Delicious dark fruit scents where the alcohol is not noticeable at all. Dark plums, dark chocolate and dark fudge.
    • Taste
      90 90
Delicious, exactly my taste profile. The alcohol is beautifully integrated, the taste is firm but at the same time soft / delicate. Full, but not overpowering, sweet sherry notes. Wow, this can be served to me daily. A beautifully balanced dram.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is unfortunately medium long. This one should have lasted forever for me, what a treat !!

Glen Elgin is one of those distilleries I haven’t really payed attention to yet. Until now.. since I bought a line up of 6 different Elgin’s in age, casktype and pricerange. This is the third one. The first 2 where convincing stuff so I’m having some expectations here ( again :-) )
    • Nose
Oh that’s nice. This must have been an old style, high quality sherry cask! At first it is musty, somewhat shy and thick on sherry. After a few minutes a little more bittersweet freshness comes out. Out of the first three I guess this is the thickest on sherry so far. The nose is quite subtle in terms of Elgin influence and quite thick on sherry influences. Alcohol is still a bit too present, which is a little distracting. To me it gives dried red fruits like plumbs and cherries. Also apricot. Furthermore I get rum raisins, leather, antique wood. The whole gives me a sensation like walking in the woods after rainfall. Hand warmth boosts the nose by a couple of points. It gets more full, warm and open and the alcoholic sting completely dissolves.
    • Taste
My god this is delicate, soft, sweet, full bodied and well balanced! Thick and syrupy, wel rounded and a wee dryness of tannines. This is a treat for the palate. The mouthfeel reminds me of whipped cream. Thick red fruits with still some freshness like in green apples. Besides that I get ripe plumbs, raisins, almond and oaky spices. Beautiful!
    • Finish
The long finish is as delicate, soft and balanced as the taste. This has got quite a wow factor! Warm apple pie, red berries, milk chocolate, mocca, leather and antique furniture. Also I get the sensation of being in a cigar humidor. There is also a slight and pleasant tingling feeling present at the end. It’s quite impressive how lively and active the finish is.

Class A stuff, but fair enough it is less recognizable as an Glen Elgin. I would have appreciated it a bit more if the Elgin spirit would have been more on the foreground.

The second Glen Elgin dram in a line up of 6; for me yet an unexplored distillery. But that is about to change.
    • Nose
      88 88
Dirty sherry nose; but not a sherry bomb. Plums, chocolate and raisins. Reminds me somehow of Glendronach single cask expressions.
    • Taste
      88 88
Mild spices in combination with sweet meaty sherry flavors. Thick and oily. Pretty strong in the mouth. Some drops of water are required.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long to long. Spices are more dominant in the finish.

Nice sherried whisky, with the nose being the best part, but overall it's an enjoyable dram without a doubt.
    • Nose
      88 88
Clearly some sherry notes, leather, prunes, furniture wax, alcohol pretty dominant. Some honey and pepper.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty smooth, still some pepper on the tongue, licorice, prunes, a sour note underneath. Strong and a full taste, a bit of chocolate too.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still heavy, tobacco, prunes, still some sour underneath, pretty long. Some chocolate as well.

Leather, dark sherry notes, furniture polish, apricots, prunes, redcurrant sweets, grilled peach halves in caramelized sugar, buttercups, dry woody notes, white pepper, a hint of honey, allspice and sweet fennel seeds. Taste: peaches, apricots, apples, liquorice, cider, cassis, blossom honey and candied ginger, accompanied by notes of wood. Finish: Again a mix of apples, peaches and apricots mixed with honey, pepper and wood. A little dry finish. Rather short to medium with sherry, leather, wood and currants. n90, t88, f89

A lot of sherry influence. Got some blueberry, plums, figs and even some tabacco. Some fresh leather in there as well.
    • Taste
      90 90
A really fichly sherry profile with lots of raisins, plums and sweet sherry. Some tabacco comes trough as well and surprising enough even some green apples.
    • Finish
      89 89
The finish is long and full of red fruits, even some haselnut and almond nuts.

I like the medium sherry influences although the colour might suggest that it is a heavy sherry bomb. It is very well-balanced, sweet and nicely sherried. It reminds me of the 16 year old Managers dram, but a little bit lighter on the nose and taste.
    • Nose
Plums, chocolate, rum raisins, toffee and some tobacco. Pretty straight forward actually. Maybe some coffee beans, a bit flowery. Not overly sherried which is a good bonus. Some spices later on, somewhat dry and lot’s of cacao.
    • Taste
Plums, balsamico vinegar (the good ones!), toffee and dark chocolate. A touch of honey, some wood. Milk chocolate which may sound weird as I also get dark chocolate. But there is something creamy going on. The nose suggests a dryness but the palate is not close to being dry.
    • Finish
The finish is mid-long. Again with plums and dark milk chocolate for the creamy aspects. Also a bit peppery after a while.

  19. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A good mole, a sherry barrel dominates, but through it the base often breaks through, widening the range and adding depths. A nice fresh finish, not too sweet overall, thick enough and powerful for 50%.
    • Nose
Open, wet, wet boards, furniture varnish, stain, raisins, herbarium, moist earth, ink, leavard, light floral notes.
    • Taste
Saturated, spicy, oak, varnish, flower-honey tones, dried fruits, prunes, iumum, burnt rusks, porter, malt caramel motifs, cola.
    • Finish
Spicy, refreshing, sweet and sour with a light beer bitterness, rusks, prunes, oak and varnish notes, dried mushrooms.

With water the nose is the same but the palate is even smoother.

This is really good and well worth the price, 90 pointer for me and I am not a sherry head.
    • Nose
Balsamic vinegar, treacle toffee, dark over ripe plums and Jamaica rum chocolate (the bar with the currants in from the 1970`s/80`s.
    • Taste
Thick, mouth coating and syrupy. Reminds me of the Glendronach 15 year revival but better,

There are juicy black currants and blackberry mixed in with pecan pie.
    • Finish
Very long , rich and creamy.
