30ml sample from a couple of years ago, which I got round to drinking in June 2022.
Mid tone yellow.
Aroma is muted, papery, a touch of rum comes through an apple note. Not much going on. It takes a while for the chocolate liqueur note to show itself.
Taste is easy at 50% alcohol, a bit waxy, building smoke and plasticky notes. Also building European oak. The sherry casks used (the taste indicates there must be at least some) seem like pretty good ones; Spicy, dry but a little chocolatey and rounded, ‘dark’ and damp wood, vaguely mushroomy. The spirit cleanses things out on the finish.
Well this was a really slow burn but in the end the flavour had some stuff I really enjoy. Waxy spirit and good old sherry casks. It’s a very solid whisky - it just needed to be treated with patience. 3.5/84
