Port Ellen is always on my priority list. I like not only this part of the story, but also the characteristic honey-apple tones. It's like being on a Jewish holiday (רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה) where you are lavishly treated. In our case, this is Sherry butt, and these are new expectations. But I sit in the room of my native Vladikavkaz on the eve of Orthodox Christmas, and spend Christmas Eve for this tasting. And it's lovely.

A little perceptible smoke, through which buckwheat honey, dried fruits, prunes and dried apricots, a vase with red and yellow apples (yellow predominate, which is strange). A dark grapes lies on top. Surprisingly, it is listed on the cask type as Sherry. So many tones bourbon barrel opens at the very beginning. After standing in a glass, the drink gives raisins and spices: cloves and cinnamon. A slight mustiness of rotting autumn leaves. With a drop of water, the drink took on a sharper shape: wormwood and the bitterness it gives. Amazingly, the next layer is powdered sugar and a candy store (such red-and-white candy swirled like umbrella handles, the name of which I can't remember).
    • Taste
      91 91
Sweet taste of all possible dried and dried dark fruits and berries: prunes, grapes, red apples with peel. With a drop of water, fresh fruits are added: yellow apples, Caucasian pears with dark skins.
    • Finish
      92 92
The aftertaste is fiery, sweet. It reminds me of dark chocolate with raisins, then the old, old plum jam comes out. This is what our grandmothers used to forget in the dark corners of their storerooms. With a drop of water, there is a certain oiliness, which happens from an olive. A slight mustiness remains at the very end of the aftertaste.

Harsh industrial-mineral whisky, powerful, dense and rich, but strictly for an amateur, and although I am a fan of this style, I won’t say that it turned out just great, yes, interestingly, in some places it’s very deep and complex, but still this late Port Ellen is far from the best samples that the distillery can boast of, but you can easily see the generic features here if you have already tried at least five of those very best releases, and if this is your first acquaintance, then there may be some misunderstanding of the reasons for the popularity of the brand.
    • Nose
Open, dry, many mineral tones, caustic, caustic, plaster, masonry, carbide, salty lard with garlic, herbal tones, radish, oiled steel tools, stone dust, welding spray, industrial textiles.
    • Taste
Powerful, saturated, again an abundance of mineral shades, sharp, caustic, salty, industrial textiles, plastic, radish, stone dust, sweet floral-honey tones try to somehow balance the overall impression and in development they partially succeed.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, hot pepper, industrial textile, ginger, a lot of minerality, salt, light sweet and sour shades, herbal motifs, metallic sourness.

    Wake Me Up
You do not often see Port Ellen on sherry. This bottling was released some 12 years ago by Dewar Rattray (A.D. Rattray nowadays) by order of the Belgian importer The Nectar. I presume it was the part of a cask as only 168 bottles were available. The angels are not that greedy.
Sweet nose with clear influences of the sea. Think seaweed, salt, peat and the beach after rain. But, it has to be said, underneath are also clear hints of paint, a rusted fence and some tobacco leaves. Some silver polish and Pacari Los Rioc chocolate (from Eduador, recommended!), espresso and strawberry liqueur. Very special and it almost sounds as if this could not possible work, but it does. Interesting nose.
It is creamy, powerful and surprising. Sweet versus salt, white fruit and citrus next to stockfish and sea weeds. The peat is very outspoken. Tastes like it was poured from a can. Salt & pepper in a headlock with toffee. A bitter edge of the wood makes it picture perfect.
All this goodness continues in the wonderful and very long finish. At the death, it’s like there is a slice of apple sprinkled with salt on my tongue.
Boy, oh, boy, this is very good indeed. Complex and intriguing. Wake me up, before you go-go!

A beautiful, complex and satisfying PE.
    • Nose
Metallic, chemical smell of rust and paint, heavy maritime influence with salt, sea weed, breaze, wet stones, peat smoke. Lemon juice.
    • Taste
Powerful, punchy and very fresh. Apple, toffee, lemon juice, smoked fish, spices, peat. Very complex.
    • Finish
Very long, toffee, lemon juice, sweetness of apple juice and peat carry on and on and on. A pinch of salt at the very end.
