Black Bull 12 Year Old, 50% BSW.

30ml sample from a couple of years ago, which I got round to drinking in June 2022.

    Mid tone yellow.

Aroma is muted, papery, a touch of rum comes through an apple note. Not much going on. It takes a while for the chocolate liqueur note to show itself.

Taste is easy at 50% alcohol, a bit waxy, building smoke and plasticky notes. Also building European oak. The sherry casks used (the taste indicates there must be at least some) seem like pretty good ones; Spicy, dry but a little chocolatey and rounded, ‘dark’ and damp wood, vaguely mushroomy. The spirit cleanses things out on the finish.

Well this was a really slow burn but in the end the flavour had some stuff I really enjoy. Waxy spirit and good old sherry casks. It’s a very solid whisky - it just needed to be treated with patience. 3.5/84

    • Nose
Very restrained, some cardboard, nuts, nutmeg, other spices, lemon, aniseed, wood, a hint of wild berry jam
    • Taste
Gummy bears, honey, lemon, spices, some cardboard, wood

First follows Granny Smith, raisins, wood, malt and mandarins. The longer the whiskey breathes, you can smell burnt sugar, peach, pineapple juice and then lightly white pepper. Lemon, cloves, nutmeg, orange peel, white grapes, dark chocolate and some perfume. Light, fresh and pear follow at the end.
    • Taste
      84 84
Peach, pineapple juice, pear, red apples and Granny Smith, white grapes, dark chocolate, a good dose of white pepper, mandarins and burnt sugar. Fresh and perfume follow each other.
    • Finish
      83 83
White grape, pear, red apples and Granny Smith, tart, burnt sugar and white pepper at the end. The finish remains tart and on the palate for about a few minutes.

A very good and complex blend. Most definitely worth the price
    • Nose
Raisins, caramel, vanilla, oak, chocolate, a note of apple, citrus and apricot
    • Taste
Raisins, vanilla, honey, chocolate, citrus, apple, caramel
    • Finish
Starts with bitter oak, but transforms fast into a sweet and soft dram with raisins and chocolate. A bit of white pepper remains.

Spicy, vanilla, slightly grassy, woody and malty nose
mouth on caramel, vanilla, malt, grain, slightly cooked yellow fruits (apple, peach and a little tangerine), some dry wood in return, simple but effective. cocoa feeling at the end.
Quite simple finish, monolithic on the same scents, malt, vanilla, spices forward for a creamy side.
A slightly disappointing blend compared to its little brother.

  9. coldsun scored this whisky 76 points Expert Senior

Good whisky, with very malty and fruity (apple, plum, apricot) flavor, with notes of flowers. Taste and finish continue flavor notes well and fully.

a bit pricey, but is not stingy on quality, well balanced flavors and not overly sweet, the 50% abv does wonders also

I tasted the sample imported from the Whiskey Festival 2017. Maybe a little simple but strong and distinctive whiskey.
    • Nose
The blend is quite full and distinctive. Wood, milk caramels, orange, resins, conifers, a little old wood to dullness, varnish. (84 b)
    • Taste
Creamy impression. Dark chocolate, spiced woody, caramel. The bitter bitter flavor, which made the impression a little wrong. (82 b)

  16. Spirit of Delphi scored this whisky 77 points Member Senior

All in all, unsatisfactory, not my thing.
    • Nose
Acid, slightly stinging without water, with a few drops of gentle, possibly apple
    • Taste
Acidity and sweetness, even diluted remains an alcoholic note, apart from reasonably balanced but not very complex
    • Finish
sour, cider, white pepper, medium to long

