As a fan of Benromach, this is probably my least favourite expression so far (and not nearly as good as some of the other peat smoke releases I've tried). The balance isn't quite right and it's all just a bit rough around the edges. That being said, this is by no means a bad or unpleasant whisky.

white grapes, some peat and earthy notes. quite simple actually
    • Taste

Dry, smokey and peaty, vegetal/earthy . no real further development
    • Finish

a bit thin, medium long. The taste just sort of dies out on the tongue.

    TASTING NOTE by G&M;

    COLOUR: Pale gold.

    UNDILUTED:

NOSE: Initial hints of tropical fruits, with

charred oak aromas emerging and a delicate

    smoky edge lingers.

    PALATE: Initially warming and mouth

watering, with a touch of cracked pepper, a

subtle malty edge develops with a defined burst

    of peat smoke lingering.

    WITH WATER:

NOSE: Fresh and malty, with delicate charred

oak and bonfire ember notes developing. Fruity

with a delicate hint of vanilla.

PALATE: Hints of bonfire embers, with a burst

of spices. Fruity and sweet, with a fresh herbal

    edge.

    BODY: Light to medium.

    FINISH: Long and fresh.

    CASK TYPE(S): Refill American hogsheads.

Nice, greedy, but a little too sweet.
    • Nose
Cereal must. We are in a brewery? Then gradually develops a nose of grape marc, associated with cooked plums, and some iodized touches.
    • Taste
Sweet, maybe a little too much. It is a kind of dessert "ice grapes macerated with rum", with some glasses of plum brandy very fruity and sweet.
    • Finish
Same, with a little earth, leftover of an invisible "peat smoke".

A more extreme peated version of Benromach, that goes much further than the 10-12ppm levels in the standard 10yo. I found that the peat dominated all other aspects of the malt on both the nose and palate. Underneath the smoke were some nice floral and fruity elements, but the profile was rather youthful. Nice for a change, but not as drinkable as the standard 10yo nor as complex as the smoky malts from islay.
