Whisky Reviews for Caperdonich 1972 DT

Some nigh-40 year-old 1972 Caperdonichs got simply too oaky, slowly losing their magic, their beautiful and beloved bouquets of fruits, flowers and honey to an overexposure of wood. But in some bottlings a balance was struck, leading to a kind of synergy, if you will, where the oak became an actual asset, complimenting the beloved elements that were all still there in full force, adding on another layer of flavor, which makes for richer and more complex whisky. This is one of those, albeit just.
    • Nose
Potent. Powerful. Loads of fruits - mostly citrus-y ones like tangerines and oranges, but also pineapples and mango - and then floral notes and pollen, nice honey and waxiness, old leather, enriched with spicy oaky notes (pepper, cinnamon, ginger). Maybe even a few hints of farminess if you nose it for long enough. Quintessential aged caperdonich 1972, and my favorite kind of nose.
    • Taste
Sharp and biting at first, moreso than younger bottlings. Mellows out given time, becoming 'greener' and fresher and generally more palatable and juicy. Loads of spices unfolding into an even richer variety of (tropical) fruits, with peaches and plums added into the mix. Still some waxiness and sweet honey, but it's more subtle than the nose would suggest.
    • Finish
Definitely more smooth and honeyed here, with a dash of mint added to the lingering spiciness. A small bitter note in there, but certainly nothing out of control.
