Great part, but does it stack up against the 18 Talisker? Is vlt also a bad comparison (except in terms of price). Or against an 18 Bowmore!? If sherry and smoke.
I really liked the HP here!
    • Nose
      88 88
Delicious shery fruity, with a pleasant smoky note. I don't really notice the typical HP heather.
    • Taste
      89 89
Kind of thin and pungent in the mouth at first, but when the malt is given a decent amount of time to breathe, it becomes nicely viscous and aromatic.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is rather restrained and short. Here I would criticize the alcohol content for the first time. Otherwise it is well balanced. The barrel did a good job. Pretty old school I think.

    Alcohol: 43%
Aroma: Pleasantly polished wood drenched in honey, dried meadow flowers, cake with crumbs, clay, rotten wood, baked apples, heath, orange, cloves. Rich scent, I enjoy it a lot. (88 b)
Taste: Malty, with fine peat and a sour trace, but the body is surprisingly thin and watery. Sulfur peeks out in the aftertaste, but fortunately it just emerged and disappeared again. Windy aftertaste, fruity and slightly woody. (84 b)
    Points: 86/100
Summary: Sample imported from WF2021 in Malá Morávka. An interesting piece, unfortunately with a large disparity between a great aroma and a weaker taste.

Nutty and fruity on the nose of apricots / oranges and hay. No smoke compared to the 12.

Slightly salty, fruity and slightly smoky in the mouth. Overall - and especially in comparison to the 12 - round and full.

In the finish again slightly smoky (less than the 12), dark chocolate and blood orange. Overall a bit "darker" than the 12th.

Nice malt and logical improvement of the 12 year old but with a worse PLV.

    Note 1-

Subtle aromas, heather, honey, subtle sherry influence. After standing for a long time, you can feel a slight amount of smoke. Quite a long finish, with fine flavor, not bitter, very pleasant and balanced.

On a good day 88p. Vey well-balanced and elegant dram. Suffers from borderline acceptable abv. for reaching a good chunk of its potential but would really great at 50%. Btw. the modern travel retail 18 Viking Pride @46% abv. can't deliver on this promise as the overall balance and elegance is out of whack. I reckon this also goes for the normal new 18 in the wildly embossed bottle, unfortunately.

After the overall picture, I no longer believe in smoke. An interesting malt that suits my personal taste. Very easy to drink despite all the peculiarities.

Notes from a blind online chat tasting.

OK, so smoke. Supple and easy to drink, but the sherry casks must have been drained.
    • Nose
      87 87
An elegant, slightly acidic fresh fruit determines the first breath, plus light smoke? The acidity goes down quickly and there is a slight graininess, traces of vanilla. After a while, a rich, well-integrated bourbon cask nose, vanilla, dark caramel, roasted cereals and ripe yellow fruits appear, still with a slight acidity, mirabelles and gooseberries. Warms up pears first, later some cow dung, fermentation notes, interesting and still pleasant, but also clearly acidic. Nothing is straightforward anymore. There also seems to be a little sulfur, which would speak against pure bourbon barrel ripening.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very spicy start with little sweetness at first, this comes with a delay along with the alcohol before the oak strikes back with a clear espresso. The mouthfeel is dense but rather fluid, there is a slight tingling, ginger. In the second sip a bit tart at the beginning, with a little sugar water.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is oak-heavy and dries massively. A subtle sweetness remains only subliminally. Overall medium length.

    Color: deep gold

HP, 18 years old, can not be bad, just too much wood for my taste. 88 points.
    • Nose
Slightly resinous at first, a hint of smoke. Quite dry, dusty table top, cloves, dried oranges. Soot candles, acacia honey. Pine needles and rotten wood. Some furniture polish.
    • Taste
Bitter-sooty, bitter orange jam, liquorice, malt and earthy smoke, black bread, linden blossom. Dry bark, crab apples.
    • Finish
      Long. Dry wood, resin, soot.

Let stand your legitimate 15-20 minutes in the core ...
Aroma: identical to 2008, but more varnished ... But this varnish is delicate and edible ...
Cream, sherry, sweet smoke, nut chocolate mass, waffles ... Tea with lemon balm ...
Taste: sweet and at the same time peppered ... Reminds marinade for poultry or fish: soy sauce + a mixture of peppers, creamy, buttery and smoked ... Cool!
Finish: long, warm and pleasant ... caramel with black pepper ...

