Whisky Reviews for Glenturret 1977 MoS

A dignified old Glenturret with enough complexity and development. Not a total stunner though, I liked a 29 year old 1988 vintage better (WB 112369).
    • Nose
      87 87
Typical old nose: quite dusty at first with old furniture. It is followed by some floral notes, fermented oranges and green apples. It is a bit shy, requires some effort to get the scents.
    • Taste
      90 90
More expressive with a good development: ginger and chilis are followed by citrus fruits, cactus, peach and banana. There's some lacquered wood and a slight minerality too.
    • Finish
      88 88
Waves of sweet peach candy are followed by oriental spices, and a surprising milkiness. It is a bit waxy too, and lingers with light smoke.

This has a meaty angle on the nose but also it is slightly floral.
The palate is syrupy on stewed fruits with a little spice.
    A good old Gleturret.

At first the nose is how I imagine one of those fairy-tale poisonous mushrooms, toxic yet sweet. Chemical fruits eventually give way to apples and honey, with a gristy edge. The palate is full and eclectic, with cream and ham, apple tart with strong liquorice, and black pepper caramel. The aniseed really builds on the finish. An entertaining and rewarding dram.

    • Taste
Exotic fruits, green fruits, papaya, granny smith apple. Vanilla, pineapple, pastry.
    • Finish
      Long, fruity, a little woody.

Hm... Having tried a wide range of the distillery bottlings, this Glenturret bottling feels younger than 34yo and it is indeed, highly drinkable. Feels like chillfiltered and not real concentrated on the palate, hence really easy going, you can have a few glasses in no time. Maybe i expected, a littttttle more... just because it's 34yo...Oh well...
Still a good dream for sure!

Oh yea...this doesn't need water gentlemen... bottled at pretty much the ideal strength, trust me.

    A very nice dram.
    • Nose
Honey, malty, lots of cereals, vanilla, dried fruit, Granny Smith apple, a little bitterness.

With water: no noticeable differences (maybe a bit more cereals)
    • Taste
Creamy attack on the malt, then a lot of fruits (citrus, peach, pear), a little honey, some sweet spices, a bit of bitterness.

With water: enhances the fruity sweetness.
    • Finish
Long, drier (but the fruits are still present) and a little woody.

Finish: Long, with candied lemon and vanilla. Slight dryness with herbs.

In the truest sense of the word a round thing. Anyone looking for rough edges here will probably search in vain. But if you want a smooth and well-matured, sweet malt for the summer time, is definitely in good hands. Not a malt that will be remembered forever, but one that certainly has its qualities.
    • Nose
Wow, that's cute! A thick grape sweets spreads in the nose, subtle notes of almonds and marzipan. After a while, the smell of dry autumn leaves mixes under it. A very mild or soft representative of his guild, who only opens his doors to further odor rooms. Here then something green, but not really saeuerlicher apple and dry sand cake. From time to time, I imagine to notice a bit of smoke, but if so, these are the smallest traces. No cracker, but a rather elegant and fine Glenturret. Nice nose, although a bit "pep" for a praise in the highest notes is missing.
    • Taste
While the barrel or its wood in the nose has remained completely hidden to me, it appears more clearly on the palate. However, for that reason alone one would not be able to conclude that he was halfway old. Rather, the suppleness points to the more than 30 Lenze. He stays sweet and gets over stronger than when he's still nosy. With water, I would be more careful, at least he does not turn out with a whole new face.
    • Finish
Solid in length, very sweet and quite supple on the palate.

This is a very fruity whisky!!  OMG!!  The pineapples just jumped into my nose and into my mouth and danced around some more.  You like pineapple with a dash of alcohol?  Go for it.
