A highland park of old school. The aroma profile differs significantly from current bottlings. Especially in comparison with the (meanwhile sadly hired) 21-year-old, the Bicentenary shows a clearer, more fruity side. The typical light smoke is not found here, but an elegant blend of fragrance and spice. Only the weak alcohol content seems a bit understated to me.
    • Nose
Behaved, almost timid - takes a long time in the glass to "wake up". Then fragrant and floral with buttercups, honey and sweet heather. Fresh orange peel and green banana are added, especially the banana is not typically known at Highland Park. No smoke for me to feel, but more and more fruit. Juicy peaches and plums, only at the very end shows a hint of wood
    • Taste
silky, smooth and not immediately present here. The whisky comes only slowly in motion (probably due to the low alcohol content of only 40% vol.), Then initially cute. Presents vanilla, dark sugar and a clear spicy wood, which over time on the tongue is getting titter - think of sprouted garden herbs. Also, a peculiar, floral note is still there, but I can not name.
    • Finish
nice texture (which surprised me positively), glides oily and felt slowly down the throat. Burnt caramel and a tart coffee note rise. Not too long finish

Michael Jackson with his book "Malt Whisky Companion" is one of the standard books for whisky including whisky reviews. With a very good rating (score 95) from Michael Jackson, the 16-year-old Lagavulin was the whisky reference. Looking for a whisky with a similarly good rating, I came across this Highland Park (score 94).
The whisky is wonderfully reminiscent of heather and herbs. It is balanced and has a little bit of everything.
Later in 2010 when visiting the Highland Park Distillery I was able to buy another bottle. Since this whisky was actually already out of stock, the distillery bought back a batch for the Japanese market. This is why there is also a wooden box with Japanese characters for this bottle.