  24. Pyromann scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Heavier, delicate, balanced whisky. Due to the price now (10/2019 - 100 EUR), the price / performance ratio is out of the bowl. It is basically a very good whisky, but despite all that nothing deviates from the line and unfortunately not even extra. Still very good.
    • Nose
Heavier, full of fragrance. Apples, a little sweetness after honey, complex, no alcohol or sharpness, nicely polished.
    • Taste
Dense, delicate, balanced. Sweet woody, sweetness after sherry.
    • Finish
Sweeter, but spicy, after woody, medium length.

A balanced highland park located in the lighter aroma spectrum. Unfortunately, something is lacking in strength. Nevertheless, you can deal with it for a while and also find unexpected grades.
    • Nose
      87 87
Butterscotch, honey, some vanilla, delicate smoke, orange peel, yuzu, mint, summer meadow
    • Taste
      87 87
Vanilla pod, yellow apple, blood orange, mangosteen, mint, cumin
    • Finish
      86 86
Short-medium length, dry, blossom honey, delicate smoke, mint, some orange peel

  27. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 89 points Super Administrator

Highland Park's excessive abuse of the Nordic mythology is really putting me off. However, let's review the old HP18, not the Edrington marketing dept. Very dense and round, the nose unfolds with orange peel, creamy toffee and subtle peat smoke. Apricots, heather honey and cloves emerge from the back. After a sweet and sour arrival, the palate develops with a complex array of flavors. Dried fruits, spices and oak take turns with ginger, mint and hints of coffee. Slightly dry and ashy, the medium finish fades. This great malt doesn't need any Viking BS!

The Highland Park 18 is for me something like the egg legend Wollmilchsau, a rather soft, tasty whisky with beautiful malty notes, with noticeable, but not dominating smoke and a great sweetness and lethargy from the sherry casks. You notice the age without the oak becoming too dominant. Strong, spicy, dense, always something to discover without being exhausting. I just like that.

  29. craide scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Great HP, the floral notes go well with the sweetness. Alcohol content fits in my eyes well. Beautiful balanced whisky with light bitter notes at the end.
    • Nose
      87 87
Clearly recognizable maritime nose, very slightly salty, fresh hay, grass, beautiful floral note like a fresh summer meadow, a few herbs to some honey sweetness. Green apples, lemon, fine smoke with a nice hint of chocolate
    • Taste
      88 88
Very pleasant mouthfeel with a slightly oily character, as well as slightly salty with sweet malt. Then nuts, vanilla. Smoke is a bit stronger for me on the palate than in the nose. The fruits are also good.
    • Finish
      86 86
something short for me again. Fruit fades quickly, the smoke stays a little longer. At the back, I still feel a slight bitterness, of coffee or dark chocolate, but is not really long, I could say it exactly.

  30. EnjoyLife89 scored this whisky 95 points Expert Senior

Wonderfully complex and balanced. For me, this malt is well balanced and delicious. The balance of aroma, flavor and smoke is just very consistent.
    Tastes really good!
    • Nose
Sweet; malty; Sherry; In the "empty" glass I also had a nice subtle smoky note, which I initially did not taste at all.
In Blenders' glass, I also have a nice oak note, which I did not have at Glencairn at all. Same applies to a beautiful, tender heather note and a subtle, fresh herbal note, which I have only in Blenders' glass. The sherry note is also much more pronounced in the Blenders' glass and it shows a small spice note
    • Taste
Sweet first, then a nice spice. Then he is briefly slightly sharp and tingling. It shows a distinct sherry note, a beautiful round oak and a soft malt note. This is accompanied by a light, subtle and dry smoke, which blends in beautifully and does not blend in with any of the other flavors. Later comes a little touch of citrus and a nice nut.
    • Finish
The finish is long. Sweet at first, then comes the smoke slowly and discreetly. A clear oak shows up, which lingers in the mouth for a very long time. It shows again briefly but clearly recognizable the herbs from the aroma, followed by a hint of citrus and then an uplifting, distinct Nussigkeit. Even a malt note is clearly visible to me. In between, there is always a spicy mix (I would say cinnamon)

    • Finish

Set malt, very complex everything involved, you should take your time - unfortunately quite expensive - still recommendation

Spicy oak, maritime, balanced and a good dose of smoke, orange peel. Comes almost like a jump bench over. Great whisky.

