The HP18 is a finely balanced malt with lots of details - it does not clink with its aromas, everything wants to be discovered. How beautiful could he be first with 3% more ... Yummy! ... and clearly the smokiest from the standard range (12, 18, 21, 25, 30)
    • Nose
very clear maritime airy nose, fragrant sweet hay, sun-warmed chamomile flowers, sweet herbs, heather, white honey, clear apples, orange, lemon, mango, fine smoke of an outgoing meadow fire, after a while milk chocolate and strawberries
    • Taste
oily-sweetish, monstrous medium-strong smoke, very clear, mineral, a lot of pink grapefruit, very tangy in the mouth, clear apples, mango, clover sweetness and sweet chamomile, lime blossom tea, dark chocolate, ginger, white pepper; Smoke and pepper warm and fill the mouth
    • Finish
medium-length, clear and fine, something of everything, the flowery (clover) notes stay long, the pink grapefruit and the apple and mango sweetness, as well as the fine smoke of fresh Kokelndem grass fire ... beautiful!

Highland Park's excessive abuse of the Nordic mythology is really putting me off. However, let's review the old HP18, not the Edrington marketing dept. Very dense and round, the nose unfolds with orange peel, creamy toffee and subtle peat smoke. Apricots, heather honey and cloves emerge from the back. After a sweet and sour arrival, the palate develops with a complex array of flavors. Dried fruits, spices and oak take turns with ginger, mint and hints of coffee. Slightly dry and ashy, the medium finish fades. This great malt doesn't need any Viking BS!

After the overall picture, I no longer believe in smoke. An interesting malt that suits my personal taste. Very easy to drink despite all the peculiarities.

Notes from a blind online chat tasting.

OK, so smoke. Supple and easy to drink, but the sherry casks must have been drained.

An elegant, slightly acidic fresh fruit determines the first breath, plus light smoke? The acidity goes down quickly and there is a slight graininess, traces of vanilla. After a while, a rich, well-integrated bourbon cask nose, vanilla, dark caramel, roasted cereals and ripe yellow fruits appear, still with a slight acidity, mirabelles and gooseberries. Warms up pears first, later some cow dung, fermentation notes, interesting and still pleasant, but also clearly acidic. Nothing is straightforward anymore. There also seems to be a little sulfur, which would speak against pure bourbon barrel ripening.

Very spicy start with little sweetness at first, this comes with a delay along with the alcohol before the oak strikes back with a clear espresso. The mouthfeel is dense but rather fluid, there is a slight tingling, ginger. In the second sip a bit tart at the beginning, with a little sugar water.

The finish is oak-heavy and dries massively. A subtle sweetness remains only subliminally. Overall medium length.

Nose: Difficult to take apart, a burned down earthy note, some vanilla and some orange as well as orange peel, blood orange, slightly burnt caramel and many herbs. Sherry flavors, if any, are very reserved and have not occurred to me yet. A slight bittersweet chocolate note I mean to hear and generally a good to hear acid is persistent to feel. Taste: Subtle sweet with a minimal vanilla, soft with only a very slight tingle. Again, a burnt caramel and an earthy / smoky note can be felt. The sweetness remains and something like apple and light grapes come to my mind, but also the herbaceous aroma front paves the way to my taste buds. In the mouth, I rather think of sherry barrels, if only proportionately low. A bit of bittersweet chocolate, lots of herbs and some blood orange and orange shades make the finish. Real bitterness is not to be found, but the grades he has to offer are interesting. Conclusion: Slightly more vol.% Alcohol would certainly be good for the malt. He does not mess with his flavors and his current price will be responsible for not getting me a bottle.

Very tasty, rarely so elegant smoke experienced, very nice mix of some directions.
    • Nose
Very warm, aromatic, pickled raisins, ripe peach, jam bread, cakes & hints mango / exotic
    • Taste
Peat, some smoke and salt, but all very elegant in the sherry, berries, orange marmalade, some inger anise
    • Finish
Medium to long, soft, round, delicious, apple and orange stay on the tongue

  7. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Having drunk 2 or 3 times a long time ago never impressed me as much as he was praised. And even now - yes, delicious, but the current 90-100 € he would not personally worth it, because I found the directly before tasted 12er almost interesting.
    • Nose
a little sherry, some dry smoke, mainly spicy, cardamom, cinnamon ... a drop of water still tickles fresh hay and some citrus fruit
    • Taste
creamy chocolate, pepper, some salt, moderate, ashen smoke, in between fruit, associations with wine gum and grapefruit
    • Finish
medium length, chocolate, mild peppery, some ashes and grapefruit bitterness

Nose: a small amount of smoke, some saltyness, caramel, honey, oranges and woodspices like nutmeg and a little pepper.
Taste: very full, oranges, spicy (pepper) and nutty. Also a bit too dry tasting as far as I'm concerned.
A long (and too dry) finish which is nutty and spicy and very heavy on wood notes.

    Color: deep gold

HP, 18 years old, can not be bad, just too much wood for my taste. 88 points.
    • Nose
Slightly resinous at first, a hint of smoke. Quite dry, dusty table top, cloves, dried oranges. Soot candles, acacia honey. Pine needles and rotten wood. Some furniture polish.
    • Taste
Bitter-sooty, bitter orange jam, liquorice, malt and earthy smoke, black bread, linden blossom. Dry bark, crab apples.
    • Finish
      Long. Dry wood, resin, soot.
