We do not want to become a malt snob, do we? Never lose appreciation of a simple but honest classic! Known as 'the honey malt', Dalwhinnie 15 is a great choice for beginners to set out on their whisky journey. Notes of heather, green pears and barley sugar complement the honeyed aroma. After a sweet, rich and full-bodied arrival, spices build up quickly with a mildly dry and bitter edge, but well-measured. The aftertaste is gentle, citric and wood-driven with hints of cinnamon and apple juice. A characterful Highlander which should not be overlooked!

Tasty, harmonious, a beautiful honey malt. Unjustly completely underestimated standard - recommended.
    • Nose
sweet and beguiling, lots of honey, orange blossom, apples, pears, toffee, delicate smoke and summer herb garden, meadow flowers, daisies and white clover, a touch of jasmine, a splash of lemon, vanilla, white chocolate, cinnamon, fresh wood, hay
    • Taste
silky-watery, delicately sweet, a lot of honey, toffee, thick caramel sauce, roasted hazelnuts, walnuts, tobiano honey and almonds, orange blossom water, apples, lemon, whole milk chocolate, freshly toasted bread, ginger, light cinnamon, one drop of orange oil; minimal alcoholic, a touch too watery, malty
    • Finish
short, honey, toffee, orange blossom and Toblerone ... and a ticking smoke

Pear, citrus, herbs, a summer meadow wafts into your nose

Grassy and woody but also watery and mild. Grain and beer brandy spreads

You can tell that the barrels have been sucked out, nothing remains in your memory

So I like it very much, my guess:
Alk ~ max. 46%, about 2/3 bourbon barrel, 1/3 sherry barrel, age around 17 years?
    • Nose
      85 85
Earthy, spicy, salty apricot, somehow springbankesk
    • Taste
      87 87
Soft mouthfeel, totally balanced with honey and nutty aromas as well as a hint of lilacberries (i.e. elderberry). Sweet and strong, very interesting!
    • Finish
      86 86
Creamy cream with lightly roasted almond slivers, long and noble.

N: We’ve lot’s on the nose. Light-fresh, light green fruits with a complex mix of subtle yet tight oily/garage/farmy tones. I also pick out a light yeasty meatiness, various fusty honey and sweaty men’s clothes.
T: Thin, and at first oily [and sulphury?], before becoming nutty then stretching out with manuka honey.
F: A light humming on barley sugar.

C: I’ve reviewed and enjoyed this classic malt again [and again] since this tasting [WLP84]. It’s finally time to admit I like Dalwhinnie 15yo.

Although I consider this malt to be relatively thin and watery at first, it gains in volume and balance over time. The interplay between sweetness, fruit and harsh wood tones in combination with smoke and citrus fruits I find very successful, even after many years I can understand again why this Dalwhinnie has paved the way to the whisky connoisseur. A great standard and a tasty malt in between ...

    • Nose
Bright and clear amber glitters in the glass, on the glass wall sticks a syrupy streak from which to solve a variety of long and oily "legs". Creamy roasted flavors and hazelnuts rise, caramel and honey merge together, apples and mandarins are in the air. Minimal hints of smoke dissolve from the sweet and creamy blend of fruit and honey, in addition to the mandarins and oranges are now increasingly pears and creamy toffee. The alcohol is mild and gently integrated, the nose is getting creamier and sweeter ...
    • Taste
Relatively gentle and mild, the first sip flows over the tongue. Spicy woody tones are immediately mixed with creamy caramel and toffee, forest honey and hints of milk chocolate sparkle briefly before an increasingly bitter aroma sets in the palate. Old whale and hazelnuts stick to the palate, subtle sharpness envelops the tongue while slightly charred logs dissolve smoke and tart wood elements. Still stick the oily streaks and thick "legs" on the glass wall, I get an appetite for the second sip. Slightly watery and thin, the Dalwhinnie drips off the tongue after the second sip, while salty and peppery wood marks burn on the tip of the tongue. Once again, burned wood and toasted cereals, meadow herbs and citrus fruits dissolve from the bitter woody note, tart grapefruit massively stimulates my salivation.
    • Finish
Peppery and wooden sharpness still sticks between tongue and palate, lightly smoky, roasted hazelnuts and pieces of wood come to mind again. Abrasion of orange peel and grapefruit exude her tart aroma, honey and a subtle hint of smoke create a nice interplay between sweetness and bitter wood aromas. The creamy and slightly smoky nut flavors stay relatively long on the palate, again discreetly tart and spicy wood tones appear in the finish.

One of my favorite basics especially in the summer, good and cheap, benefits from some air after opening so I decant it always right after opening
    • Nose
Honey, Apples, Lemon peel, Oak tannins, Tree sap, Acetic acid, Vanilla, Wood dust, Floral herbs
    • Taste
mild, slightly sweet, with beautiful oak acidity and fine spicy oak notes, slightly tingling, delicate bitterness, hint of chocolate, caramel, lemon zest
    • Finish
medium long, warming, tingling, spicy but not spicy

Dalwhinnie 15 yo (43%). 20cl bottle consumed Dec 2018. Aroma is peach mango pear apricot - one of the fruitiest I've encountered. Taste is really smooth spiced peat, subtle fruit esters, light wood-perfume without getting too vanilla. All very subtle and refined but full flavoured with some complexity. A masterclass in subtlety and refinement. Great whisky at a great price. Suits me. (3.7/88)