One thing in advance: Now you can get it for less than 100EUR and that's where it belongs. A wonderful standard that should not be missing on any shelf. In my early days it completely blew me away. But today it is clear that he can no longer score that high with me. But house whisky anyway.
    • Nose
He starts off with sweet oak, light smoke, sweet nuts and very fruity with oranges and peaches. It takes and time only makes it better. Balanced and lovely, it promises bananas and mild honey on the nose.
    • Taste
Salty sweet malt with caramel and brown sugar. Very good mouthfeel with a supple, oily body at a high level, it lets the muscles play. Is it almonds or hazelnuts is not clear, but the interaction of everything makes the experience! Well done.
    • Finish
Rather long and wonderfully complex. The oak stays unexpectedly sweet on the palate without becoming woody or bitter. Great finish. It glides off the stage very warmly and smoothly! There is joy. Refilling is the order of the day.

    • Nose
First the smell like standing in a flower meadow and blowing a light breeze. After that, citrus. Then it gets sweeter and I smell my peach ice tea. Well, Waldhoning. Now the sherry comes through and brings raisins into play. Maybe some oak. All carried by the subtle Highland Park smokiness.
    • Taste
Much darker in the mouth and the barrel makes itself felt. Chocolate. Apricot jam. Again the forest honey. Burnt orange peel. The smokiness is now stronger than before in the nose. The oak is also noticeable and brings spice.
    • Finish
Orange peel. The chocolate darkens and it gets drier. The smoke is easy to feel.

    Rating: 90.

    Highland Park 18-year @43%

This is a heavy hitter. Very rich and nicely complex if you can wade past the sherry.
    • Nose
Musty sherry dominates, with honey, malt, and some fairly prominent smoke. Then artificial cherry flavoring and bourbon freshness appears with sweet vanilla and pears. In the background, berries, orange peel, and chocolate. Huzzah!
    • Taste
Heavy and muscular. Dry sherry. Effervescent. Spices, honey and beeswax, and delicate syrupy sweetness at the back of the tongue, turning into wet tobacco.
    • Finish
Dry, tannins, molasses, faint smoke, salted chocolate, and cinnamon. Yo!

A good dram that unites all. It got the fresh and fruitiness with a richness. Some sherry, some peat, some malt, some of everything. However that's what also bothering me and the low strenght.
    • Nose
Quite fruity and a lovely full bodied sweetness. Lot's of honey and fudge. Oranges and apples. Besides this easy entry, there is a malty core with grassy notes, even heather. A slight peaty or burned wood on the background.
    • Taste
Very soft and easy to drink. Still honeyed sweetness with a more spicy body.  However the body is too weak to last a big impression. The peat also doesn't make it bolder.
    • Finish
Becomes a bit drier, but still sweet.

Good and balanced 18's of Highland Park. I think he was a little stronger, I think. I think it's a very suitable candidate for adding new whisky drinkers, maybe in a tasting session with GlenDronach Allardice and one or two Auchentoshan and a GlenFarclas 18. I do not know why, but I think that might work very well.
    • Nose
Sweet chamomile tea, orange, vanilla, marguerite flowers

This is the result of an HP tasting yesterday:-

     1st -highland-park-30-year-old 48.1%

    2nd - highland-park-30-year-old 45.7%

    3rd highland-park-25-year-old 48.1%

    4th - highland-park-25-year-old 45.7%

    5th - highland-park-18-year-old 43%

    6th - highland-park-21-year-old 47.5%

The 30 year 48.1% is the best but there is little between the 25 year and 30 year offerings.   The 18 year is good and better value than the 21 year.

I remember the first time I tasted the new flat bottle 18 and was blown away by it. The last time I purchased this was from Holland when it was about 60 euro maybe 3-4 years ago, that was a bargain.

Sadly this is up to £130 in the UK now and not worth it.

