is then replaced by caramelized cough syrup ... Huh, what is that?

Well, what can I say..... I think this whisky will do as an aperitif but if you want to keep your friends, don't offer them this whisky to often....
    • Nose
Malty. Raisins and a hint of vanilla and butterscotch. Also oak. Not very impressive.
    • Taste
Malt and pepper. After that vanilla and some liquorice. Better than the nose but still not very impressive.
    • Finish
At the beginning peppery. After that a bit sweetness and at the end spicy and a little bitter. Short.

Rich, fruity and sweet nose. Water brings out more complexity and lovely aromas of roasted nuts. The palate is a bit bland if I`m honest, although it remains warming and smooth. Nothing earth-shattering but equally nothing out of place. Would likely benefit if bottled higher than 40%.

    • Taste
A hint of licorice now, lightly peppered. Quite some malt, slight vanilla.
    • Finish
Not much here, except some light citrus, vanilla and mostly malt.

This malt is clearly made from a mixeture of European oak and American oak where's European dominates. A lovely Speyside dram, nice to enjoy at late Summer evenings or early Autumn days. Enjoy this with some chees or nuts.
    • Nose
Pure: friendly and sweet, estery , ethyl acteate, octyl acetate, acethyle aldehyde and nicely diacetyl. (reduced: gentle, flowery, benzyl actetate, actetyl aldehyde, soem diacetyl and estery - citrus fruity)
    • Taste
Pure: sweet slightly bitter, pungy, diacetyl flavors, some sweetness with eugenol spices. (reduced: mild, gentle, lovely, diacetyl combined with some acetic acid and acetylaldehyde)
    • Finish
Pure: Spices - eugenol, some diacetyl and warming, medium length. (reduced: Gentle, warming a mixture of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde)

This whisky is somewhere halfway between a simple blend and a single malt, which does not mean it's bad. Without bitter bitterness, she would reach eighty.
    • Nose
Lighter, not very complex. Honey-malt, peppery smell.
    • Taste
Taste reflects what we find in the smell. A bit of honey, a pinch of flesh, but still a high dose of woodiness, which slides in bitterness and into bitterness, and a bit of a trace of impression.

In the nose, pleasant, not pushy. Nutty, bitter-sweet in the nose. A nutty sweetness accompanied by bitter herbs plays around the tongue. A middle dry finish with some linseed oil.

No positive surprise. More years in the barrel and more vol%, then this malt could find its way into my glass again.

A suprising whisky. Make sure you add water, essential to the taste of this dram. Add water and an explosion of vapours happens.
