Whisky Reviews for Linkwood 1991 GM

    Style: Sherry-Fruity, Spicy and Complex

    Nose:

Fresh cranberries and cherry blossom leading the sherry mist, hitting a stiff malty core which is further plated with graphite and chilli spice. Valencia orange squeezing in between, dry honeycomb with a touch of floral note and tails with Belgium chocolate.

    Palate:

Ah, the summer berries and orange citrus open up brightly on the palate. Lemon zest strings, ginger/chilli spice gives the dram a great burst of life. The sherry notes – Cranberries, red liquorice, and co. laced around the fruity malt. Coconut shreds, more blue berries down the track, while subtle floral overtone is released up high and growing stronger overtime. Finish with lime juice and honeyed barley.

    Finish:

Malt, then another bite of chocolate, fruits and sherry slowly fade away.

    Thoughts:

It must have been a while since I bought this bottle because I have no recollection of purchasing it. I was quite surprised to find it left forgotten at the corner on my Speyside shelf. A pleasant surprise! Anyway, back to this dram – Maybe it’s a bit shy, but the expression manages to cover a wide spectrum of flavours, showing multiple dimensions of Linkwood in a pretty balanced way. The complexity is even more evident when it is given more time. All credit to the fruit-malty core, which remains unfazed in front of a rather strong sherry presence. Quite a decent dram.

    • Nose
Typical Linkwood. Begins to flowery and dried fruit, such as raisins or figs. Now followed by oily nut flavors, orange liqueur, slightly metallic, Rancio, Red Bull?. Overall very concentrated. With water: stewed fruits, waxy apples, nut oil and then becomes fresher and Floraler. Later also yeast pastry, a hint of caraway and Rancio.
    • Taste
Wonderfully put together. Sweet sherry notes, dried fruit, fine spices (allspice, pepper), smoke, oily nut tones, floral reflexes, blueberry muffins, and slightly metallic notes. With water: complex, orange, dark berries, nut oil, rancio, sherry, oak and earl gray.
    • Finish
Very long. Beautifully complex, oily, hazy and flowery. Later also nuts, sherry and dark berries.

This is what complexity is all about. There is so much to find and you'll have to spend hours with this glass. Even after it's emptied there are small changes going on.

    (Rating interval 86-89)
    • Nose
Aromatic oak, perfume, some sweet and sour notes which extends toward sour plums. Bitter almonds, wood spice, dark treacle, malt and allspice. Some fruity notes which I could not point my finger to until water was added --> Pears, fresh pears absolutely.
    • Taste
The delivery is full-bodied and powerful. Sour fruits and mixed spices are competing for the first place, with spices as the winner as time goes by on palate. Brown sugar hints adding sweetness with mixed nuts and wood spice backing up the sweet and sour notes. Water brings sweeter notes and some cocoa powder.
    • Finish
The finish is warm and dry with some sour fruit, again thinking unripe pears and sour plums with the bitter plum kernel. The spiciness branches into cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. When water is added cocoa powder extends into the finish with some soft leather and allspice.

I had it confirmed by G&M. This is a re-bottling of a previous issue. The whisky is NOT 21 years old, rather 16 years old.

Thanks to Peter for that dram. Fresh cutted grass, flowers, wood and sweet Sherry notes. Very spicy on the tongue. You feel the cask, oaky, peppery, fresh cutted herbs and black pepper. Really a great bottle. A long finish with beautiful spicy, dry oak, some dried fruits and a bit toffee. Good stuff indeed.

    Tasting Notes by SCOMA:

Nose: Floral and sweet with Sherry notes and ripe fruits. Prominent vanilla and toffee notes also come to the fore.

Palate: Peppery and mouth warming. Subtly nutty with chocolate influences also present.

    Finish: Long and sweet.

The bottle and packing indicate 2012, but the label actually says "bottled 15/05/2007"!?
It also says 1st fill sherry butts no. 5520, 5522.
    Is this rebottled?