Yes, still the quality dram it always has been, a more complex profile would get it over 90 points but seriously as a sipping/quaffing whisky what`s not too like?
    • Nose
Sweet peat, caramel, honey, yes the heather note is there I think?

The honey note seems to grow and there is just a hint of orange.
    • Taste
Smooth, sweet and more peat than the nose hinted at, there is blackberry, raspberry, kits all very jammy and very nice.

      Well balanced
    • Finish
      Good medium length, no burn,

At 43 %, this automatically falls to the entry level category, but with reasonable quality. Serious whisky seekers should look for better candidate from the older and stronger end of the HP range. Can't find many different aspects to this whisky without risking dilution. It's a mild whisky overall. Ashy peat combined with fresh, slightly citric, pear. That recipe works until you pick up a stronger whisky.
    • Nose
Seems complex. Hard to distinct the scents. By just opening the bottle, the air is filled with peat. The nose overall has a fresh forefront, pear is a strong element. There's also a faint scent of some cooked meat, like ham.
    • Taste
Too mild to be a top whisky. The alcohol, 43 %, doesn't give much of a kick here. The peat isn't overpowering either. Some oh so common citrics can be found in the whisky, aswell as pepper. But also some sweeter fruits. Hints of salty liquorice. I'm afraid of diluting this with too much water.
    • Finish
The peat leaves a mild burning sensation in the mouth for a while, that is quite pleasant actually. The citrics leave next to no sour taste in the mouth, and that is a welcome quality. Somehow, there's also a faint whiff of chocolate.

The nose is really interesting and saves the whisky at 80.
    • Nose
Delicately smoky, delicate sherry influence. Delicate oak. Generally .... a delicate nose.
    • Taste
It is the same in taste. Unfortunately, I would not say tender, but flat. Hardly any smoke. The smoke disappears at the latest with the second sip. Slightly fruity, slightly spicy.
    • Finish
      Medium.

A woody / fruity whisky to perfection, not to be missed under any circumstances.
    • Nose
The nose is woody, floral and fruity, dried fruits, honey, and a light peat. Some notes of tobacco that finish the broad spectrum of a complex and very pleasant nose.
    • Taste
The palate is creamy, and fruity, orange, grapes, heather honey.
    • Finish
The finish is medium-long, always floral, honey and a touch of smoke, a real sweetness.

The emptier the bottle became, the more I could appreciate this one. But nonetheless I wouldn’t buy this one again for the recent prices.
    • Nose
Smooth and creamy, oranges, a whiff of smoke, wood, plums, subtle sherrynotes, some dried fruits, figs, raisins, floral notes, honey, caramel, ginger, some cigar box, leather and peach.
    • Taste
A little pepper, fruity, sweet. Oranges, some creamy peaches. Then some bitter notes, coffee, caramel and the some raisins.
    • Finish
Medium length, sweet and fruity, oranges and some peach. Then a slight bitter note, coffee, nutmeg and lemon.

reminds me with the pineapple note and the herbs something of something to Ben Nevis 10 but remains behind it - otherwise rather disappointing from the PLV
    • Nose
Bourbon tartaric acid, lemon, mango, honey, rubber tires, iodine, seaweed, broth, mineral, slightly cheesy oak: generally oily, creamy but restrained to thin
    • Taste
slightly spicy, mint, citrus, tart, minerally tart, citrus zests, grapes, white gummy bears (canned pineapple), various herbs
    • Finish
      dry, mineral, lemony, somehow thin

Nose: Difficult to take apart, a burned down earthy note, some vanilla and some orange as well as orange peel, blood orange, slightly burnt caramel and many herbs. Sherry flavors, if any, are very reserved and have not occurred to me yet. A slight bittersweet chocolate note I mean to hear and generally a good to hear acid is persistent to feel. Taste: Subtle sweet with a minimal vanilla, soft with only a very slight tingle. Again, a burnt caramel and an earthy / smoky note can be felt. The sweetness remains and something like apple and light grapes come to my mind, but also the herbaceous aroma front paves the way to my taste buds. In the mouth, I rather think of sherry barrels, if only proportionately low. A bit of bittersweet chocolate, lots of herbs and some blood orange and orange shades make the finish. Real bitterness is not to be found, but the grades he has to offer are interesting. Conclusion: Slightly more vol.% Alcohol would certainly be good for the malt. He does not mess with his flavors and his current price will be responsible for not getting me a bottle.