  17. rottendon scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Well, well, a blend. Quite edgy compared to some others, so quite interesting, but I rarely wish for three four percent less alcohol, usually it's the other way around.
    • Nose
Herbs, sour cucumbers and a little alcohol at the beginning. After some time the cucumbers have disappeared, some acetone is available. Only after another clear standing time, the sour and aggressive notes move into the background. A few sherry notes, a good dose of caramel and now a few fresh fruit notes. The nose is still developing quite pleasant. The alcohol first comes to the fore again warmth, before fleshy notes framing distinct peach and apricots.
    • Taste
An alcoholic sharpness can not be concealed, but the aromas underneath are thoroughly pleasing, balanced and harmonious. Vanilla sweetness, honey, dark chocolate, nuts and a few herbs. From oak still no trace. Correction, the second sip comes back a few tannins to light.
    • Finish
Everything bitter has disappeared very quickly, a sweet, somewhat laby nuttiness remains medium, as a reminder pretty long stand.

This whisky really benefits from a good splash of water. The change with water is remarkable in nose and taste. Less definition as A'Bunadh, but compared to the costs: good choice.
    • Nose
w/o water - Heavy. Sweet of dark fresh fruit. Vanilla. Dark chocolate. Light touch of salt. Savoury herbal undertone.
w/ water - Vailla. Milk chocolate. Apricot. Orange. Green fresh herbs (sage?)
    • Taste
w/o water - warm and sweet arrival. Hot development of citrus fruits.
w/ water - sharp sweet arrival. delicate development to citrus sweetness.
    • Finish
w/o water - bitter citrus finish
w/ water - long, warm citrus bitter and sweet

  20. Robert Parker scored this whisky 83 points Expert Junior

Definitely underestimated and a proof that blends are not necessarily bad. Have done with the whiskey a bottle division and received similar feedback.
    • Nose
sweet, caramel, a little sherry, chocolate - cocoa
    • Taste
Caramel, strong on, sherry pushes, spices, bitter orange, citrus, again spices, vanilla
    • Finish
Bitter orange and sherry spices cover the throat, alcohol nicely integrated, quite long

  21. MaltyMillionaire scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

    Very nice, if somewhat unidimensional.
    • Nose
Soft red fruit, raisins, toffee, and orange creamsicle. No alcohol burn despite the high ABV.
    • Taste
Viscous and smooth, with a sweet arrival that mirrors the nose. Toffee and red fruits, vanilla, and orange sherry.
    • Finish
Smooth and prolonged. Toffee fades into orange bitters and spice (cinnamon).

  22. molar3rd scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

Nose: Sweet sherry, lemony notes and vanilla, some pears too. Quite nice actually, and full with that vanilla. the high %ABV is well integrated.

Palate: Very nice as well : Creamy, Chocolate, toffee, wood, and quite a bit of vanilla.

Finish : Cocoa , some dark chocolate, and wood.

    Bottom line:

This is a nice sipping whisky. It’s not overly complex, but delivers a good combination of the malt and grain. Plenty of vanilla, and chocolate with a new finish.

I’d recommend this blend for beginners, taking their first steps in the whisky world,as a good introduction to whisky before diving into the single malt world.

Price wise, this is not a very cheap, and even more expensive than some entry level single malts. If you are not intimidated by a “Blend” , it’s worth a try.

    Good work by Duncan Taylor.

    • Nose

With water - vanilla. Chocolate. Apricot, oranges. Green herbs (sage?)
    • Taste
No water - warm, sweet arrival. Hot development of citrus.
With water - sharp, sweet arrival. Hesitant development toward citrus sweetness.
    • Finish
Long, warm finish of citrus, sweet and bitter.

Black Bull 12 years, 50% alc.
    Region: Scotland

Special feature: Blended Scotch (50% Malt - 50% Grain)

Nose: Unexpected sherry influence. Powerful is the whiskey, with red fruits, malt, caramel and chocolate. In addition fleshy flavors ... with bacon and wood smoke. Complex with a fruity line.

Palate: Cereals with fruits and nuts, cereals. With milk chocolate and toffee, the fruits appear brighter than in the nose. Pears and crumbly apples.

Finish: Long and strong, becomes creamy and fruity.

Conclusion: This should not be a single malt? Great whiskey, great price!
