Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2001 Wm.de

  1. Hobbit did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A great young PC, in the nose is some water beneficial to keep the alcohol in check. All in all, it makes him milder and tamer. I think the wildness is this malt but good to face
    • Nose
Musty earthy sherry on first nose, very pleasant, almost tamed smoke that harmonizes with the sherry, mushy raisins, moss, mushrooms (but a very pleasant, yummy variation), forest soil, plum jam, strong salt nits, moist algae and seaweed, lemongrass , Shells on the planks of the Fischkuttersm the sweet and under Sherry influence presses forward, some caramel and fruit spread before smoke and salt come back with smoked bacon, barbique sauce, a very open, prominent Malt, for a piece well over 60% and a 10 He can certainly tolerate water, leather, cherry porridge.
A beautiful complex nose like I like, smoke, sherry, maritime, great.
    • Taste
As expected, a strong, by the sherry only slightly tempered onset, the power of alcohol carries the smoke and wonderfully sweet Sherrynoten in the entire mouth, the alcohol is not badly involved, plums, Berrenmarmelade, caramel, some sulfur, salted chocolate from Barrel, nice strong smoke, raisins, limes and acid drops at the tip of the tongue
    • Finish
clearly dominated by smoke and stale wood, creamy-dry, fine sherry notes spread together with massive barrel chocolate, again maritime notes of algae and salt, long concise finish of the end even slight herbal notes. Very beautiful

Can Port Charlotte from the Sherry hogshead from the year of 2001 when they started to make this peated malt from Bruichladdich disappoint you? Seems to be hard...and once again this is a very nice one!
Sweet notes mix with leather and earthy, peaty ones -  this is stuff that I like very very much.
Thanks for the sample to Peter.

  3. alectron scored this whisky 85 points Specialist

    • Nose
First of: dangerous nose prickle. Dry & earthy peat with a burnt edge, in there's a (for me PC) typical old hard-cheese note, bbq, mint drops, some wood & slightly spicy note, leather / animal hair, faint vanilla & some apricot jam  (86)
A bit later: turns more musty, sweeter with some caramel/butterfudge & more interesting with the sweetness more refined. (88)
Later: lemon and a slight (smoky) dishwasher note, also a faint matchstick/sulphur note. (83)
W Water: somewhat fresher & less musty but also less dense/complex, sea breeze-y, clean machine oil, more earthy, clay even, sweetness now more clearly vanillin / lignin with a touch of cinnamon(84)
    • Taste
leathery & earthy, a few sprinkles of butterfudge, alcohol attacks towards the end. (84)
W Water: nice smokyness, leather, but also quite a few nice tea notes, puh-er as well as black, also some of the tannins, turning slightly bitter but very pleasant still. (85)
W Water & later (+30 mins): gets a nice sweet butterfudge edge (87)
    • Finish
smoky, a slight bitter/dry woody edge with some spices, then the alcohol takes over (81)
Later: settles down a bit, the lemony note comes through at the end now as well. (83)
W water: nice smoky- & creamy-ness, but even watered down, the alcohol takes over. (83)
W water & later: creamy-ness & sweetness increase, some mocca notes now next to the butterfudge, spices, and occasionally a few wood chips  (85)