The HP18 is a finely balanced malt with lots of details - it does not clink with its aromas, everything wants to be discovered. How beautiful could he be first with 3% more ... Yummy! ... and clearly the smokiest from the standard range (12, 18, 21, 25, 30)
    • Nose
very clear maritime airy nose, fragrant sweet hay, sun-warmed chamomile flowers, sweet herbs, heather, white honey, clear apples, orange, lemon, mango, fine smoke of an outgoing meadow fire, after a while milk chocolate and strawberries
    • Taste
oily-sweetish, monstrous medium-strong smoke, very clear, mineral, a lot of pink grapefruit, very tangy in the mouth, clear apples, mango, clover sweetness and sweet chamomile, lime blossom tea, dark chocolate, ginger, white pepper; Smoke and pepper warm and fill the mouth
    • Finish
medium-length, clear and fine, something of everything, the flowery (clover) notes stay long, the pink grapefruit and the apple and mango sweetness, as well as the fine smoke of fresh Kokelndem grass fire ... beautiful!

All in all a nice one to drink, but a bit overestimated from my point of view. For 80 to 100 € are better single malts available ...
    • Nose
Cork and lemon, very fresh with a hint of grass. Spicy wild honey, apple and raisins. In addition there is vanilla in a really authentic way (bourbon vanilla?). At the very background some burnt wood.
    • Taste
Soft and not too intrusive. Vanilla again together with red fruits (flavor of wine as well). Some bitterness of oak, especially at the end. A bit acidic in the body. Slightly the taste of ashes hidden in there. Balanced in a nice way, complex but not too complex.

Herbs and hints of smoke remain. Over time it gets dry.

Quite a nice one, actually my favorite in the HP core range. Lighter in all other qualities than peatiness in comparison to my other middle-smoky favorite, namely Springbank. Something in the direction of apricot-liquorice, the famous heather in both the nose and the taste, cupboard-wood, white chocolate, honey, dry sherriness and wafts of smoke around it. Pleasant, would however certainly benefit from a bit higher strength and a decisively lower price.

  97. Thermidor scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

This is pretty forthcoming, easy despite that bit of peat, and IMHO one of the best easy introductions to peated whisky, but sadly it's now priced completely out of its league as a dram.
    • Nose
HP signature floral peat. The 12yo's aroma that some folks detect as baby sick has developed into something more fun here. Slightly leathery (like bookleather). Little bit of peat and burnt matches. Tree bark. Some yeastiness.
    • Taste
The body is pretty good for a big vat OB. Tar candy (Tervaleijona or Läkerol or something like that, liquorice-salmiak stuff) , sherry, a hint some sweet tropical fruit (apricot or nectar maybe, not mango or pineapple or citrus).
    • Finish
Some dried fruit cake, probably courtesy of the sherry casks.

A nice whisky, but more alcohol could intensify the taste a even more.
    • Nose
Gentle peat, a bit hidden (not as strong as a Laphroaig or Ardbeg for instance). Some nuts, a hint of malt. Therefore slightly sweet. Cold and wet earth. Some roasted apple, despite this not much fruit.
    • Taste
Some smoke and gentle malty sweetness, some wild honey and toffee at the end of the taste. A bit oak, not as bitter as similar whiskies. Cacao and hints of black tea. Some raisins after the third sip.
    • Finish
Average finish, not too long. Some earthy peat remains. Honey and cacao stay longer. Some bitter spices stay as well.

Finish too short, with spices and fruits "again"

A nice one. Very good and perfectly balanced.

Tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2015.
    • Nose
Maritime, salty and lightly peated. Iodine. Some sherry influence too. Maybe a tad too much for my taste but the whole is very nice.
    • Taste
Very good, the sherry does not take the lead. More sugarry than expected, with this coastal and slaty side on the top, the light peat strikes then.
    • Finish
Long, and salty but not that expressive. This where It would have deserved a few extra degrees.

