An absolutely wonderful whisky! This seems to take all the best tasting notes from some of Islay’s single malts and weave them together in a perfect tapestry of aromas and tastes. Although I know this blended malt doesn’t contain Laphroaig, it has a few tasting notes very similar to it. I can definitely taste the Ardbeg and Caol Ila, although I’m not sure about the Bowmore. Having never tasted Port Ellen, I can’t comment on how this malt affects the overall flavor profile. Big Peat is definitely as good as any standard Islay I’ve tried. Any 10 year old Islay whisky would have stiff competition with this one. The bottle used for this review was labeled "Batch 10".
Salt water, peat smoke, iodine, pepper, and a bit of vanilla cake aroma.
Bursting with phenolic peat smoke notes and ashy, burnt cinders. Dark, rich pipe tobacco with a bit of vanilla sweetness.
Fairly long, with wet peat smoke ashes.
