Youthfulness is actually not a problem for Kilchoman - but unfortunately he remains too one-dimensional and smoky here.
    • Nose
      83 83
Warm tin roof, raisins, grapes. Youthfulness flashes through: green branches, grass, green apple. Strong peat smoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
Starts with a substantial helping of smoke on the tongue. Dry, woody, slightly tart. Herbal stock, dried dates, whole milk chocolate.
    • Finish
      83 83
The peat smoke note remains for a long time, otherwise it quickly fades ...

"I've noticed that it changes amazingly quickly as the bottle goes down. ... Reminds me of Anhainn Dearg fairly enough."

[from a bottle that had been open for a long time] Barbecue chips spice mix. Not as rubbery anymore as I'd been led to believe but it doesn't seem particularly complex nor is there any development noticeable probably due to having been open a long time already. The body is quite light. Heavy in peat but rather watery. This is pretty nice but I think I liked the bourbon sc I had before this more since the sherry here could have used some more time to integrate into the make better. There's just one thing happening here all the time so it gets a bit tiring.

Well, in comparison to the finished versions, where the metallic (probably from the still young pot stills) next to the herausziselierten other flavor components made the special charm of the Kilchoman drops, I like here the combination of animal-metallic taste in combination less well with the somewhat diffuse jelly. At Machir Bay 2013 I criticized the lack of sherry casks, here the sherry is a bit too dominant. This is less a smoked whisky than a smoked sherry!
    • Nose
Campfire, spicy, fruity, but also something of a jute sack that has become wet with seawater.
    • Taste
And now a metallic off-taste begins to fumble with a somewhat syrupy / honey-like mass, underpinned by some citrus fruit.
    • Finish
The campfire-like and at the same time the metallic crowd for a moment in the foreground, then the molasses struggles again, accompanied by light vanilla and citrus fruits, then comes back to the metallic. With some goodwill, the finish can be described as medium long.

Taken from bottle label, Dr. James Swan - Whisky Consultant
    • Nose
      Color: Rich golden.

Soft peaty aromas and a blend of soft fruits and spice.
    • Taste
An initial sweetness is followed by soft peaty aromas, mixed fruits and spice.
    • Finish
Long and clean with a character and richness that belies its tender age.

    • Nose
This heavy aromatic peat is similar to young Ardbeg whiskys. Sherry-Sweetness and some fruits, but the peat is dominant
    • Taste
Sweetness, very fruity, pears, apricots, ripe oranges, sweet spices like cinnamon, maybe some tobacco notes
    • Finish
Long, peat level decreases, sweetness remains

    • Taste
peat, sand, bright wood, oily, some sherry & citrus sweetness (85)
    • Finish
      more peat, spices, cigar/tobacco (85)

Nose: Peat, rather sweet sherry, peat sweetness, tad smoke, a bit solvent`ish, "young", something rubber and sulphur

    Mouth: sherry, peat, fir tree

Finish: Again some "young" flavor / solvent, peat, nutty, medium long, towards the end sherry

Comments: This one doesn`t really work for me on a high level. It just seems off on several levels. Decent but I expected more here.

As expected of Kilchoman, this is a great dram, nice peaty, straightforward, clear and lots of taste. A real Islay style.