-The first bottle that I'd opened was perfection between smokiness and sweetness. The best whisky I tasted so far (2015).

-The Second bottle is close to the Ambassador's Choice (10 Years Old).

-The Quality varies from bottle to bottle. You have been warned.

    • Nose
Mmm, what a nice depth we've got here, complete, engrossing richness, and complexity is great too. At the first nose HP 18 year-old delivers notes of dried apricots, wood spice, dusty nutmeg, along with mango and guava fruits, and mild, peachy almost, armagnac-like oaky spiciness. Keeps to develop on the second nose, throwing some candied fruits in later, dates, cherry plums, melon, macadamia nuts, timid acacia and peeled lychee fruit, spice. The tertiary nose, now mellower, has brought a hint of varnish (polished redwood?) in the backyard over time.
    • Taste
Again, it tastes so... good indeed... being speechless for a moment, I am seduced already by those flavours, I am well impressed. Initially sweet, yet swift arrival takes then a mixed shape of salty toffees?, liquorice sweets, bits of sapwood, spare wild orange and gingery spice. Carries a dense, chewy (toffeeied-like) palatable structure, it is quite woody also, but unlike old wood - juicier and lighter, with an astringent, multi layered mouth feel. Eau de Cologne/gin?, dry-bitter, a tad salty, kumquat?, lemon peel.
    • Finish
Well-paced, lengthy and silky, fading slowly, really slow. I feel a lot of warmth at first, but then that evens out, cools down little by little, dissolving in a sherbet fizz with touches of spearmint or sage, lemon-lime fruit, backed by ginger and nutmeg.

The Highland Park 18 is very diverse and offers from the sea, over wonderful fruits, sweetness to strong spices and in the taste and finish pleasant smoke a journey over the entire Orkney Islands.
    • Nose
Delicate, aromatic smoke with the typical Highland Park note of heather. A touch of salt and sea is also there. Sweet forest honey and liquid caramel with mirabelles, plums, blackberries, red apples and clear citric acid. Then darker, the sherry gets stronger. The plums and apple now baked, with raisins, toffee and chocolate.
    • Taste
Delicate and yet emphatically, the whisky appears creamy on the tongue. Sweet honey, grilled peach, heather and more noticeable than peat smoke stamped in the nose. Grapes and chocolate. Ritter Sport grape nut!
    • Finish
At the beginning there are still salty caramel, grapes and sweet sherry in the lead. Quickly becoming drier, soon spices, oak and very dark chocolate with espresso go into the lead. At the end, a delicate smoky note remains in the mouth for a long time.

Flows nicely into the space with caramel and quite some nice Sherry casks (but they are 'smaller' compared to the classic old 18 yo).

Very aromatic outlines which reminisce the old - but it is certainly different; a newer style - but you certainly get the HP-character!

At the beginning it is slightly nervous on the nose but getting more integrated and more complex with time. Maybe this will settle down as the bottle is open now.

Surprisingly good and intense on the palate.

    Nice finish.

Miles above the actual ones (this is the version that states 'Distillery Manager' on the front label).

Tasting with Armin Fuchs on Jan.25, 2015.
    • Nose
peat with some alcohol at first nosing - but the alcohol soon develops into rich citrus notes, caramel (flows also into space with some Sherry and hints of old wine cellars), honey (sweet), cold baked apple, quite pleasant Sherry casks, fading hints of UHU, cherry (with peat), old books and book shelf (slightly dusty), HP-sprinkling character (honey and sweet citrus), Spiritus, wood (processed and untreated as well as polished), hints of spice in the throat, orange juice and some orange peel, in the meantime the peat goes more in the background and melting more together within the aroma, nutty milk chocolate, some scouring milk (but not completely pure), wine grape juice, when you gently swing the glass: more volatile and separated impressions of lighter fruits and peat - this is melting together again after some time, wine cellar again, pleasant caramel in combination with some smoke, traces of mocha quite far away, brandy beans, peated melted chocolate, some sweet barley, slight impressions of 'banana-split', apple, hints of chocolate covered raisins, some cookie
    • Taste
citrus, aromatic smoke, fruity, honey, some wood, some spices at the beginning, apple, some Sherry, scouring milk (old) for some seconds, slight tartness from dark chocolate, boiled beef, wooden crate, dark fruits (cherries, plums), pleasant mouth-feel: creamy-thick and full, intense and fiery, leather, mild cigar tobacco, long, some barley, honey-chocolate, some ash
    • Finish
peat with some Sherry, plum, wood, brandy bean (and other liquor pralines), oranges and orange zest, dark chocolate, leather, some lemon, slightly metallic for some seconds - disappearing again (does not bother), pleasant light spiciness, some apricot, honey-peat, getting slightly dry, memories of cognac, dried vanilla bean

