Perfection is an illusion - but this Japanese masterpiece of a sherry bomb certainly comes very close to it (bottle no. 11218). The nose of Yamazaki 25 is overwhelmingly complex and heavy with overripe strawberries, red roses, raisins, dried figs and a touch of old leather. After a sweet arrival, the taste gets peppery and mildly dry with Christmas spices, cloves and ginger. This whisky was matured in first-class sherry casks, leading to a long and aromatic finish with some delicate hints of coffee and cocoa. A stellar Single Malt with quality from start to finish.

Massive fruit and light to dark sherry notes in the nose.
In the mouth: buttery soft, intense fruit pot, always with a tendency toward rum grape nut, not intrusive.
On the slope remains a wonderful mix of dark chocolate and red fruits. A pleasure from start to finish.

When panning, hardly any legs, and those who come are fat and run back felt in slow motion.

    Nose:
Heavy sherryase at the beginning with slight sulfur notes. However, these forgave quickly, it is easier with some time in the glass. Leather, tobacco, blood orange, frankincense and myrrh, dark red grapes vs. red / dark currants (my wife said it was grapes, I rather currants, sandalwood, mint and some menthol, lemongrass, a dash of apple cider, cardamom.

    Mouth:
Tart, very bitter, cold mocha, leather (old). Fruits are to be guessed. And they too are fermented.

    Long, very bitter finish.

I found the 18er borderline in the taste. This one has absolutely failed in my mouth for me. Again a really great nose! But the rest ...
Again, I can only imagine that the whisky was possibly tilted. In the bottle was only 4-5 drams, who knows how long the bottle was with this level.
Tasted in the Yamazaki distillery, bottle No. 32490

A fantastic nose. After that, the whisky falls off a bit, but still remains in the very good range. 89 points.
    • Nose
Beguilingly sweet. Chocolate raisins. Boiled herbs. Sticky honey. The whisky is old. Old, crusty and overripe. Old fallen fruit.
    • Taste
Drier than expected. Leathery and slightly moldy. Now it's dried herbs. Almost dusty with a slightly sour taste. I'm a bit sensitive here, but it's still limited.
    • Finish
Chewable leather stays in your mouth. Unfortunately not really very long.

Light copper. Very thin slow legs.
A lot of old spice. Dried prunes. Some roasted nuts. Very dry and Very rich. After a while getting heaps of old tobacco and roasted coffee beans. More furniture polish.
You can smell the age on this one if you give it time in the glass.
Very thick. Nice thick and oily mouthful.
Dry oloroso. Quite sweet like Demerara rum. Some nice spice in back palate. Very balanced. Black pepper. Very spicy this one.
The aftertaste is the best thing of this whisky. Rich fruits and choc fudge brownie. Bit of roasted cashews.

Yama 12 sherry cask at the distillery was better in my opinion.

    ¥2900 / 15ml @ Yamazaki Distillery.

Deep red. Very pretty and rich looking. Huge sherry nose, raisins, ripe cherries, oak, apples, oxidation. Very distinctive and quite different to the 18 yo. (this is only sherry casks). Rich and smooth and oaky. Lovely stuff, glad to try it because I won't ever try to buy a bottle.

The Abang glues a wonderful mix of dark chocolate and red fruits. A pleasure from start to finish.