A very good whisky indeed. One that is not completely to my liking, but that it more a matter of preference. Objectively (if there is such a thing) this is a well-balanced and well-rounded whisky.
    • Nose
Very smoke. Wood smoke and coal smoke, also some lighter peat. After the initial smoke it shows a fruitier side, with apple cider at the forefront. Next up is hay, straw, limestone. It also has a sweeter element, honey and cotton candy. Very well balanced.
    • Taste
Oak, pepper, peat smoke and licorice. It has an earthy quality, as well as some pine wood. Oranges make for a little more balance, but it is not anywhere near the complexity and richness of the nose.
    • Finish
Smoke, wood, citrus, salty notes and some peat. Medium to long.

Quite drinkable, but you need to be in the mood for really acidic fruits and epic dryness.
Oh, and no peat like in the 12yo
    • Nose
Fruity. Green fruits. With some grapes/raisins in the mix. Very fresh. But not young or rough smelling. The spirit itself doesn't exert itself in the nose.

With water: hint of pineapple. Pear. Watermelon. Damp/wet polyester/nylon jacket. Ripe bananas. Possibly some oranges.
      Old cheese!
    • Taste
More fresh green fruits. Overtones of bitterness/acidity, but not offputting. Ultra-dry.
Very VERY small hint of sherry in the background, but it's so faint that if I didn't know it was matured in sherry cask I would have dismissed it. mellow. Easy (apart from the acidity that's all over the place). Sour Wine gum/rubber. Brown sugar, veeeery faint. Leftover iceberg salad that's gone boring and soft.

With water: a lot more acidity! Sherry's gone. Cough syrup.
    • Finish
Short. Apart from some warmth at the back of the palate. And a huge bunch of dryness. But that's it. Just ... short.

pretty fun combination, and very well integrated. Vanilla and eucalyptus
top a green apple crumble that's heavy on sweet baked bits. The nose is
elegant and enticing. Sweet, salty, floral, fruity, and smoky.
      Deeelish.
    • Taste
Flabbier and lighter than I'd have expected from the nose. Similar base,
honey, wood, lemon and non-sour kumquats. Salted vanilla ice cream
(woohoo!) and maybe chocolate malt. The wood creates this great mushroom
and earthy strand, and then helps to tighten up the flavors at the
      mid-palate.
    • Finish
Lemon and salt. The wood has something of artificial sweetness to me (Hi
and Low - aspartame), which puts me off somewhat. I can see why so many
swear by HP, and I liked it, though I was distracted at points and it
left that awkward sweetness for me (especially after the honey was so
      well done)

For the 'Distillers Manager' version: 87 !

BUT: I am not convinced of the 'Whisky Maker' version …: 84 points!

Because I lack depth and roundness; for me would be 'flat' the appropriate term.

Of course, it is pleasant to drink and provides some quality,

but if you ONCE enjoyed a bottling of eg the '90s,

you know that this malt has NOTHING to do with the legend Highland Park 18.

This is a fantastic whisky. So much craftsmanship and art behind this one. I am flabbergasted.

    (Rating 87-91)
    • Nose
Aromatic oak, cereal, very soft peat. Spicy with vanilla, cinnamon, smoked burnt honey and coffee. Very complex on the nose.
    • Taste
Vanilla, black pepper and orange peel. A second wave of fresh grass, roasted nuts, sesame oil and spicy butter scotch.
    • Finish
It's long and dry and delivers a second a wave of happiness, even a third one with sweetness and nuts hitting the sides of the tongue.

  195. Alex scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Very rich and full taste, on bold sweet honey, dried fruits, subtle sherry, some chocolate, muted peat and wood smoke at the finish makes it a very elegant and satisfying dram. A classic and very recommendable.

Nose: Honey, lightly toasted white bread. Oranges and apple pie. The sea breeze and a hint of smoke going along with it. Grass and floral notes

    Body: Medium weight, almost creamy.

Taste: Spices and salt, honey and oranges. I also get some pear and apple. Smoke is more prominent now.

Finish: Medium length on peppers and salt. Slight smokiness.

Verdict: Good value/price. Its savourable, drinkable and has a profile that I believe rarely disappoints.

A complex but very round dram. The light smoke, the sherry and the HP-typical heather honey harmonize well with the maturity of the 18 years.
    • Nose
Gentle, pleasant campfire smoke and some tobacco. The smoke quickly disappears behind sherry, heather honey and slightly dried grass. Creamy candies, caramel and light nuttiness behind.
    • Taste
Creamy in the mouth. Again the grass, sweet honey and some damp soil. Wood polish, hints of fig and dark berries.
    • Finish
creamy, long and warm with sherry and some oak. On the palate, the dried grass remains.

    • Nose
Sweet Sherry, walnuts, fresh fruits, exotic woods, spices, a little floral. Fragrant Soaps (like Roger and Galet!)
    • Taste
Sweet, melted, dried fruits, chocolate. It's simple but super nice. Too bad there was such a dilution. Bitterness tip.
    • Finish
      Long, sweet, chocolate.

The nose needed time, but the palate and especially the
finish make this a classic that is quite indispensible in any cabinet.
    • Nose
The nose is rather closed, but opens up if you are
patient. Grassy and clean, with apples and walnuts mostly. Soft toffee and
sweetened butter. Only a tiny bit of smoke. Some mint for a fresh touch. Almost
no spices to speak of. Give it fifteen minutes and it will become quite
      beautiful.
    • Taste
Powerful attack and pretty spicy. Liquorice, peat, lot
of smoke now. A salty lining. But pretty fruity as well. Apples, pears and some
blood oranges. A hint of coffee.
    • Finish
It is mostly that peat and coffee that return in the
spicy, medium length finish. Salty at the death.

A very tastefull whisky especially for a dark and chilly evening with a cigar in an easy chair and a good book. This is an "atmospheric"whisky !
    • Nose
A hint of smoke but not unpleasant. Fresh and salty. Some honey and chocolate and a dash of mint, leather and lavender. Complex.
    • Taste
At the beginning a bit salty. After that the sweetness of honey and chocolate. A dash of liquorice and very pleasant bitterness (macaroons ?).
    • Finish
A very delicious finish because of the sweetness that rules clearly. Also a hint of liquorice and at the end a very pleasant bitterness. Smoke returns !

Nose: PX sherry (moderate), flowery, hints of oak, red berries like red currant, cherries, green bellpeppers!, generally a bit subdued

Mouth: super smooth, sherry, red fruits

Finish: Some light peat, pepper, red berries, a bit oak influences, warm and medium long

Comments: Very round and extremely smooth and easy. Pleasant all around but nothing too deep. Usually i find 43% vol. sufficient but here it feels a tad too weak.

The top gun in HP for me, when it comes to the 'core range'. Absolutely great whisky.
    • Nose
Massive honey sweetness in perfect harmony with soft spice. Some oak and subtle smoke coming through. Orange fruit, peaches, pineapple. Caramel and big honey sweetness again. Soft spicy notes of coffee and perhaps cinnamon.
    • Taste
Quite prickly at the tongue, big oak influence and nice malt. Dries out the mouth at the swallow which soon after that starts watering like mad. This is where it gets intensely sweet. Honey, sweet citrus fruits, some chocolate and caramel.
    • Finish
Soft again now, malty sweetness and subtle spice, with a puff of gentle smoke in the background.

Highland Park 18 Year Old is an exceptionally fine whisky that builds on the world-class reputation already enjoyed by the 12 Year Old. All the Orcadian hallmarks of Highland Park are here - the smokiness, the peat, the heather-honey - plus it has gained a glorious richness and spiciness through its longer cask maturation. Its elegance and smoothness make the 18 year old a delight to the malt whisky connoisseur.
